Please help! I can't stop modding my DSM. I just took about 15 minutes to come up with a list of things I need and then a list of things I want. The needs turned out to be $580 and the wants turned out to be over 2 grand.

When is it enough?

Do you all feel the same way?

How do you do your mods? Save, buy then install when you get a stack of stuff?

It just seems that I am never going to get to the end of this.

A//// Guy 03-23-2004 04:41 PM

Its like that for me too. It will never stop I think. I just buy as things come and look good. Preferably used and cheap but good.

Jana 03-23-2004 05:10 PM

Yeah, it's addictive.

jimwross 03-23-2004 06:56 PM

It happens to me all the time, I've started to ask my self what the point is.... but then I get back to thinking that i dont want to be a ricer anymore! haha

carltalon 03-23-2004 07:26 PM

thats nothing my list was over 5000$ and I have over 2000$ in parts sitting at QPR right now. It's worse then a drug addiction.

Mr Raced 03-23-2004 09:21 PM

Yeah i know exactly what that is like. Its like you cant stop, some how even when you are tight for cash it really dosent matter, you make it happen. And then two weeks later your well on your way to doing more stuff.

CVD 03-23-2004 09:46 PM

Clutch, flywheel, tranny, pistons, rods, and a built head. Thats "all" I need right now. Funny thing is, all that shit will cost more than my car is worth, but I will still buy it.

Jacek 03-23-2004 09:48 PM

expensive hobby isnt it. ;)

JET 03-23-2004 10:52 PM

In the beginning I just wanted a 13 sec car, then 12's, then 11's, now 10's. Nope, it never stops! I keep thinking that eventually it will stop, but then I come up with more ideas! I will be getting my own shop shortly, so then the really crazy stuff I have dreamed up is going to become a reality!

Blk96Eclipse 03-23-2004 11:12 PM

it's very addictive, even when you don't have money you find ways to get money to mod your car

unreal808 03-24-2004 12:00 AM

You will stop when you don't mind losing a race or you think 40 MPG is the only way to go.

At-Least-It's-An-Evo 03-24-2004 12:12 AM

Yea, first intention when buying a dsm was 12.999999... well that was reached this past season. Then it was just to be a tad bit quicker this next season... and spend like $3-4k... yea right. The wants have made it onto the list and keeps extending. :( Wow am I gonna be poor for the rest of the time being that I own this dsm.

v8klla 03-24-2004 12:45 AM

I think I estimated $4000 for my current project, yet somehow I am up over $6000 with another $2500 going on my credit card this week...Still can't figure out how that happened! It better damn well be worth it!

Chris

Matt D. 03-24-2004 02:16 AM

You want to know when enough is enough? When you've owned a DSM for almost a year, never driven it and still keep buying parts for it.

Built engine, the works... With a small 16g. Oh yeah.

MustGoFaster 03-24-2004 02:32 AM

You will never stop. After you have all your mods, it will start feeling slow again and you will need more mods. I have a large issue already, I am immune to 400whp and my car won't be near it this year. And by next year there is a chance I will be immune to 500whp. (when I say immune I mean it doesn’t feel fast) Any idea if there is a power/speed level that you can’t get used to and will always feel fast?

You thought it would only cost $4000 to run 10's including building a motor? If so, that was your problem.

I fear that I will get tired of my car quickly when I get it back together. I have had thoughts already about parting it out and I haven't even driven it yet. Still need a tranny that doesn't scream while going into second.

SlowWhite 03-24-2004 11:10 AM

I've descided to skip all the inbetween steps and just go straight Big.

I originally bought my car for Car audio competitions. I wanted something quicker then my Sebring. That I could Modify the looks to so that it appealed to the Judges more then my stock sebring.

Well That quickly changed. And I wish I'd just went Huge from the get go would have saved me money in the long run.

But then again when I got into DSM's what I put on my car was supposed to be Huge / More then I should have put on for my FWD.

everyone kept saying you realize how bad your traction is going to be, yada, yada, yada.

I was going to do a 50trim. then I'm like we'll I know I'll be building a motor soon. So then it was the 56trim's... then I thought but that's what everyones doing.

So I went bigger just because I know once everyone get's tired of there 56's they'll upgrade to something larger so I just went straight to the larger turbo to save having to buy another one in the future.

I just hope I didn't go to big. But I guess once the motor get's built I can always Spray.

-Brian

v8klla 03-24-2004 11:11 AM

Yeah I don't know what I was thinking, and 10's are still a long way off I think...Maybe not, but bench racing isn't my forte ;)

Chris

v8klla 03-24-2004 11:15 AM

Brian: What the hell turbo are you running that is bigger than a 56 trim compressor wheel??? That thing must be a damn thumper or something like that 3kGT in another post! Are you running it on a 2.0? A GT35R uses a 56 trim and is good for 9's!!!

Chris

Sorry for the off topic, I guess?

blown_turbo_tsi 03-24-2004 11:22 AM

get a geo metro hatch back and fill it with bricks...... then drive that around everywhere..... it will help with the immunity! :bounce:

At-Least-It's-An-Evo 03-24-2004 11:25 AM

The GT40 56 trim compressor wheel is what everyone and their mom has now in the milloin varaitions it is combined with, but we'll just have to see who makes power or goes fast with their setups. If everyone does, good for them, but that is highly doubtful due to reasons I will not list.

SlowWhite 03-24-2004 11:27 AM

it's still the 56 trim wheel. But Larger then the standard 56trims.

I'll admit when it comes to knowing wheel spect, and what not I have no clue. I'd been debating on getting the pte 56trim and even the FP3065 for along time.

Then I heard about the FP3565 in some random thread and was like WTF is this.

I still have no clue what the exact spects are and really I don't even care.

When I think turbo's I think:
-lb's/Min
-Spool RPMS
-EST Pump HP
-EST Race HP
-and how can I fit that on my car.

that's basically it as far as I'm concerned. So after talking with Shane and Moe about what I wanted

Shane made up a list of the turbo's that fit into that category for me. And then I just picked the one I liked the most out of that list. It came down to price vs potential.

Don't picture something gigantic - it's only a little larger then what most of you are running. And I'm sure some of you might already be considering this turbo.

But anyways It's a PTE turbo simular to the FP3565. but non "BB" (limited budget)

I'm hoping It'll spool somewhere around 5200rpms and since my block isn't built yet. I'm limited to the stock power handling. But my goal is at somepoint in the future to build a 2.4

But even with the set up I have there is always bigger / better possibilities. But for me I have a limited budget to work with. So I mod my car when I can and how I can.

There are definetley limitations/upgrades to most of my set up. But at least I'm now comfortable in saying that my car is descently set up. I tried not to skimp to much with this years changes. But like I said limited budget is the only reason I didn't just go crazy with my set up.
Cause honestly I love this hobby, I love almost everything about it. If I had more money oh the things I'd do. :3gears:

Well it'll make power. But as you all know, me going fast........ Ya that's a joke.......I've realized that'll never happen.

Shane@DBPerformance 03-24-2004 11:54 AM

Not as big as James 56-trim though...

SlowWhite 03-24-2004 11:57 AM

Like I said it's nothing to huge and figured some of you probably were already looking at it as a possibility.

For me I mod my car for myself. And I wanted something different then the standard PTE Mitsu 56trim.

CopperGSX 03-24-2004 02:19 PM

Damn, now I don't feel so bad as I see allot of people saying their cars are down and 6 grand invested. Yikes!
My car is a daily driver and there are no tracks in the Williston area so not in it for the times. But moving to Tampa next fall so maybe things will change. I got the old 7 bolt with 120,xxx miles and so waiting to get to Florida to do the 6 bolt swap. Until then no thoughts on turbo or engine upgrades. Would like a FMIC but that can wait.
I am finding all my money is going for upkeep and repair:
ICS (If anyone has one lying around let me know)
Rear wheel bearings going out
Shifting issues so maybe a tranny rebuild soon,
Rotors
SS Brake lines
Pads

The list goes on. Good luck to everyone. Thanks for the replies.

PS Where is everyone getting all the money to pay for this. If there is a money tree in MN please let me know!!!

SlowWhite 03-24-2004 02:25 PM

Dude don't even get me started on Repairs, 6K is like pocket change compared to the total I've spent in the 4-5 years i've been into DSM's.

times that by about 13 and you'll be where I'm at.

blown_turbo_tsi 03-24-2004 02:35 PM

yeah let me in on the money deal too!! i want some more money for my car too! :bounce:

SlowWhite 03-24-2004 02:41 PM

Ok her's how you do it.

Sell everything you own to pay for Repairs. Then don't leave the house for 3 years to do anything. Eat only PB&J for 2 years, drink only water. And Nothing else so that when you do have money you can put it towards upgrades.

Basically live your life like a Broke ass MOFO. and be just like me. :dsmrule:

"I live my life 10 repairs at a time"

CopperGSX 03-25-2004 10:05 AM

ROTFL!

I heard of the "instant ramen" budget. That's where you buy a case of it and eat only instant ramen until you have the money for the car.

I'll just keep searching for that money tree instead.

blown_turbo_tsi 03-25-2004 11:35 AM

yeah those are like 13 cents a package..... lots of money saved for repairs!!! :bounce:

SlowWhite 03-26-2004 10:10 AM

Don't forget the side benifit by eating this way. Your probably loosing weight as well eating these types of food. So there you go. got some weight savings as an extra bonus.
