Picked up a new car

I picked up a 1998 Subaru Impreza RS from a guy in Cottage Grove. He's actually a Subaru mechanic and the car is 1 of 150 of the specific color scheme ever made. All the suby guys went a little crazy when I told them I found this actually haha. It's nothin crazy special imo. Your basic 2.5L 4 banger. It moves alright, but it's nothin to really brag about. I pretty much bought the car because I wanted something reliable and fun.

Wellllll, it turns out this "reliable" car didn't even make it home last night when I bought it haha. I took a pit stop in a snowy icy parking lot with a friend while we waited for our buddy to show up. I slid around a little and did a couple harmless donuts. Nothin crazy or hard. Well the car studderd and then died. At first I thought it somehow cut fuel and that wa the problem. It was getting a spark and turning over just fine. The motor just wouldn't catch and go. So I parked it for the night and planned on dealing with it in the morning.

Well this morning I got it towed to a shop a mile away (Maple Grove Auto Service). The guy thought it was something with the timing belt. Thinkin it might have skipped a few teeth or somethin. Well they quoted me $1200 to fix the flippin timing belt! haha that's a joke. I talked it out with the guy I bought it from and he agreed to fix the car for free labor if I paid for the parts. I think this is a very fair deal. He was misinformed about when some maintenance was actually done unfortunately, but we've got it worked ot now. The car should be up and runnin by next wednesday.

Anyways, on to pics!

Back on the tow truck you go! haha. It's good thing that the seller worked everything out with you though. You'll have to get some better pics once you get it back.

how the hell can you go from your beautiful DSM to that ugly enemy. Swap in the forrester guage cluster it looks a lot cooler

I love the late 90's 2.5 rs, looks good. Does suck it crapped on ya right away though. And you can always do the sti drivetrain/motor swap....

Re: Picked up a new car

late 90's 2 door RS = SEX, this is on my "must have" list.

Im gonna get one (Blue, gold rims)
put either a 3.0L or a 3.3L flat six into it.
Turbo the piss out of it.

Awesome car

Re: Picked up a new car

^haha yea.

idk if I'm a huge fan of the color, but there's a full dsm thread on one of the suby forums for previous dsm owners. All of em said their dsms were was faster than the subies will ever be, but they like the subies more. idk I'm just lookin for somethin I won't slip into modding for a while.

sti motor/tranny swap is a definite possibility in the future. Gotta wait till I'm outa school though for that one.

I've always liked the way those cars look. Sucks that it crapped out right away, but it's good that the seller is willing to work it out for you.

Those are fun little cars. The super aggressive tranny ratios make them scoot decently.

I've always been a fan of the RS, nice find!

I've tuned a SVX swapped RS, very tight room with that 6 cylinder in that engine bay, better bet would be to swap in wrx bits and pieces.

scheides 01-10-2009 11:06 AM

Re: Picked up a new car

Cool car, if subaru would have only brought the wrx here during that generation and not the next generation, I might have looked more in that direction instead of DSM's. They have just gone downhill looks-wise imho since that car.

The color makes me want to vomit a little, but thats cool. Only in my mouth.

"Misinformed about maintenance records" hrm....seems a common thread for subarus. My friends bought a nice 1999 or 2000 outback and the clutch had been done 20k miles previous. Well, thats the only thing the guy could not find the record of, and guess what broke shortly after my friends bought it! The clutch. Still, it was the cleanest one in the cities for the price.

Looks nice, I actually like the green/gold combo.

Re: Picked up a new car

not a bad pick up at all. A cousin of mine has a 4-door RS model and he put in the japan sti engine(version 4 sti engine...i believe..) and that beast is just an all-out beast in the inside and a great sleeper in the inside. great car, but i love the dsms more...much more easier to work on. ;)

Re: Picked up a new car

I like the looks of the 2dr RS's but Boxer motors suck.

They should've left them in BMW motorcycles where they belong.

I like it. One of those is my my 'must have' list as well, so I'm slightly jealous.

Negative. A lady owned it for the first 100,000 miles and then this guy owned it since.

Rally and beating a car to hell are pretty much one in the same.

P.s. thanks for all the kind comments, and I hope we can still all be friends even though I've converted to the "dark side" haha.

btw, I made a comment on the suby boards to see a 4g63 swap into one of these bad boys lol!

I didnt think the 2.5 was a freewheeling motor. So you have no valve damage.

It'll be nice to have a car that can turn for a change :) If I wanted a car faster I woulda had to buy another dsm. Speed was fun, but I need to really focus on school now. We'll see if I find a good deal on a busted sti in the future :)

Re: Picked up a new car

Sorry to hear about your problem, glad the guy is working with you like a gentleman.

What you have is one of my dream cars. It WILL be my next car I buy and if you ever sell it let me know. I DO love the 99-00 GC8 a bit more because they had the bigass fog lights and wasn't a fan of the 98 gold rims, unless on a black RS.

You need a catback at least, the sound those engines make is unbelievable.

Thanks thanks thanks! I'll try and get a few better pics after I go pick it up this weekend. The guy gave me a set of summer and winter tires as well as a set of brand spankin new rs25 floor mats. Right now there's blizzaks on all 4's and the thing just grabs in the snow like no other.

Green for the money, Gold for the honeys.

Atleast you stuck with awd. Looks nice, definetly get exhaust. There's a sweet ass maroon Suby like this one up in Fergo, always caught my eye.

time to swap out that boxer engine, get a 6 bolt in there, mounted on that suby trans, budget turbo setup, jdm sti tails, jdm sti wing, and you have yourself a sweet car.

jk

i have a feeling you're gonna like it. I've always wanted one but people want so much money for those.

Exhaust will more than likely come soon, but if I do it I know I'm going to want to go headers on back, and headers for this car are like more than a full cat back! Modding this will be a little slower if I even mod it at all. I already miss my cheap dsm parts haha.

And if you look hard you can find a few good deals. I picked this up for $4200, granted I've gotta throw around $300 into it right away, but I'd still consider that a decent deal.
