Rotor stuck to hub

So yeah, went to change out my rotors and calipers and ran into a slight problem. Went to put a bolt in the hole to push the rotor off the hub and the damn hole stripped. Bolt fit in all the way in until it pushed on the hub, as soon as there was any resistance it stripped. Actually it did it to both of them. So I got out my maul and went to town. Still doesn't move. I used a ton of PB blaster on it before I even attempted to get it off, so that wasn't an issue. Only other things I can think of is trying to re-tap the holes and heating it up and smashing the shit out of it again. Keep in mind I hadn't tried the heating it up yet simply due to the amount of pb blaster used.

So any one else have any better ideas?

Heat away. The pb blaster will burn off too fast to cause any kind of issue.

Wow, if you only knew the horror I went through to change one of my rotors. No need for heat, here's the sure fire way.

Here's a pic of my rotor after I got it off.

And hub.

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

The above is a great solution. Usually beating the piss out of it will work, but there's really no need to be so rough on it. The torque of a strong bolt and breaker bar works great.

Thanks, don't know why I didn't look in vfaq...I know damn well I am going to have to do this to all four rotors too. You should see my lugs. I am going to have to order new ones or some ARP's. Chunks missing out of them and so much rust. It's pretty bad.

Don't you mean studs???

One of the first things when I've bought a car is to clean the studs and put some antiseize on them. You never know with previous owners.

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

Just beat them off with a hammer. Make sure it's at least a larger deadblow hammer not some wussy carpentry hammer. Then you hopefully won't have to replace your bearings.

Out of the 1000 break jobs I've done I've never not been able to remove a rotor with a hammer. Sometimes you just havve to keep pounding away :)

Considering I did that with a 4 lb maul for about an hour and it didn't move, I don't think that is going to work.

I just use a bfh
I have a ton of stock studs if you need a set or 2

Need moar hammring
You might have to beat them untill they break but they will come off.

Are you beating on the face of the rotor?

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

Wow, I can't say I've ever had to take a hub off either. If you're replacing the rotor, there's no need to worry about messing it up beating it with a hammer. From what i can see in your pics, you either didn't hit it enough, or didn't hit it hard enough

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

The key is a hard smack. You can beat the shit out of it at 1/2 power all day long, but a couple big ass smacks and they usually pop right off. You need mo powa! Or just cheat and use the bolts :D

hippiekiller 09-24-2008 01:01 AM

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

Power is not the issue. I am not small nor a weakling. And I was beating the shit out of it. So I am going to try the bolts.

I thought I was supposed to smack the windshield?

Are you beating the shit out of both sides? And turn the rotor every now and then.

My rotors were STUCK. They were cracked, and chunks missing by the time I got them off, and the pad surfaces were so f***ed from being hit.

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

Good luck with thos. Mine was stuck and I beat on it with a hammer and the wheel bearing broke apart so that might be your only option.

hippiekiller 09-24-2008 10:47 AM

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

Sleepy, yes both sides and turning it.

The bolt option seems like the best thing right now. I'll have to give it a shot tomorrow. And take some pics.

I meant are you hitting it on the front hub face inbetween the studs. And not just the pad contact area smartass. ;)

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

Yeah, not too much though. I have classes all day today until like 9 tonight and work will be slower than shit tomorrow so I will have some time to fuck with it then and see what happens. Hopefully the bolt technique will work.

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

Happend with my dads rotors when i replaced them while i was in town last. Smacked it for a while, then it just Ended up just needing a super hard hit of the hammer (i used a regular hammer because i hate being able to hear :( ).
I Used PB while tapping on it, then let that sit and moved to the other one, pb'd it while tapping. Then went in and ate some lunch. Came out fully energized gave it 3 or 4 super hard smacks and it popped off.

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

The front rotors on my 2gnt were rusted on to the Nth degree. It took a 15lb sledge hammer swinging at full power for over 20 minutes per side to finally get them off. Chunks of rotor were flying off at high velocity as I was doing this... very fortunate they even came off at all. I. HATE. RUST.

you really need to hit harder. dont be scared your not gonna hurt anything.

pbvlaster and taking a hammer to dofferent area's of the rotor works awesome

How many fucking times did I say I am hitting it as hard as I can? I broke the fucking rotor and it still hasn't budged. I am not the only one this has ever happened to.

Ya some people just don't get it when you say it doesn't move.

Did you ever get it off?

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

Not yet, haven't had time to dick with it here the past week or so. I have some bolts that are long enough now to push them off. Hopefully tues I will have some time to do it. Not like the thing is going to move until next spring anyway. I just wanted to double check if my wheels were actually going to fit.

Don't kill yourself or your car using that super duper sledge hammer... use the bolt technique.

hippiekiller 10-24-2008 10:13 PM

Re: Rotor stuck to hub

bolt technique ftw. Should have pics of the stop tech's up by the end up of the weekend.
