Just in case it isn't clear, this is a good example of why you should just leave your car be before the cruise, and if you're going to do maintenance on it, do it weeks and weeks ahead of time! Hopefully it can be together in time!

***EDIT*** Also, regular boost leak TESTs are your friend. When you do a lot of stuff to get a car ready, it's an easy thing to overlook!

I agree with not doing much to your car before a cruise or dyno day and make sure it's in tip top shape, but in this case, I think it's better that it blew up on the dyno rather than in the middle of some corn field halfway to Duluth.

very true, more or less im testing my car and the new parts before the cruise to work out any bugs, and weve been finding and working out quite a few. it will be close for the cruise :D

Re: Someone blew up their car today....

*Update*

just talked to shane, they allready got the head off today, but they were out of the head studs. They will be getting the head studs in tomarrow, and throwing the head back on tomarrow.

along with that they fixed a boost leak, and if all goes well i will be tuned on friday and ready for the cruise!

The stock MLS gasket for the evo is nice, some arp's should hold just fine.

Good you're getting a new one put on, but do you know WHY it blew in the first place?

Shane@DBPerformance 10-08-2008 09:19 PM

Re: Someone blew up their car today....

We don't know why exactly. It was on the dyno making pretty consistant power and not experiencing bad knock or anything. A/Fs were in the low 11s on E85 and nothing crazy for timing. We would get a couple counts of knock on some pulls during spoolup sometimes, but it would go away once it got into the powerband. The car has been through some hell lately though with the intake cam being a tooth off and some other timing belt problems and fighting to get rid off all the boost leaks. It was on stock head bolts also, which might have just been the weak point(even though there are other Evos making more power on the stockers without problems). We did a compression test before the problem yesterday and then one today after the waterpump blew out last night and then numbers were the same.

Re: Someone blew up their car today....

I see the head off but I don't see any damage? That's a good thing, eh? How bad is the gasket?

Toss in them arps and gasket and put that bitch back together! We got twisties to shred!

I'm thinking it's just a combination of all of the above that shane mentioned that led to this...pushing more boost, more power, more fuel, the car is gonna be ready to kick some ass after this.

When I blew the water pump freeze plug out on my car (like 311's did in teh video) it was on the street, doing 2-step at an intersection. I ended up going BACK to that intersection later to find the freeze plug, running through traffic to grab this shiny thing in the middle of a busy crossroads! When it happened, I suspected the head lifting and pressurizing the coolant chamber. I ordered ARP's soon thereafter and had shane install them via the 1x1 method and I have had zero issues since. 29psi daily now.

You know he blew his frost plug or you are guessing?

And there normally isn't "damage" do the deck or head with a simple blown head gasket. The damage will show on the gasket itself.. thats the purpose of the gasket. However if you look at the pics, you can see different areas that show some burn/darkened areas where combustion may have been pushing past the circumference of the cylinder walls.

If there was pre-ignition or something more violent, then you'll see damage to the hard parts.

:) I disagree. Boost leaks are bad!! Make sure you DON'T have any!!!

On the other hand, boost leak CHECKS are good! Do THAT every once in a while. :P

Ahh ok, My bro had a headgasket let go on his 1G and it took a small gouge out of the head from the gasket being pushed back.

Yes the water you see splashing and the pop you hear in the video he posted was when the frost plug popped out.

RIGHT! BOOST LEAK TESTS ARE GOOD! Not actual boost leaks. They are bad. :(

OK, but like the other guy corrected your post about boost leaks(simple brain fart when typing).. for the same reason I made my comments. Only because newbs will read your posts as golden and then when they hear a HG has blown(on any car/engine).. they will believe that damage to the head or block is the norm, which it isn't. I understand that damage does and can happen, like it did to your bro, but it isn't the norm for a blown HG.

And I didn't hear much on that vid because my laptop speakers suck, but that is generally what a HG blowing under load on a dyno looks like(some worse and some not as apparent), so it's not obvious to me that it was a frost plug.

I talked to shane just a bit ago, and the head studs didn't come in until about 3 today, so its going to be a race to get it done.

worst case scenario, ill hitch a ride with totaleclipse_05 (shotgun)
