ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

http://reviews.cnet.com/portable-vid...-32595956.html

I kind of want to buy one, but I'm just not sure. The big thing I want is the Wi-fi. With Minneapolis going wireless soon, I'll be able to get on the internet and check my email, search google, and post on style, from almost anywhere in the city, or any wi-fi hotspot.

Then there's the cool factor with the touch screen and all. I can watch movies, look at pictures and all kinds of stuff, and of course listen to music. Basically I want to buy one, but I'm on the fence because of the price. But unless I can find a good reason to steer clear of them, I'm going to just buy it. That's why I'm here to see what ya'll think.

I have an iphone and I love it. The browser is a little slow, even on wifi, but it works and it is super fun to play with. Go for it!

Re: ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

What is the cost/memory differences of the Iphone and Ipod touch? I am sure there is a web forum for Iphone/Ipod touch by now, or check out consumer reports and play with the ones at a store for a while. 1 reason not to buy one, more money to spend on the car.

I dont think the video ability on those is something I would buy it for, anyone ever tried to watch movies on one? Might as well get a WalMart brand portable DVD player IMO. If you really want one though, go for it. My friend has one and she really likes it.

8GB-$299
16GB-$399
I was at the apple store and I think those are right.
I also have an Iphone and love the thing! Some things I dislike but overall love it.

here is my .2 cents. The Ipod touch is crap. 16Gb's wow thats not big at all. The freaking Ipod Classic has a 120Gb hard drive. And is maybe cheaper then the touch. At first Apple was going to call it the Widescreen. But they went with touch. But thats not the point. The point is the size that the HDD is. To me its not worth the price. But thats up to you.

I heard the 'Touch' is about $100 more then the Iphone... If thats true, why not just get the phone?

You might as well get an iPhone. It has everything but the phone, hell, I bet you could open it up and hack it to make it a phone for like a couple bucks.

Nope, different hardware inside. No camera or mic on the touch.

It has a lot of features that a standard ipod does not have; web browser, email, etc. It is really a different caliber of device than a standard ipod.

Re: ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

It really is a whole new standard for portable media. It sure as hell is not in the "mp3 player" category anymore, it just does so many other things that you just can't call it that.

Was a smart move on Apple's part by taking a piece of hardware they already had, toning it down a bit and releasing it with a smaller price tag. The iPhone isn't ALL that revolutionary in the phone market, but take away the phone and put it into the portable media market and it blows away the competition.

I'm confused how anyone could even believe a rumor like that?

Re: ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

I already have an mp3 player, so that's not the only thing I'm looking for. I want the music of course, but the big thing I want is the wifi. As well as the big screen and the cool factor. About the HDD comment, the touch doesn't have a hard drive, it uses flash memory, which has smaller capacity, but it has a ton of other advantages too.

Regardless it's too late to turn back now, I already ordered one. :)

Not to mention it takes about 7 seconds to disprove using the internet.

For anyone looking at purchasing any Apple product I highly recommend ww.macmall.com since their prices are some of the lowest around and you get free stuff after MIR's :)

I guess I don't see the purpose in researching something I could care less about, and in no way shape or form need in life.

My friend has one, and I don't know if it is because it was hacked, or this is just how they are, but the Ipone doesn't seem all that great to me. First off, it's way to fragile, especially with that big screen. Second, the internet was pretty damn slow I thought, and the mp3 player was very laggy. My friend actually gave up on using the mp3 part of the phone and went back to using his Ipod because it worked better. But I guess if you want to look cool because you spent a lot of money on a phone, be my guest.

Re: ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

Because he was asking if he should buy one and wanted feed-back. If what I heard was true, he might have wanted to think twice about getting a touch.

Also my friend and his two brothers all have the Iphones, and they all said the internet is slow, and the mp3 player is laggy. Which would also be something he might want to know before he tosses a bunch of money towards Apple.

I just don't think the Iphone lived up to all the hype it recieved, and is still getting.

Re: ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

I have always wondered about the giant screens on these new media players. How common is cracking on them?

ABV is right. Flash memory has huge advantages compared to hard drives. It's less fragile, uses less power, is smaller, etc... Once 40GB+ sizes are available at a reasonable price hard drive portable players are going to be junk comparitively. Until then I can't justify spending big money for an 8 gig player.

ABV 11-01-2007 01:02 PM

Re: ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

I decided to spend an extra 100 for the 16gb version. I currently have an 8gb sandisk player and that holds more than enough for a week long vacation. I figure with the extra 8 gb on the touch I can hold a few movies or shows. I won't be able to hold everything I have, but more than enough for what I need.

Everyone I know who has an Iphone was too affraid to walk out of the store without it in a hard case. But I'd guess it would be pretty easy to screw them up considering they are touch screen... Plus I've heard they charge something like $300 to fix the broken screen, and it wont be covered under insurance.

Dude, stop this nonsense! I have had an iphone since they came out. Zero scratches, I've even dropped the thing once or twice and its fine. They are really marvelous little devices in that they are quite robust. Apple has learned from the original nano that people use the crap out of these things and they need to be super scratch resistant. The screen/touchscreen on the iphone and ipod touch is made from tempered glass, it does not scratch very easy. I certainly don't beat on the thing but I don't treat it like a delicate piece of crystal. I'm sure it is expensive to replace the screen but they are quite tough!

Re: ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

Here, this is a quote off EverythingIphone.com...

My iphone fell when i was trying to put it in my pocket, (about 3ft from the ground) and when i picked it up, the screen was completly wrecked. I wanted to throw up but at least it still worked. Well as the days went by, the part of the screen that unlocks the phone stopped working.....i could get it to unlock but only after like 60 tries. The second row of keys on the keyboard didnt work AT ALL. So no texting, no web surfing, no phone contacts. Well at least I could still make calls. Bam 1 week later, the screen doesnt function at all, and I am left with a 600 dollar brick.

I called apple care the day after it fell while it was still functional. I spoke with 3 different people. 1 told me the only thing i could do was buy a whole new phone....screw that. The other two told me it would cost 250 dollars to repair. My local apple store told me the same thing. I dont have 250 dollars to spare, and would really like a new phone. How the hell did you and the other guys pull this off. PLEASE HELP I AM IN iPHONE HELL.

Re: ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

My iPhone Touchscreen broke - iPhone sent away for 3 days about.

So I go to use my email, and I can't get into the inbox.
I thought email was messed up, but it turns out, a line/section of my touchscreen isn't working.

Figures, cause I have a 7 series screen.

I go to apple store with all my box, receipt etc..I've had it for 1 month.
The apple genius bar tech tells me that normally they give loaner phones while mine is being sent out for repair. She says that no loaner phones left. I'm like great.

I still have my Sony Ericsson k790a and sim card pops right in, so I can use that. So now I'm waiting 3 business days for them to ship it to my house.

I tell my friend, and he says he's on his 3rd iPhone cause he keeps dropping it. Meanwhile mine malfunctions and they make me send it out?
That is so whack. What if I didn't have a backup cell phone?

So unfair, they should have just gave me a new 8GB right there on the spot since mine wasn't dropped, had screen protector on it, and all.

Re: ipod Touch - Can anyone give me a reason not to buy this?

I talked to 5 different reps. at Apple Care Center. 4 of 5 told me to cough up 220-250 dollars. 1 person told me it was covered by my warranty, that was the person I asked to send me the box. I told every person the same story. It was my fault (I dropped it) but, I wanted to know if it was covered by warranty.

happened to me, but you might search around here for details about what happened to my situation (which apple finally took care of yesterday!).

long story short, you will be paying for the repair as accidental damage is not covered (my quote was $275). i got lucky because some repair tech slipped the wrong repair bill thingy into my box and i called apple on their mistake.

It's gonna cost me 215.00 to repair! I don't expect them to repair it for free. But I can't believe that they have to charge 215.00 for a piece of optical glass. This is the first phone I have ever dropped. Couldn't come at a worse time. Not asking for pity but I was layed off from work last night and I dropped it in the parking lot on my last night. Thanks to the posters who tried to help and offered me advice.

By now I think you have completely contradicted this statement.

Shit breaks if you aren't careful with it... a normal iPod can break from a 3 foot fall if it lands in an awkward position, and is probably MORE likely to break being it has a HDD vs SS.

Bottom line is just be careful with your shit.

I havent heard a great deal of good about the iPhone either other than its so fun to play with. My old roommate was the first to get the iPhone at MOA and hes already had to send it in twice and he worships his Apple stuff. After seeing all the BS hes gone through with his Mac Book and iPhone I wont ever buy anything from them besides first or second generation Nano's because they are cheap to replace when they break.

Ok first off I did not know the touch was Flash memory. I stand corrected on that.

But funny how you say about the old Ipods. I right now have a 40gb 4g Click wheel paper weight. Because of this HDD problem. 100 dollars will fix it. But I do not have the cash for it. Oh and the damn thing is scratched up too. But after I fix it...I wont drop it again ... I am buying a hard case for it.

I bought the 16g touch tonight and it didnt work out of the box.

Took it back and exchanged it and all is good now. Pretty nifty little thing. My first ipod and really first mp3 player for that matter.

I would say that the internet is almost as fast as my laptop and it is really easy to use.

Now to upload a shit load of CDs so I can use the thing.

If youre worried about durability Ive got an iphone and I do NOT baby it, I use it just like I would any of my other phones and I'd rather get the most use out of it and just buy a new one if I break it instead spending more time babying it than using it. So far Ive dropped it from about 3-4 ft quite regularly since I knock it off the counters at my work all the time, and today I dropped it pretty far down a deep vent but I managed to fish it out and it was unscathed except maybe for a scuff or two :)
