Make slowboy not so slow
I found a pretty good deal on an almost-complete 6 bolt stroker motor here in Des Moines where my car took a crap on me. Basically it just needs cams and gears and it's ready to be put into my car. As a bonus, the guy is willing to help me for a weekend to do the swap. The motor has all the bells and whistles, I can't remember exactly right now what was put on it, but it totaled around $6000 for everything new, it has about 800 miles on it, and safely revved to 8500. My friend only made two passes on it before the car got destroyed (severe vandalism) and he parted it out. I believe he got 8 seconds in the 8th at 14psi with a FP3065 turbo.
For those of you who might know him, it's Mike Clark's motor from his green 1g, I believe he had a Haltech EMS on it. This is the guy who helped me do all my car stuff when I lived in Iowa a couple years back. Oh, I forgot to mention, it comes with a flywheel and clutch already on it and balanced. I should be picking it up this weekend and maybe doing the install over the next week or so. I'll post a complete parts list and pictures when I get them, I'm pretty excited for this. Comments and suggestions welcome. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
280 cams/adjustable cam gears
Dsmlink 255 fuel pump A smoother shifting tranny and you are setup for a very quick ride. I would say clean up the motor and engine bay while you are in there, make it perty. :) |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Very cool, now you can use that new turbo to it's full potential!
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Badass man, congrats to ya.
I hope everything goes well. |

Also, since I'm a noob, what would adjustable cam gears get me over regular ones from Mitsu? I can get Mitsu ones for free, the guy has some laying around he's throwing in with the motor. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Just use the stockers, and don't sweat the 20G's size on that stroker, it'll just spool like a 16G! That rocks!
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Use stock cam gears since you get them for free.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Yea that would be fine. The 20G will make it spool nice and fast!
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Yeah, that will spool yesterday.
Mike Clark, there's a name I haven't heard for awhile. Came on the local board years ago saying everyone was an idiot and his car would theoretically run 9's or something. He got booted from NABR for that stuff. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Oh yea. I knew the name, but couldn't figure out who it was.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
yea shane, he highly recommended you as a contact when I moved here..
Anyway, so is your (all) impression of mike he knew what me was doing, or what? He knows his shit as far as I can tell. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
sweet beans! cant wait to see its potential!
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Awesome man. If I'm home and you need a hand with anything, gimme a shout!
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Ok, I got most of the receipts from when the motor was built, here is a basic parts list:
Brand new 4g64 crank from Mitsu ($$) Eagle rods Magnus designed Ross pistons, 9:1 compression All new gaskets/bearings from Mitsu Forward facing oil filter housing ARP headstuds Align hone ACT2900 clutch Fidanza flywheel 1G head, ported, 1mm oversize valves, with a radius valve job, all work done by Arnolds Motor Supply in Ames, IA Crower springs and titanium retainers Stock cams!!!!! woohoo Also got a 1g intake mani and 1g throttle body for it. Everything has around 800 miles on it, I'll edit this post later when I'm home and I have the receipts with me. Right now I have all hoses/sensors unplugged from the engine, all fluids out, just need to get the axles completely out of the transmission tonight and pull the motor out tonight. I plan to have the 2g starter plate on the new motor with the transmission attached by the end of tonight. I'll try to get pics. Plus, the guy who sold me this just had his 2g motor go out, so he wants my stock shortblock once it's out. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Awesome! You will love driving that act2900 through downtown traffic haha.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Yeah, the 2900 gets a bit rough. It doesn't feel all that much worse than a 2600 though, but they are bad enough.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
you will get use to the 2900. I dont even notice it any more in the evo
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
that sounds like an awesome engine, and I thought the 2900 had a different angle of release or something to lower pedal pressure, but correct me if I'm wrong
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
You will definately want a bigger turbo. My 2.4L had my old GT3076 spooling hard all the time and saw full boost around 3200-3300 rpm.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Yuck, I hate how hard it seems to not spool my 16g, I cant even imagine with a bigger turbo. I bet its cool as hell when it actually is go time though! Nice buy man.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Once you get a big turbo you start to like turbo lag. It makes the car easier to drive.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
^^ I agree. You'll also notice better mileage when going to a bigger turbo for just around town driving. I saw about a 3.5 mpg increase when I went from my small 16 to my gt3076. But it's nice, cuz I can still get full boost before 4000 rpm if I decide to get on it
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
I got the motor out, transmission off, and the 2g starter plate off and ready to be put on the new motor. Also got the engine bay cleaned up a lot - one more wipe over and it should be ready to go.
I think I decided to take out the AC since I used it less than 10 times this past summer, I'll probably start taking that out Friday. Also, the guy who sold me the motor is also selling his stage 4 shep tranny with 4 spider center diff for really cheap. He offered it to his friend first, but I'll find out in the next day or two if I am able to get it. I have a bunch of pics, just no way to get them off the camera right now. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
AC is over rated, but keep the power steering or you will regret it.

Re: Make slowboy not so slow
why not I took all that crap out of my talon. it is fine when you are moving but living down town I would also leave it in
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Ok, much more progress today. I got the alternator and power steering pump on the new motor, got the cams installed too. When I got the valve cover off the old motor everything was really yellow inside, not much silver that I could see. I had to use the hydraulic lifters out of my motor and put them in the new one. All that is left now is to get the timing belts done and bolt on the transmission, then it will be ready to be put in.
Oh, I also got the motor mount ground so it fits with the 1g water pump, that's bolted on too. I'll probably put the turbo on it tonight as well. The AC lines and stuff are all out too. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Sounds good :)

Here are a few pics. I have way more, but it's too many to post. The first ones are of pulling the motor out, I was able to do it without help amazingly.
I also included a picture of some remnants of the balance shaft belt, I was pretty lucky it didn't affect the timing belt, no idea how long those were busted inside the timing belt cover. Lastly I included a shot of the new motor with the valve cover and cams on, and also the old head that looks like it's made of copper. |
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
lookin good man. I skimmed through the thread real quick, and didn't find anything... What turbo are you going to be using? Still on that T-28???
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
He's got a 20g on it now.
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
Aaaahhh. Throw some e-85 in it, and put that 20g around 28 psi and you'll have a fun ass car :)
|
Re: Make slowboy not so slow
I like the new engine a lot better, I bet it will hummmmmm right along!
