1998 Pontiac Firebird

Whats some good and bad about these babys? Cause we could be looking at this as a replacement to the GSX.

This is just our newest car of intrest, but I know nothing about these things.

Enes 03-22-2004 12:28 AM

no not the 3.8 suxorz

CVD 03-22-2004 12:43 AM

What he said :stick:

AJ 03-22-2004 01:05 AM

So what do we look at in a motor. It does need to be an AT though.

Enes 03-22-2004 01:06 AM

now you get that, strip it completely.. get a 2.4 in there and throw a huget turbo and some NOS on the baby and you be set :)

CVD 03-22-2004 01:19 AM

Look at getting 2 more cylinders if you want one of those ;)

Enes 03-22-2004 01:28 AM

yup on those minimum of an 8 and straight pipes .. now that is toyt as a toyger :)

npaulseth 03-22-2004 08:59 AM

The 3800 is a good engine. If you want to go fast, get an LS1. If you want to sound good, get an LT1. The LS1s put down 300-310 stock with a 6 speed in most cases. Very very easy to get power out of. The only thing really that sucks about those cars is that the 10 bolt with break with the stock power level and sticks. There was a guy at dodd that was on his 3rd ten bolt already. Nothing is better than a turbo ls1, except for maybe a twin turbo ls1, with say 1100 RWHP.

If you want to go fast some what reliably, the LS1 is the way to go.

Get the V8, the AT's in those things are pretty decent. You will have to deal with typical GM quality though...everything is made of cheap plastic and a '98 should have already begun the interior falling apart process.

npaulseth 03-22-2004 10:09 AM

The interior in my 97 LT1 was actually the best out of ever car I've owned, except for maybe the WRX. The leather seats are very nice. My 97 had no signs of wear at all when I was forced to sell it last September. The 6 speed tranny in the f-bodys (T-56) is a dream. I was able to get it in first at 25 MPH when niteryder and I went at it last summer.

Kracka 03-22-2004 12:02 PM

I beleve that Allan mentioned that it will be AT they are interested in. Don't the AT's generally turn better ET's for the non-terriffic driver (no offense to anyone as we are all professional-grade racecar drivers :) )?

Jacek 03-22-2004 01:39 PM

talk to bruce from back home.

Goat Blower 03-22-2004 01:41 PM

Definitely get the V8. Getting a six in that car is like getting Pam Anderson without the boob job.

Speaking of that, I just picked up a 91 Firebird with a TPI 350 auto. Build quality is for shit, but she'll smoke the hides forever. Videos coming soon.

blown_turbo_tsi 03-22-2004 10:22 PM

i would say that the ls1 would be a very good choice and if you still are a tad open minded about your tranny choice.... the t-56 is a great tranny and you'll have tons of fun rowing through the gears.... oh yeah and the ram air or fire hawk look a little better than the formula v8 in my opinion.... just my .02

AJ 03-22-2004 11:00 PM

No 5/6 speed wanted. This would be a fun nice weather daily driver for Jana mostly. A new baby for the summer months. We have the normal daily driver in the 1.8L Eclipse which run pertty dam good. For the winter we would stick to the 1.8L and then maybe keep our eye out for another 1G AWD DSM or a sweet deal on a 2G.

So we want an auto for driving ease and no, it probably will not be modded.

Kracka 03-22-2004 11:07 PM

How come she/you want to get rid of her GSX?

A//// Guy 03-22-2004 11:35 PM

Yea thats my question too^. If its much cheaper Id go GM, if not then keep the GSX.

Where did the Mini Idea go? I think that was the best idea for a fun DD and gets good gas too.

Raptor 03-23-2004 12:47 AM

Yet another opportunity to post whore! :bounce:

Allan you would look right at home with a mullet, Jana is a different story. A v8 bird would be fun to mod at the shop, you couldn't really get one and expect me to sit back and leave it alone could you? At least with the 1.8, you don't have to worry about that.

AJ 03-23-2004 12:57 AM

The GSX is just getting old, but she still oves it and if she keeps it it will still be her baby. Slow retarded baby, but her baby none the less. If it was my call we would trade the GSX and the Truck in on a new Titan!

Or I would love to get an early 70s mercury cougar.

b00stingsx 03-23-2004 01:35 PM

If you have to settle for a v6, you could always pick up a supercharger from a series 2 3800 (gtp), and smaller pulley. IMO, get a v8, you will be happier in the long run... Check out the gtp forums, you could find one for a pretty decent deal.

Kracka 03-23-2004 01:44 PM

That "old" GSX of hers is still newer tahn 90% of the cars on this board....and newer than the 'bird you are looking at.

A//// Guy 03-23-2004 01:51 PM

Yea, she prolly just wants a change of a car. Not really yearwise but overall something other than the GSX.

Get a 1G! ;)

520Talon 03-23-2004 01:56 PM

Dude, if your looking for a fun summer sometime driver there are alot of good options. One that comes to mind is a Jeep. Wranglers are fun in the sun and you can take them to the trails as well.

If you are stuck on the F-body, my roomates going to sell me his 95-96 Z28 white with T-tops and black/red interior for cheap. We can go cruise the auto F-bodies. For a little bit. I'm going to probable trade it for a wrangler.

Jana 03-23-2004 02:36 PM

It's just another idea we are tossing around. I have always love the TA's/Firebirds. I'm just looking into right now, nothing's for sure. Besides, I highly doubt I will get what I want for my car....

The Mini is out just because it's so expensive in the model I want.

npaulseth 03-23-2004 04:42 PM

The auto F-body is the best bet for drag racing.

unreal808 03-24-2004 12:34 AM

I love the 1998"WS6" 350 V8, 320 hp 345 ft-lbs torque. I would get a stick you could still get like 26 MPG..............WS6.com

BUCKY 03-24-2004 12:54 AM

Ill sell you the spyder. Its in perfect shape and has never been beat on.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAH :liar: HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Jepherz 03-25-2004 01:25 AM

get the 5.7. People who get them dyno tested find that they actually deliver more than promissed, some z28's have close to 400 crank HP. Nobody is sure if it's because corvette is their true flagship or if it's to get by high insurance rates.........All I know is they are FAST!
