Paint Engine Bay?

I have a burgundy 92 AWD Talon. One of my favorite things is to clean up the engine bay. For awhile now I've been thinking of spraying my engine bay semi-gloss black (flat is too gray, and gloss would look too shiney). Anyone have any opinions? The current engine bay has a few scratches, and I'd like to fill in un-used holes. Also, My intercooler piping is powdercoated gloss black, and my v/c is a Hyundai one painted purple lol. With a semi gloss bay, would gloss black I/C piping be too much?

Paint it the same color as the car.

Same color as the car has my vote, and glossy as hell.

^What he said.

I hate when engines aren't the same color as the car.

Well I think he should paint his engine bay the same color as the car I dont know why you would want him to paint his engine the same color!! lol

Sometimes I think painting the engine bay a different color is a nice contrast, but I think you should keep it the color of your car! Your choice in the end really though, your car.

You wanna see some contrast? LOL! Talk about someone being bored and took it out on the car. Car was a 1994 G20 (Nissan Primera).

Here's one I was playing with to test the duplicolor engine high temp paints. The valve cover lasted well but not the heat shield.

When I donated the car later on, the engine bay actually still looked almost the same. Clean and colorful!

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

I am talking about painting the engine bay sheetmetal itself, not the engine or accessories. I have seen some cars with black engine bays, I like how it hides unwanted stuff, and makes your nice stuff stand out more.

Anyone have any pics? I know TKR's wife's car has a flat black bay, I have seen some at the cookout last year and liked it.

Also, I'd have to get colormatched spray paint for a gloss bay from like Welle's or something, and that shit ain't cheap!

dude pink! thats my vote lol, i say you should fill all un-used holes like you said, and paint it the same color, i think when some one has a different color bay, it looks like they got into an accident or something. if you need help let me know i would be glad to lend a hand, "if you decide to pull the motor"

Here is a site I would buy paint from. They allow you to search for your specific vehicle and sell the paint proper paint for that vehicle code.

Welle's mixes paint in a can for ya and it is the real stuff. They can even do a 2 part clear coat. I used the 2 part on Cassie's GTP and people couldn't believe I painted it out of a can in a garage :D

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

the talon is flat black and the evo is gloss black. I just paint them all black sense I started out with hot rods and we always did them in black. it come down to what you like. I think it is just easy to do it in black and when it gets scratchs, ect it is just a easy fix black is black

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

I like when the bay matches the body color, but some diff. colors look good, i think mark's evo looks good with the black.

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

I am almost considering black just because I could be ghetto and paint over the brake lines then... and it would hide crap like the harness better, and make my neat parts stand out haha. But with my same color I'd have to mask, and thats just soooo hard ya know. hahaha. I almost decided to not paint it after I cleaned up the bay with degreaser and a tooth brush, but I said eff it, I already pulled the engine I might as well paint this.

**Anyone know what Welle's needs to color match? the car, a part of the car (does it matter if its plastic or metal), etc?

Paint code otherwise they can look it up per make model and year as well.

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

I've always considered repainting this car a different color, maybe I should paint the engine bay black....?

Or should I stick with the current stock color?

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

UPDATE:
Welle's could not/would not put my paint in an aerosol can because they said it had too much pearl in it, it would clog the nozzle and end up with a shitty color.

I'm bummed.

No more engine bay painting plans for now.

But, I'm doing what I can to make it perdy.

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

Anyone know of a close over the counter color I could get? I picked up a small can and it was too red, but had he right amount of flake... just wish it was a little darker.

sleepydsm 09-08-2008 01:44 AM

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

Ok I have three options:

a)Leave the engine bay the way it is

b)Paint it gloss black

c)Paint it semi-gloss black (my original plan).

My mentality behind this is: My current engine bay has lots of scratches, and I want to fill the unused holes. I can't get the stock color, so black is really the only option. I thought gloss black would be too much, but after I tested some tonight I take it back. I think black would help hide some of the other crap, like the wire loom and such.

I just want a new-looking engine bay that you can eat food off of. Right now its clean, it just isn't nice enough.

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

Stick with your plan. I think semi-gloss will look good and I know you will be happy with it.

Jon Michael 09-08-2008 05:16 AM

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

I'd say go with the semi-gloss black. It sounds like it is your first choice, and what you really want. It'll look good, too.

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

I've been masking, removing shit, sanding, doing a bunch of prep work and it sucks. I will have pics when its done.

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

gloss bitch! Semi gloss doesn't look as good. It looks like glorified primer.

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

I say semi gloss. If you drive the car regularly at all, it'll end up looking semi gloss in a month or two anyways, unless you clean it every week or so.

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

Haha, I do clean my shit about that often... Anyways.

Semigloss and clear was layed down this morning. Tonight I felt it up like I feel your mom, and some areas don't feel so glassy smooth as others.

Can I wet sand this shit?
I put on a ton of clear, btw. I think the "rougher" areas is just overspray.

What is the best way to wetsand this? 2000? Is that too high? Is 1000 too low?

Will I have to buff the clear after wetsanding it?

Kevin 1G Drummer 09-10-2008 11:33 PM

Re: Paint Engine Bay?

I'd say 1000 would work well. It'll take it down pretty fast and still buff out reasonably well. What kind of clear did you use? You'll want to be carefull when buffing it. If it came from a spray can, don't use cutting compound, or you'll pull the paint off. Just use swirl mark remover and it'll polish right up.
