What tint?

Ok, i got pulled over yesterday for tint, i didn't know they changed the law about the tint having to be 50% all the way around the car now.

So my question is, what level should i do that won't get me hassled.
I can't live without it all my cars have it, even my beater.

I think 25% should keep me out of trouble but still be dark enough to be useful.

Re: What tint?

35% is generally fairly safe to have. 30% seems to be the the line between cops not caring and getting pulled over constantly for it. I had 35% on the S2k and now on the Evo and have never been pulled over for it; I was given a ticket for it once in the S2k when pulled over for speeding but that cop was a total prick and gave me a ticket for everything he could find (I ended up getting out of it so no biggie).

Generally... LOL! ;)

I have 35% and I've been pulled over three times in 2 1/2 years. Last time was just a week ago.

There have been others times when I've been parked next to an officer, next to one at a stoplight, and they didn't even look at me twice.

I just pay the fine and think of it as a yearly dark window tax. Meh... :D

Re: What tint?

If I tint my Talon, it will be 50% just because these kinds of cars can be cop magnets already the way they are. I don't need to give them another reason to pull me over.

Re: What tint?

I had 30% on my eclipse and never got pulled over for tint, but a state patrol guy "warned me" that I should take my tint off (I parked and was walking into a building and he pulled up and called me over to him). Local cops never cared one bit, but state patrol guys are dicks. Ask 311evo haha.

Re: What tint?

50% is safe, I say if you don't know and don't want to be hassled about it, go 50%. I have 30% on my evo, been pulled over 3x in 2 years specifically for tint, and 2 other times I was hassled about it while being pulled over for no front plate or speeding.

I'm pretty sure the law has *always* been 50% all around on cars, it has not changed recently. I just discovered it myself about 2 years ago (I thought the same as you).

As far back as I can remember living here in MN (since November of 2004), the law has been 50%. I checked the laws when I moved here with my dark tinted 1990 Corolla haha!

Re: What tint?

Yup, its been 50% all-around for quite a while.

Ive had 35% for over a year and have not been pulled over ever. Id say thats your safest bet unless you want to go ultra light and do 50%. Id say 50% isnt worth the money though.

Re: What tint?

Well, SAFEST bet is 0% :D IMHO, it depends entirely on where you drive, the time you're there, the cops mood, and the alignment of the stars.

Tint tickets are fuking dumb, if you get one, go to court and fight it, I just cleared myself of 2 of them :)

Re: What tint?

What I dont understand at all, is the fact that suv's can have dark tint in the back from the factory at about 35%, but cars cant have any.

You can hide a whole lot of hoodlums in the back of an suv. Just doesnt make any sense. Also how southern states can have much darker tint because its hot there, but really its just as hot here most of the summer.

A lot of laws are stupid and make no sense; especially ones in MN.

Anyway, I'm going to head on over to WI with a duck on my head :)

Don't forget that driving like an assclown will get you pulled over for "no reason" too. I drive like a grandma 99% of the time and don't get hassled.

Unless something's changed Minnesota is the only state with 50%. I'm sure Maine and Alaska allow 35% or darker. We've just got paranoid cops with too much clout or something.

CA is 70%.

Ive had 20% on most of my cars. Never been pulled over with it or hassled.

I agree, but the times I have been pulled over for tint, I was being very grandma-ish, or sitting at a stop light even!

Actually, I take that back. The first time I was *gasp* turning my wheel as I was doing about 65 around a cloverleaf in EP (494W to 5W). I eased up at the bottom and kept going about 65 (right with traffic) and there was this under cover (that I see around my office area sometimes) back in traffic a bit. He caught up to me & pulled me over for tint, probably wondering wtf I was doing defying the laws of physics and such.

wow.... I'm surprised by cali's law. My buddy moved down there for 7 months and right before going he tinted his protege 5 wagon limo with 15% on the driver and passenger window.... and was never hasseled once, with a white car also. weird

SUV's have much darker tint than 50%, straight from the factory. Id say its about 35-40% for the rear windows.

scheides 06-10-2008 12:08 PM

Re: What tint?

SUV's are legal to 20% on all rear windows. Front windows, 50%.

Aaron, you should tint your windshield!

Wow, is that recent?

Trucks do have different standards. If I wasn't so lazy I'd dig up the specific tint law. I read through it once or twice hoping the Talon could qualify as a Multi Purpose Vehicle due to AWD and get dark tint on the rear. Our law isn't written that way though.

Truck/SUV/van tint is usually about 20% from the factory on the rear windows. There are no laws governing the rear tint on trucks/SUV/vans.

We've recently gone over all the tint laws in the tinting group-buy threads for anyone looking for more info.

The state laws vary quite a bit. New York allows no window tinting what so ever. MPV laws (trucks, SUVs, vans) are totally different and usually allow for dark tinting. So you could own a Ford Edge and have 20% windows and be just fine. If you owned a Ford Fusion, you'd be screwed with 20%. It makes no sense to me.

Minnesota
NO / 50% Film / 50% Film / 50% Film / 198x

Note : Darker tint is allowed with Medical Exemption.

Now, to get medical exception!

"My recommendation on the prescription for window tint would be to formalize it. Have the doctor provide you with a type-written (clear and legible) "prescription" for the tint (a specific tint percentage would help if possible) on a letter head from his office, signed and dated by him, including his contact information (i.e. address, phone, etc.). Some people are writing up their own "notes" and are just not good enough. We need to be able to verify the information."

Re: What tint?

Iowa is 70% in the front, and you can spraypaint your windows black if you want in the back, no rules for anything but the front. They don't differentiate between cars/trucks/suvs, etc.

I've driven next to dozens and dozens of Minneapolis cops, they never care, it's just on the interstate usually. Which is why I don't go over 4 or 5 over on the interstate anymore. I've only been pulled over for just tint once in like 5 years, and my two cars in that time have been 20% front and 5% back.

On the ask a trooper site some guy asked a question about how many tickets he could get before it became serious and said he did not intend to take the tint off and would keep paying the tickets.

The officer responded with something like 'as many as you can afford.' He was probably thinking tint tickets from the guy could pay his salary.

I have a medical exemption. I will be back in at the eye doctor this summer and will ask for it to be updated. My eyes are extra sensitive to light. This is no joke, but having the Doc write me up a note is a little funny.
