My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Took the head off today and found this stuff:
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC02429.JPG http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC02431.JPG Maybe the turbo's too big. I blame it on the turbo. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC02432.JPG http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC02434.JPG http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC02443.JPG Milky coolant-oil mix on that stud that came out of the hole between 3 and 4. The block has little visible cracks from the stud hole to each coolant hole around it - the crack trifecta. The headgasket also failed, but I think it was because of the crack or whatever caused the crack. I am happy to know what it is, and I'm thinking it wasn't completely my fault, the block could have been weak there and perhaps even with a good tune it would have done this. The pistons look pretty good, no visible damage, I bet the block is just fubar'd. So now the big question: buy someone's good shortblock or buy and build a wideblock 2.4 with dsm head and all that garbage? either way would be SO simple, but damn it if it doesn't cost an arm and a let. |
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Bummer man!
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
at least it's not the head! :) Too bad I spend a grand on machining though.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
That sucks dude.
As far as what motor route to go with. Do you want to keep it more original? I'd go with the DOHC 4G6 swap but I am not conserned about originality. If you wanted to keep it more collectable I'd stick with the truck motor. |

Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
well, it was balanced, the crank had to be welded and ground 10 under, polished, I had them put the pistons on the rods, etc. I just gave it all to them and they gave it back to me ready to assemble. And it was napa. :( maybe that was the problem from the beginning! haha.
But here's what I am going to do now. I am going to find a block, have it checked for cracks, if it checks out good, I'm going to have it bored .030 over and slap my innards into the fresh block and whip it back together. Any suggestions if I do it that way? |
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Sucky man, and you just got it running :(
Bring it back to napa and see if they'll warranty it! ;) |
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Maybe dont use a block thats been bored so much next time. Use a stock bore or maybe .010 over.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
I thought .030 was pretty standard overbore.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Thats on the large side. .010 is more common. The more material you leave the less your block integrity is compromised.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Yeah, I get that. Well, I have the 30 over pistons, so I may as well give 'em another shot at the big time.
I want to make as much power with stock rods and hyperU's as the people with forged pauter rods and wiseco pistons. Maybe I'll never get to, but I think tuning is the way. |
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
If it dies again, go the 4g6 truck block route.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
That sucks dude!
Sounds like you got a plan to get it back on the road again, hopefully the new block holds up to the punishment. |
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
That sucks alot! :(
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Sorry to hear, I was looking forward to seeing it up and running again.
my vote is 4G wideblock and T56 |
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
If another g54b fails, I will think about the 2.4, though a 2.0 might be just as cool. the best, of course would be the 2.4 with BC 2.6 stroker kit. hells yeah, stock displacement with DOHC, every conquest guys wet dream.

Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
I should get a 6G72 but the 3.5 liter version, and another 61.

Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Ok, help me find one, and help me set the aem up to work with it. :O I'll do it.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
If your going to go through the hassle, I'd just LS1 swap it, it would probably be cheaper.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
But not as awesome. If I was going for a v8 I'd use the aluminum DOD 5.3

2006 Engine Mitsubishi Eclipse 3.8L V6 MIVEC AT 9,000 miles E25047 $1500 Ernies Auto Parts USA-MI(Harrison-Township) Request_Quote 1-877-755-9550
Car-part.com There are two at Pam's in St. Cloud, but they don't say MIVEC. I wonder if a truck bell housing would bolt to your conquest trans? Or if a new tuck trans might be better? |
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
It's one-piece, so it would either be my stock trans or a t56 which would probably be my first choice anyway. 220mph, GO!

Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
oh, btw, is there one of those engines for closer to say... free?

I am. It's going to be done a week from today and driving around blowing up engines.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
The deck of the block cracked? That is really wierd.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Apparently it happens a lot. When I posted on SQC several people had the exact same thing happen, one guy on a completely stock engine.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Wow, never saw that in my SQ ownership. :( :( for you. Maybe get your block sleeved?
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
:( Bummer man.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Nah, no sleeves needed, just need to get it back together and get 'er tuned.

Just picked up this bad boy today. Too bad the car had to stay with the owner. |
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Nice, fairly easy to find?
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Yeah, it was a bit of a surprise that someone I knew locally had a spare. I had totally forgotten that he had it. But it looks fine, it probably would be fine just tossing it in there with stock pistons and junk, but he wanted to keep the crank cause it was mint so I just took the bare block. I'll transfer all my stuff to it if it checks out, which it will. Hot tank is a must, it's kindof filthy. Then it'll get bored to fit my slugs and then it goes right back in the beasty.
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
Your bouncing back quick, good work!
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
What's crappy though is that I can't just pop it in, I have to have it bored out, which costs money, I have to buy a lower end gasket kit, I have to have the head checked for warpage (maybe I can do that myself).
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
At least you don't need new pistons, rods or crank work though. A bore and gaskets aren't too bad, would have been cheaper if your old block didn't decide to be a boat anchor though. And yes, I want to see you use it as one! :bengals:
|
Re: My poopy conquest and it's cracked block
I have a few snap-on straight edges and feeler gauge sets, let me know when you what me to stop by and check the head. No charge as it can be on the way home from work.
