Finally, Dyno Results!!!

It's been a while since I've had the evo on the dyno with it running properly, but yesterday it finally worked out. The day before I had my doubts, as of course I blew open a massive 2" hose in my hose connecting my bov to my UICP and the car ran like crap.

I spent some good time on the street with my laptop and LC-1 getting stuff dialed in so as to minimize the headaches on shane, but really I probably only made things worse ;)

Anyways, mod list (power stuff only, of course):

Buschur Racing 3" TBE w/ bullet testpipe
Buschur Racing Intake kit
BR Deluxe FMIC kit (3.5" core)
BR Upper IC Pipe
OEM IX BOV
HKS 280 cams
ARP headstuds
BR Ported/Coated Exhaust Mani
Ported Turbine Housing
OEM Evo IX turbo
BR SS O2 Housing
BR Ported Intake Manifold w/ EGR delete
BR 65MM TB
Walbro 255HP fuel pump
4x Kracka Vent setup w/ ebay catch-can
Aquamist HFS-1 Alky Injection Kit
FIC 1050cc injectors
GM BCS
Evo X MAP sensor
Innovative LC-1
Tephra v5 ROM w/EGT Elim & Direct boost mods

Pump gas (BP 92), ~24psi, tapering to 22psi (woot! ecu-controlled boost!)

Boost curve needs some work, but this is my low-power tune, so it doesn't get as much attention as the alky tune :)

Anyways, on to the fun part!

Pump + Alky, 28.5psi tapering to 22psi
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo8/IMG_7472.sized.jpg

As you can see, the turbo is just out of steam and dispite my best efforts and 100% DC on the GM BCS, it just won't hold more boost up top:

Overlay, what can alky do for YOU?!?!
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo8/IMG_7477.sized.jpg

To flip between these two tunes, I have but to push the power button on my DDS gauge (part of the aquamist kit) and bam! The power is there :D While on the dyno, I tested out Tephra v5 mapswitching as I am using it for a failsafe. If the alky fails, I drop down to the pump gas tune. We did a pull, and I flipped the DDS gauge off right around 5000rpms. This seems like the worst thing you'd wanna do, but I wanted to be *sure* it was working!

Flip it off, and boost drops:

And AFR stays nice and safe :D Success!

Comments, Q's, and criticisms welcome :D

I'm impressed. That's a bigger difference than I ever gave alcohol injection credit for.

Very nice!

How safe is this alcohol injection kit? Is it something that can be relied on by an autocrosser? I just imagine myself installing it, getting tuned, then having it fail and popping my engine during a run.

Re: Finally, Dyno Results!!!

Pretty stock-ish looking under the hood, nothing fancy. This pic is from when I finished my Aquamist install:

I have a better setup with Kracka Vent's and the catch-can now, it's a little different now. Perhaps some day I'll get one of the new FP Red's, and it'll still look stock-ish, but put down more like 420whp :)

Re: Finally, Dyno Results!!!

His kit has a flow based failsafe, incase the pump is failing or the tank runs dry, I believe. And I think he has it wired so that if the main unit loses power that the ECU switches to the pump map. He shut it off during one run and it changed to the pump gas map without even a lean spike or anything.

Heh, please note the last two pics I posted. If something goes wrong, boost lowers, and the fuel and timing map from the base map (the pump gas map) is used. I have done this several times and logged *ZERO* knock during the transition. It is perfectly safe. Warrtalon on evolutionM ran an SMC alky kit and he autoX'd competitively with it for several years. He recently switched to E85.

Okay, I guess I'm confused as to how turning the Aquamist unit off, or any error for that matter, activates the map switching. I did read up and the DDS senses flow and tank level. Water/alcohol injection is legal in Street Prepared. :smoking:

It is part of the Tephra mods to his ECU. You run a wire from one of the Aquamist's map switch outputs to the ADC0F input on the ECU.

those are pretty solid numbers

Looks great, I'm going to take down your non-alky numbers though!!! :D

Re: Finally, Dyno Results!!!

yea, the pump gas tune was not really aimed towards max power, you prolly already got me beat. :). Maybe less boost and more timing would make more power, but meh, I'll flip the Alky on if I wanna go fast :). 320whp is still plenty fun though!

Mattd, cams and Alky :) :) :). Doooo it!

358 is a great number, thats a pretty damn fast DD street-Evo!

No cams, damn it! I'm not running in Street Modified if I can compete locally (ie. win/trophy) in Street Prepared without R-compounds. :)

I don't understand the affliction with alky injection when we have E85 all over town. $.80 cheaper than 87 octane and you can have all the power all the time without worrying about switching maps. What am I missing here?

Some of us travel to places that don't have E85. That is my main stipulation for not even thinking of trying it.

Re: Finally, Dyno Results!!!

Yup, I love alky injection and wanted to see what it can do for me, and really work the technology behind this mapswitching stuff with the stock ECU. I'm *very* happy. I saw my car pick up 10whp with 1-2* of timing increase on the dyno, but it wanted to knock a bit during those pulls. So, I plan on now taking these base numbers and trying out different mix combos of alky/meth/water to see if I can run more timing.

I have enough injector now for E85, so that will come in due time. Now that I have wideband in-car, it's more about me playing with the different alky mixes and doing seeing what I can do with the car. Then it's up to shane to really make it soar....or sore if it's way wrong :P

MattD, I didn't catch the diff b/w Street Modified and Street Prepared earlier. Alky can be worth just as much as cams, so it's crazy it's allowed. Aquamist HFS-5 is probably what you want, although you can start with an HFS-1 and see how you like it :D

Re: Finally, Dyno Results!!!

So was this all your tuning or did you get a little help from shane? I forgot to tell you that on baserun after you helped me with the tune I got 243awhp, that was way better than the 212awhp that I got at the mitsu dyno day. Great numbers tho, I might want to switch to alky!!!!

Re: Finally, Dyno Results!!!

Doh! Fixed ;)

Mike, I did a lot of the tuning, but the tune was based loosely on shane's original tune, and it was a lot of me proposing changes and then getting the nod or 'meh' from shane as to whether it'd make power or not. I'm still pretty green to this, so having some guidance is insanely nice. That and the dyno to see what's going on!

Shane is an amazing tuner, if you don't bring your car (not just mike, anyone reading this) to him to get tuned, you're not getting the most out of your car!

Ya Im planning on getting it tuned up at dp once I get my Hks 280's, I made 284 after a little more tuning at rs last weekend, so I will see what it makes on DB's dyno at the cookout dyno day!

Nice, looks like i got some catching up to do.
I think 95tsi made 358 on his 2g, remember that 16g thread.
