I was going to just run my stock turbo but....

I guess another OEM one will do! This is an OEM Evo IX turbo:

Just for fun, I set this next to a small 16G I had on my 2G:

See why running the stock turbo on an evo is so much fun? :) I also got a stock intake manifold and TB for cores for my porting project!

Any Evo 8 owners reading this, if you're looking for an upgrade, I actually have a second IX turbo on its way to me, kick ass upgrade, especially for 03-04 guys! I will let this second one go cheap!

Wow. That is actually pretty large. Atleast you can say you're still running a stock turbo! That's what I plan on doing with my FP18G, thank god my 18G is the same size as a 14b.

WTF size is your VIII stocker? That thing is huge compared to that 16g.

And in the first pic, is that the Six Million Dollar Man's boss in a glass thing? http://smiliesftw.com/x/lolcrx.gif

Stock VIII is just slightly smaller, I'm hoping for another 15whp or so out of this one. The thing on the wall is a boba fett figure I got for xmas a year or two ago, it never made it in the house :)

IX turbo will end up costing me a couple hundred bucks and I'm gunning for 375whp. The HTA is $3200 or more, depending on the kit. I don't need 450whp, much less 600whp on the stock block, this will be plenty of fun!

grind away. Should be fun. You should get a gram scale and see how much matierial you are removing. :)

The IM & TB are being sent to Buschur Racing for their port job. Same as they run on their 650+whp shop and customer cars with good results, and the price is right :)

It still baffles me how they can justify calling the Evo turbos "16g"

damn what a difference

Re: I was going to just run my stock turbo but....

I was going to wait until next week when my hand was fully healed, but the outside of the cut is 90% healed, and discovered a bunch of spare time this weekend so I went ahead and slapped this little toy in.

I kept it simple and left the exhaust manifold, downpipe, and hotside (previously ported, already a 10.5 since I have an 05) all bolted up:

IX turbo on the left, VIII turbo on the right:
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo8/IMG_0113.sized.jpg

VIII turbo next to that same small16g (see previous post)...looks a little closer in size, but I made ~330whp on this sucker!
http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo8/IMG_0116.sized.jpg

Instead of spending $100 on a new buschur outlet pipe, I opted to make a piece of IC pipe to fit in the missing space....very nice option in my opinion, with zero compromise in performance:

http://www.scheides.com/albums/evo8/IMG_0117.sized.jpg

Thanks kracka for your help cutting this! Pipe came from an old dsm j-pipe I had....a little JBweld around the end of each one to keep the couplers from slipping off ;)

In place and ready to rock!

Also, just as a reminder to everyone, DO A BOOST LEAK TEST! Time and time again people show up at dyno days and tuning sessions w/o doing this. This is a huge factor in making consistent power. I also took the time to check my tire pressure as well, all were low. With temps as cold as they are, its not uncommon for tire pressure to drop.

That reminds me Schiedes, Can I borrow your boost leak tester? I just wanna double check that my new BOV flange welds are good.

Sweet. Thanks! Don't forget the spacer thingy so it'll fit in my 4" coupler.

Looks good man! Can't wait to see what kind of gains you see off of it. :)

scheides 01-20-2008 09:41 PM

Re: I was going to just run my stock turbo but....

Based on my logs, the numbers suggest a solid 5% gain. That would be 17whp. We'll see when it comes time to dyno again.

Re: I was going to just run my stock turbo but....

nice. you sould have called I could have put some beads on the pipe

scheides 01-21-2008 12:32 AM

Re: I was going to just run my stock turbo but....

hrm, I'm looking at the numbers some more and its looking more like 8-9% gains....that would be 30+whp...but my BCS is goofed a wee bit and I'm running a tad more boost, maybe 1-2psi....no knock though :)

Mark, I didn't know you had a welder, I would have hit ya up! Oh well, not a big deal. If it ever comes off again, I'll have ya do it, for now this was the quick, easy, and while a wee bit ghetto, not bad. dsm style yo! ;)

TkrPerformance 01-22-2008 11:30 AM

Re: I was going to just run my stock turbo but....

If I did not have a welder I could have never made the evo

Kevin 1G Drummer 01-22-2008 07:32 PM

Re: I was going to just run my stock turbo but....

And I just welded on a new BOV flange saturday. I'd have been more then willing to put a few beads on some pipes for ya.

Re: I was going to just run my stock turbo but....

shittastic! Oh well!

I finally got to do some WOT 3rd and 4th gear on the freeway today now that some of the roads are more dry. Before the snow I had tweaked some of my ecu maps to account for the insane 380% load I'm hitting now, and the car feels SUUUUPPPPER good. 2nd gear is squirly in anything but the driest of dry roads.

Re: I was going to just run my stock turbo but....

Sounds fun. Do you have the other IX turbo still? You stated cheap, but what is cheap?
