It sucks that the LHC isn't going online until next year. I was excited to see them create a black hole on earth.

Scrmegl 06-26-2007 11:08 AM

Re: The GRID!

Well the LHC may not be ready but we do have Antimatter now in the form of AntiHydron. Even if it isn't stable and blows up as soon as they make it. Make enough and the black hole on earth could be sooner than next year.

Seems as if we've become the nerds of the nerds here. :)

LHC = Large Hadron Collider
27km (17 miles) in circumference and ranges from 50 to 150 meters underground.

I see your LHC and raise you an AD (Anitiproton Decelerator):

Turbine Theory and Ideal Gas law and how it is applied to turbochargers or Subatomic particle acceleration/deaccelartion; both are fun.

Re: The GRID!

That sounds sweet. So when are we going to have the cyborg war? Or is it the age were hackers take over that huge data bank. This is kinda scary...I think I should build a rail gun!

Re: The GRID!

The rail gun is always the answer to domineering technology. Terminator is a perfect example. LOL

The builders of the world's biggest particle collider (LHC) are being sued in federal court over fears that the experiment might create globe-gobbling black holes or never-before-seen strains of matter that would destroy the planet.

Some doom sayers are scared of such notions as:

Runaway black holes
Strangelets
Magnetic Monopolies

I actually feel sorry for the lawyers on this case.

^crazyness, Railguns on the other hand are nuts too. The navy is suppose to be designing some crazy rail gun, ill search for the article.

Which will never see the light of day in our lifetime because of the massive amount of electrical power required, currently 3 million amps at 32 megajoules. They want to build one twice the size, 64 megajoules, 6 million amps. If they do find a way to power it on a destroyer then their next problem will be cooling it since it will literally melt when fired at the 6 rounds per minute rate which they are wanting.

Its actually kinda scary reading that. Hell what if they do turn that shit on and the world evaporates. We will never know when it actually does turn on, because im sure it will be classified.
What if one of the scientists miscalculated, or cut a corner, or they paid off the inspectors, or a million other concerns?
Do you really need to create one that big, or could you maybe have gotten by with creating just a regular sized one. Seriously that thing is massive.

We will know. There are too many universities, laboratories, etc. around the world that will be using it for research to not talk about it. If it is such a big secret then why do we know about it already and have so much information about it?

Re: The GRID!

I cant wait to hear about the LHC going wrong and being the biggest waste of money ever! Or hear nothing at all and turning into a huge black hole... that would be kinda funny too.

But I will not hatch, I will not hatch.
For I hear all the talk of pollution and war

So I'm staying in here where it's safe and it's warm,
And I WILL NOT HATCH

Re: The GRID!

Im just sayin, yes it would be awesome to build that and find out great things about the big bang and other stuff, but is it really worth risking the lives of over 6 Billion people (http://www.ibiblio.org/lunarbin/worldpop). Thats worse then Saddam Insane could ever kill. Im surprized George Bush hasnt tried to go to war with these guys, but that would mean he would actually find a WMD.

:scared: I was just jiving ya a bit before. Now I mean it. lol

Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood. -M.C.

If we really let fear lead our lives like that modern medicine and technology would never be. We once thought we'd fall off the planet if we went too far.

If you knew anything about science you'd understand that they can't really create anything on earth that would do such things. Leave it to the religious community to scare people out of believing in science and instead believe in religion... Creation vs. evolution all over again.

Good ol Kennedy space center... Kinda a fun tour but you dont get to really see anything up close. Just a model of the Apollo rocket which is ginormous. I think it was somthing like 97% of the mass of the rocket was fuel, the remaining 3% was for the living space and equipment.

Here is an updated article on the start of The Grid set to turn fully on when the LHC goes online.

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,347212,00.html

"At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds."

This video brings it all together and puts it in perspective for everyone.
As we strive to learn more about the universe around us some things more obvious beg to be understood.
