Fire!!!!

Well, i was stupid.
I put my 50 trim back on so i could go to MOD (mitsubishi Owners Day) and i made a huge mistake with the oil feed line, I had one barbed nipple on the turbo side, and a barbed on the feed line. So i took a small peice of fuel line and clamped each side. Well Tonight i went out to our local meet and my buddy with the true silvia showed up. We got a couple races set up and decided to go to the spot and do a couple runs. On the way to the spot me and the silvia decide to make a run. After the run i see a ton of smoke coming inside the car and out the back of the car. I was thinking it was the head gasket so i slowly pull over to the side of the road. My roomate who was in the car with me yells "GET OUT! your cars on fire" I jump out and see the fire in the engine bay and out the bottom of the car. Im running around frantically trying to put it out but none of us had a fire exstinguisher. the cops were on their way. The cop tells me to open the hood and sprays the fire out. I got it towed to the house... and here is the aftermath.... |
Re: Fire!!!!
"Now me and the mad scientist have to rebuild it!"
oh man, that sux! but at least its only medium well done instead of well done! luckally many of the things will wash off but all the plastic and wiring will be a bitch. Can you claim something like that on insurance, or will you have to fix it on your own? if it wasn't for bad luck you wouldn't have any luck at all with that car! look at the bright side... you still can hold a bud in your hands! -E |
Re: Fire!!!!
Damn That sux and you just got done pretting it all up. Atleast it wasn't worse
|
Re: Fire!!!!
Looks salvageable? Lots of soot everywhere, but did you melt the wiring harness or anything?
|
Re: Fire!!!!
Sorry to hear about this Tom :( At least your cuddly friend Bud came to the rescue.
You've had some pretty nasty luck with DSM's. |
Re: Fire!!!!
That's pretty gay.
Something something brownman. |
Re: Fire!!!!
Yea that really sucks... get out of dsms!! lol
|
Re: Fire!!!!
Power wash the engine bay and see what looks alright. Looks just like a lot of soot.
|
Re: Fire!!!!
Congrats on being honest and admitting fault... It does make us all say WTF TOM, sorry to hear that though good luck.
|
Re: Fire!!!!
To be honest, I'm sorry it happened. But it's like the ytmnd of the turbo rotaries. 60% of the time, they work.. every time.
|
Re: Fire!!!!
thanks guys.
Looking at the damage some more, it does look like mostly the fire exstingwisher (sp). The fire was mostly contained in the front right by the turbo, the two fans are completly melted, a couple hoses are melted, and the coolent resivoir was melted and the hoods paint melted. but other then that most of it just wipes off. Ill take a couple cans of degreaser and a power washer to it maybe tonight and see if there is any more damage. |
Re: Fire!!!!
Careful not to get your CAS too wet; I wrecked one with water once.
|
Re: Fire!!!!
that sucks
good luck with it |
Re: Fire!!!!
Damn Tom, that sucks. Sorry to hear.
|
Re: Fire!!!!
that FPR still looks good
|
Re: Fire!!!!
The BOV does too...hahaha
No no its not funny. Sorry to hear that. Atleast the fire did not get to a fuel line. But like you said does not look that bad. Good luck with it Tom hope a few things need to be replaced. |
Re: Fire!!!!
The reason those two things look untouched, is because i wiped them off. The guage on the fpr looked liek it was really charred as well as the bov, but after wiping them off they looked brand new. same with the headlights.
After the fire was put out and the car was back home we joked about it. As long as me and my roomate are in one peice and the car is in under 5 peices, then it was an OK night. |
Re: Fire!!!!
So was it your oil return rigging that caused the fire I'm assuming? Or what was it?
Sorry to hear though man, what a bummer. |
Re: Fire!!!!
damn man that sucks. I hope you can get her back and running soon! Good luck!

Re: Fire!!!!
I had the same thing happen although my rubber oil line melted, luckily I had a fire extinguisher in the car. It could have gotten very bad.
In a different car, I had the center bottom stud that holds the exhaust manifold on fall off. There is an oil port behind it where the oil from the head drains back into the block and it started dumping out igniting on the turbo housing. That was on my 21st b-day... What a happy day that was 100 miles from home. |
Re: Fire!!!!
Damn, that sucks alot. I hope nothing is too messed up and it's repairable.
|
Re: Fire!!!!
Yeah for once I feel bad for you I hope damage is limited to hoses and plastic nothing to mechanical and if so be its the wiring harness ugh good luck i'm pretty sure we've all been there and done a wiring harness and don't want to again.
How long was it on fire? You hang out with to many people that are afraid to whip it out and piss on the thing or what? |
Re: Fire!!!!
It was only on fire for a couple minutes maybe 10 at the most. Enought to completly melt the A/C fan and melt the fan blades off of the other radiator fan. (metal one)
I would have whipped it out but at first we thought it was a gas fire being that there were drops of fire going onto the ground. One of my friends wanted to yell out "NAWSSSS!!!!" |
Re: Fire!!!!
He should have, and then the F&F saga would have been complete, spilner.
|
Re: Fire!!!!
Jesus Tom, I commend you for manning up to your screw up but Jesus!?!?
Glad you and your buddy didn't get hurt. This reminds me of the LSE dyno day from a year or so ago where the guy with the red 1g pulls up hops out of his car and says "Hi, my car is on fire" we laughed and then realized he was serious. Similar sort of issue, leaking oil feed line. |

:score008: Sorry to see your car caught fire Tom, hopefully most of it is okay. Someone should make a sweet owned pic of that 3rd one you posted, it would be tradition with the random pics of the old schoolers doing dumb stuff/bad situations. You'll look back on this and laugh later, glad you are fine. A simple caption of "This is why I'm hot" would do wonders for that pic. |

Re: Fire!!!!
Last year at Fun Ford Weekend in Dallas some guys were having fuel line issues with a Cobra. After thinking they had fixed the leak they left the Texas Motorplex and went out on the highway to make a couple of quick pulls to check it out. While in the middle of a high speed pull the fuel line spewed fuel all over the engine compartment and the car burst into flames. Before they could get the car stopped the fire had engulfed the car. The driver and the passenger didn't make it.
When dealing with flamable fluids in your car, don't cut corners. Always, and I mean ALWAYS keep an extinguisher with you. They're ~$10-15 bucks and it could save your car, or your life. You were lucky, count your blessings. Oh yeah, you gotz to be a stuuuuupid mother fucker to use rubber hose to feed a turbo. :) |
Re: Fire!!!!
Wow sorry to see that happen right after you were just about done. Hopefully the turbo is ok along with the other big stuff.

I and a lot of the people i hang out with used to think it was rice to have a fire extinguisher in the car, pretty much every one of my friends went out and bought one the day after this happened. yeah i was pretty stupid, it wasnt mainly because i used a rubber hose to to the oil feed line, but more-so that i didnt yank hard on the line to make sure it was secure. I was going to have my girl friend get in a bikini and pose in front of the car and put the same "This is why im hot" caption, but shes a little shy. |
Re: Fire!!!!
The rubber fuel line is where you went wrong. Whether it was tight enough or not wouldn't have made a difference. Rubber fuel line can't take the heat or pressure it encountered on the turbo oil feed.

That cobra driver in texas should have turned off the car to shut off the fuel pump(s). |

|
Re: Fire!!!!
Shitty!!!! Sorry to hear, Hopefully not to bad, and you can rebuild her better, stronger, Faster. But to put it in perspetive you convinced me to get a fire extinguisher, cause if that happend to me I would have had a case or two of whats in your hands, and then cry like a girl.
|
Re: Fire!!!!
Have you dealt any with insurance so far on this? I'm sure you saved reciepts and could have atleast made a call to you insurance company to see what they can do for ya.
