So I know this is a car this is a car forum, but I know there's a few people here with bikes, so I decided I'd make a project thread. As some of you may know, I just got a new Suzuki SV1000 a few months ago since my last one got stolen.
I've never really liked the way the fairing on the SV's look, so I decided to take mine off and make a naked style bike. I ended up taking off almost 15 pounds of metal and plastic off the front end. I didn't weigh the brackets, and new lights before I put it all on, but it can't be more than a couple pounds. Another thing I did was gut the mufflers and cut them in half cuz the factory exhaust was way too quiet. I couldn't hear it at all at any speed above 50 mph, so that had to change. The reason I cut them in half, is cuz I kinda like the way a stubby exhaust can looks. The only thing with modifying the exhaust like that, is that it made it quite a bit louder than I would have thought it would be, so it looks like the first thing to be done this spring will be some slip-ons. The last thing I've done so far is remove the stupid mudflap from the tail section, and make a bracket for the lisence plate and turn signals. It's not totally finished yet, I'm gonna make a little flyscreen to cover up the wiring between the gauges and the new headlights, and put some frame sliders on it. I've also been considering painting the tank, and tail section white, and the chin spoiler and front fender black, I think that would make kind of a cool contrast, and I haven't seen too many white SV's around. Anyways, that's my project, and here's some pics of it. Feedback is welcome :) |

dude i LOVE the streetfighter look for bikes. The ktm superduke and Triumph speed triple are two of my favorite machines for sure.
I like the dual bulb arrangement you went with. You should remove the "handle slash wing" on the rear. It cleans up the look of the SV substantially. get rid of the passenger pegs too! put em back on when a lady friend wants a ride or something. |

The passenger pegs are the mounts for the exhaust cans, so I can't really get rid of those. A friend of mine has the handle removed from his SV, and I haven't really decided if I wanna take it off or leave it. One thing I forgot to mention is that it'll also be getting a seat cowl to clean the rear end up even more.
As far as factory streetfighters go, I really like the look of the Suzuki B-King http://www.cycleworld.com/article.as...article_id=298 and the Honda concept NAS http://www.sportrider.com/bikes/146_...nas/index.html The B-King is basically a re-designed Busa without the fairing. |

I love and hate you at the same time. That is pretty much exactly how I want to build a bike that I will someday own, so you have great taste, but you beat me to the punch.

Over the last couple weeks, I've been buying some new goodies!
First off, I got some Motrax bar end mirrors, so I can actually see behind me again! They replace the stock weighted bar ends, and attach to the end of the bar. While surfing ebay last week, I found the exact exhaust system I want to use. They go for $760 new, but I got this one used for $236 shipped. It's a little beat up, but nothing I can't deal with. In order to use this exhaust system, I need to either relocate, or eliminate the LED blinkers I bought to replace the stockers when I cut the shovel off the back end, so I bought a Clear Alternatives light with the blinkers integrated into the brake/tail light. A friend of mine has one on his bike, and I really liked it, so I decided to get one too. I've also been kicking around the idea of a new paint scheme. I think I've decided on a blaze orange/black scheme. The website isn't letting me attach pics right now, so I'll have to try again later. Hopefully I'll be able to start riding by mid/late March, weather and road contitions permiting. |

Sounds awesome! Post pics as you install stuff/swap stuff out, I don't get all the rear-end light switching that needs to happen.

The blinkers I have now stick out from the license plate mount, and that's right where the new pipes will be. So I could have just relocated them, but that would have just looked weird, and I didn't want to drill holes in the plastics.

It's been pretty nice lately, so I've been putting a little time into this project. First off, I installed the new exhaust system and installed the new tail light

Nice and quiet at idle, but crack the throttle and all hell breaks loose :D Today I installed the new Buell headlight and got it wired in, put on the frame sliders, and bar end mirror. So it's been forever since I've changed anything with this, but it looks like soon I'll be changing stuff inside the engine. At the least, crank and rod bearings.
As some of you have seen in the cruise thread, the oil drain plug somehow loosened up and fell out on my way to work Monday morning, dumping out all the oil just north of the lowery tunnel. I didn't notice it till I started into the corner exiting the tunnel and the rear tire started sliding out, almost causing me to lowside. At first I had no idea what happened. It was kinda cold, so I thought maybe I hit a slick spot or my tire deflated, or I ran over someone else's oil. Shortly after I got onto 35w southbound I started to hear a slight ticking, so I pulled off onto the 36th st. exit. By the time I slowed down enough to hear (wind noise) it was knocking pretty loud so I shut it off immediately. At first I thought the gasket blew out of the oil filter since I was just reading a magazine article about that happening, but upon closer inspection there was no drain plug in it. I threw it in the back of my brother's truck when he came to pick me up and brought it home, then went to work. When I got off work I stopped and picked up a new drain plug and some oil for it, got home and threw it in, started it in neutral and everything sounded ok. No knocks or unusual noises, so I thought I got lucky and made it out without any damage. Wrong. Yesterday I was cleaning all the oil off of everything and decided that while it was on the stand with the tire off the ground, I'd throw it in gear to make sure there was no noises while in gear and that's when it knocked a little bit. I bumped it up to 5th gear and let the clutch out, and it started knocking like crazy so I pulled the clutch in and shut it down. I ordered the factory service manual for it today, and I'm gonna start tearing it apart on Friday night or Saturday. Carnage pics to follow. |

Dude, that sucks. I'm sorry to hear. I know how shitty I felt when I just tipped my CBR over, so I can imagine how bad you feel.

Yeah, I was pretty pissed when I heard the knocking. I wanted to kick it over, but I didn't want to cause any more damage.
As far as rebuilding it, I've thought about throwing some higher compression pistons in it, but going e-85 would be quite a costly conversion. I have no idea where I would get injectors that would fit and supply enough fuel, and tuning it would be a bitch. Plus, there aren't any e-85 stations close to where I live. So it's probably just going to get the replacement parts it needs and built right, but on a budget. |

I had the same thing happen to my bike, luckily my oil light came on quick enough that I caught it before any real damage happened.
I'd also probably pick up a new tire if you can, my rear tire was never the same after oil got on it. Good news is you didn't low side or get hurt from it though! |

I started working on it today but since it's cold I didn't spend too much time on it, or put too much enthusiasm into it. Worked on it from about 10:30 till about 2:30
When I started on it the only thing off of it was the lower engine faring http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...V/P1010590.jpg Pulled off the gas tank, both seats, exhaust, air filter box and throttle bodies, loosened the rear plastics for access to wire connectors, radiator, oil cooler, disconnected all the necessary wires, and loosened the chain to get it off the drive sprocket. All that's left is to take out the engine bolts and pull the motor out of the frame. I got the motor out and half way torn down today, pics to come. Still not entirely sure what's making the noise but I'm leaning towards rod bearings. Both rods are on the same journal and there's a little side to side play on both rods which I don't believe should be normal. Hopefully I'll get a little more done on it tomorrow around dinner with the fam.

ive always been scared wtf happends if your motor locks up while goin down the high way. an unexpected rear tire lock up could possibly end up in you being squash on the pavement... just something i fret over

I snapped a cam in half on my fzr600 while doing about 85 on i94 through the lowery tunnel....that was NOT fun but I was able to grab the clutch before the rear tire locked up too bad. Fun times :)

Thankfully nothing here locked up. I got lucky on a couple levels with this.

Well, I finally got the case split today. It's for sure spun rod bearings. The mains and all the trans bearings are just fine, and the rods are barely damaged at all. I can't feel any of the grooves, but they look pretty bad, and the bearing for cylinder #1 is turned just a little bit in the rod and cap. I think I should be able to get away with just getting the crank polished. There is no scoring at all in it, just some light marks that are only visible, not able to be felt at all.
