Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
Alright I got some aftermarket cam gears for a 2.0. How do I set them up for a 2.4l? I know with the stock ones you are saposed to remark the cam gears. Do I do that with aftermarket ones too? Anyone got a set of 2.4 gears that I could use to mark mine? Any help would be GREAT!

Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
Just set them both up 1/2 tooth off.

Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
It's a 4-4.5 deg difference on each cam timing depending on deck and head surfacing. And it could be retarded or advanced, depending on how you line them up. Do yourself a favor and degree them in correctly, then remark the indicator notch on the gear.

Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
So one is 4-4.5 advanced and the other is 4-4.5retarded? which is which?

Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
So I did a quick paint drawing. "A" is stock, and from what Im reading here it can be either "B" or "C", Is that correct?

The problem is that they can also line up like this. See the problem? It could line up 1/2 tooth in either direction. Your cam timing is still off. Trust me, 4-5 deg of cam timing can make a big difference in spool up, low and upper end power. Depending on the cams and engine, you could run the risk of valve to piston contact.

Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
I didn't have time to degree mine in when I built it so I just bought some stock 2.4 Galant gears til I get around to doing it right, they're cheap.
|
Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
OK, Im getting confused. I was told that all you would have to do is take your stock cam gears to someone with 2.4 cam gears and you line up the dowels and make a mark on the 2.0 cams where the 2.4 mark is at. Is this incorrect?
So if that is correct couldnt I take my aftermarket cams for a 2.0 to someone with cams from a 2.4 and match them up and make a mark on the aftermarket cams are where the mark is on the 2.4l cams? |

Thats EXACTLY what I needed, thank you!!!!

Can anyone confirm that that is the correct way of doing it? |

That is a "get by" way of doing it, but your cams will not be timed correctly. Both cams will be 4.5-5 deg off, in either direction. Either degree them in and remark them or buy some 2.4L gears. |
Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
Pardon my iggnorance. But in that second drawing you posted vicious, when the cams are spinning that line will meet in the middle and be directly accross from another in rotation. So how does it make a difference if you line them up perfectly accross when they aren't in motion?
|
Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
Because when they do line up correctly, they will each be 4.5-5 deg out of time with the crankshaft. What you are missing is the reason why it's different. The timing belt for the 2.4L has one (1) extra tooth on it to make up for the higher deck the 2.4L has. Not two (2) extra teeth. Two extra teeth would make it easy and they would line up correctly. But you are having to split the difference of one tooth. So depending on which side of that one tooth you line it up on will make the difference. Now do you get it?

Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
Wow putting it into those words I understand 100% what you mean.
So hopefully blageo can get this and do it right and get that car on the road. Blageo as excited as you are you have a large amount of money and time into your car remain patient as badly as you want to go out and rip on that thing DO IT RIGHT DO IT ONCE |
Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
Glad I could help clear this up for you guys.

Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
I still dont get it. Here is what im thinking and tell my why im wrong or whatnot.
Lets say I go out and buy 2.4 cams and hold them up to the 2.0 cams. What is the difference? I was under the impression that the timing marks are off/different between the 2. because to my understanding the 2.4 cam gears have the same amount of teeth(correct?). So if thats the case I could put the 2.0 gears on top the 2.4 gears and see where the marks line up and draw a line on the 2.0 cams to match where the line on the 2.4 cams are. Thus making my 2.0 cams the same as the 2.4 cams. So then I put my 2.0 cams back on and line the marks up that I made and that would make the engine have the correct timing for a 2.4l. By reading this tell me what im misunderstanding. I realize what you are saying and I get it but I dont get why im wrong. |

OK, here we go. Yes you are moving the marks, but you are not moving the cam dowels to the correct position. So when you move the mark and install the belt, the gears/marks will "look" ok, but the cams are still out of time as compared to straight up. If what you suggest is that easy, Mitsu would have made one (1) set of gears for both engines with dual marks (i.e. one mark for the 2.0L and one mark for the 2.4L). BUT THEY DIDN"T. Trust me on this, I degreed my cams in my 2.4L on my 2.0L Fidanza adjustable gears and they were 4.5-5 deg off. The only way to have them installed correctly is to degree them in on adjustable gears and then remark the adjustable gears, or find/buy at set of 2.4L gears. GET NOW? :deadhorse: |
Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
Alright, I get it now. I guess I was not thinking about the dowels and the camshafts themselves(I was just looking/thinking about the gears). Thank you for clearing that up!

You're welcome. :ring:

Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
So I bit the bullet and bought new 2.4 gears.
Now I put the belt on and the crank and oil gears dont line up. What do I do? they either line up before or after the mark never right one http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/500/000_0094.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/500/000_0092.JPG http://www.dsmstyle.com/photopost/data/500/000_0093.JPG |
Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
Well for one thing, your crank is not exactly pointing at the mark. Line it up correctly and see if everything comes up straight.
Secondly, put the tensioner in place to remove the slack in the belt. You can't trust anything with slack in the belt. |
Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
If I line up the mark on the crank the cams dont line up. I put tension on the belt with one hand and had no slack and this is where the marks lined up.(i just did it quick to see if they lined up). But when I get home from work I will put the tensioner on and check it agian.
|
Re: Setting Up Cam Gears For A 2.4L
I can guarantee you that the tensioner will put a lot more pressure on that belt then your hand will.
By looking at the pics I'll take a guess and say the cams are one tooth retarted compared to the crank. Crank and oil pump look OK, just slightly off the mark. Are you running balance shafts? If not, the oil pump timing will not matter. |
