Anyone? Anyone?

Yes, that's the sound of my timing belt snapping and wiping out some valves. I was on my way to lunch today and got to hear that lovely sound come from my engine bay. So if anyone has a good head laying around for a 1g, I need one. Soon is better than later.

So I will probably be driving the CRX for a week or two. Please take pity on me in my hour of need. :headache: :headache:

All I have to say is :dsmrule: !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Jana 02-06-2004 06:58 PM

That's sucky!!!! I'm sorry to hear that :(

SuperSleeper 02-06-2004 06:59 PM

That sucks man--sorry to hear it. I'll let you know if I stumble upon any heads.

Jakey 02-06-2004 07:17 PM

Damn Erik, sorry to hear that, I'll keep my eyes open for ya. I know there is a guy up in Wisconsin selling a '93 or '94 rebuilt head on the Trader. If I can find the ad I'll post it up for ya.

EDIT- Looky

ACRucrazy 02-06-2004 07:20 PM

That sux!
Sorry to hear, was that the same head that was rebuilt a few years ago for the very same reason?

AJ 02-06-2004 07:25 PM

Shitty! Seems heads are becoming a needed iten these past few weeks. That fucking blows for ya though.

MATCHBX 02-06-2004 07:36 PM

Yep. That's the same head. That's why I'm thinking about getting a different one.

I forgot, which is better 1g or 2g? What year is the best to look for?

Thanks guys.

fmicmatt 02-06-2004 07:43 PM

I have a head lying in my garage.......It was off a overheated/blown headgasekt 1G. I don't know if its warped. If it needs a rebuild, you might as well use yours. I can have it checked for warpage if your serious. $220(If its good) Let me know.

niterydr 02-06-2004 08:57 PM

1g 7 bolts have better cooling passages, 1g 6 bolts have good flow stock, like 1g 7 bolts do, 2g's you can hog out more if you are going 'all out'.

CVD 02-06-2004 10:04 PM

Was that your car on hwy 13?

Not a good day for DSMs. Saw a lot broken down today.

santa 02-06-2004 11:14 PM

man I feel your pain my car is still sitting. Everything is finally coming together I'm currently in the process of doing a valve job on my head and once thats done its time to put everything back together. Good luck with your car.. look here.....> http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAP...&category=33617

MATCHBX 02-06-2004 11:18 PM

Yeah I was looking at that one.

Yep. It got a whole block away from work when it happened. started to accelerate and POW!!! It sat on 13 from 12:30pm until 6pm. AAA is awesome though!!!! I am so glad I got it. DSM's should come with a lifetime membership!!! I shouldn't say that though. This ones been pretty good to me for the amount of abuse it's been thru.

MATCHBX 02-06-2004 11:58 PM

I appreciate that. I might ask for help later on. We're not sure how long it will take to get all the parts and stuff.

santa 02-07-2004 12:16 AM

yeah waiting on parts is the worse ever I got my head studs tonight though wich was awsome!!1 Just let me know likeI said I'm down for helpin out if I can

Nash 02-07-2004 02:51 AM

Damn that sucks! Also the 1G 6 bolt heads have bigger holes for the head studs.

MATCHBX 02-07-2004 03:10 PM

Well, I got a head. It cost me a whopping $38. We went to U Pull R Parts and found one on a 90 GST. Belt was in good condition so we yanked the head. It appears to have no bent valves but I'm going to take it apart and clean it to make sure. I looked around and they have about 10 1g's out there. about 9 out of the ten are 90-91's. There are about 5-6 talons, 2-3 eclipses and one laser. About 4 of the talons were awd. I looked and all of them had A/C so no under the dash boxes. I did however find a perfect hatch cover and a single din radio bezel. Sorry Andy, no ecu's. They have most of the color combos out there as well. The eclipse I got the head from was blue (I know Mike, this head will be more powerful). Some are picked over pretty well but the talons were mostly intact. Almost all had spoilers on them. The blue eclipse had the 3 piece mitsu spoiler like the talon's but it doesn't extend all the way forward. There were a few others like that as well. Most taillights were intact in good condition. If anyone wants anything from them, you should get out there real soon. There's a lot of snow there but it's not too bad. Just dress warm.

Also. I looked at the car this morning and the timing belt didn't break and there are no teeth missing that I can see. It has something on the backside of it that looks like it rubbed onto something. I think it just jumped. I'm going to probably yank the head anyways and do it all right so I know everything is ok.

AJ 02-07-2004 03:19 PM

$38 bucks. hot damn! Did you see what the OD had on it for miles?

A//// Guy 02-07-2004 03:19 PM

The same thing happened to me. The belt didnt break but the engine started knocking because the TB skipped 3-4 teeth. I would check and make sure there is actual damage on the inside of the engine with Mikes boroscope and then if it looks bad replace it but my engine knocked a little but no damage came out of it. So I just redid a new Tbelt and other crap and started right up.

MATCHBX 02-07-2004 03:25 PM

The car had 164,000 on the odo. The car was unmodded and in really decent shape. The block looked good as well. Just some oil from a leaky valve cover gasket. The valve cover had a small crack in it, otherwise I would've nabbed it too. There was one talon out there that still had it's smic attached. I was going to grab it but decided not to.

As for looking at it with the boroscope, I had thought about that but I don't want to go thru the work of replacing the belts only to find out the head was bad. I just want to make sure everything is good. Plus I'm thinking about doing a little port-matching and such while I have.

MATCHBX 02-07-2004 03:28 PM

The head has a 30-day money back warrantee on it as well.

AJ 02-07-2004 04:44 PM

Damn, I wonder what they want for the motor.

fmicmatt 02-07-2004 05:52 PM

$38.00.............Sweet deal! Good diggin', now I know who to call for parts. Have fun with the head swap.

MATCHBX 02-07-2004 08:33 PM

I think it's a $150 for a complete engine. Or you could go there on the day they have the pull-a-thon. Whatever you can carry for $29.95. People have carried out engines or trannies or doors or whatever they could and got it all for $29.95.

I think it's $75 for just a short block.
It's $12 for an intake.

Here's a link to their price list if you want to see what they charge.

npaulseth 02-07-2004 10:57 PM

Holy Sheet!!!! Where is this place? Did the other turbo DSM's have heads on them? Thanks man for the info, I'm in desperate need of a head. Noah

They are in Rosemount at the intersection of hwy 3 and county rd 46.

I think so. One or two of them had snapped timing belts though. It's worth a look though.

Go to their website that I listed above for better directions.

Yeah I've been there before too but when I was there, there were no dsm's there hmm its been a while since I've been there. Well if you need that head to look like its brand new get ahold of my this week avter you get the valves out and at school we have a dishwasher for parts...that thing is a god i swear!! my head looks like its brand new which is a big improvment from what it was before! pm me or im on aim all the time mostly santacruzz1822 let me know man.

MATCHBX 02-08-2004 06:29 PM

I appreciate the offer but we have a hot washer at work that is built for engines. Plus I have a lap table at my disposal that I can resurface the head with.

Normally when i go in there they have one or two dsm's. This time they had a shitload. Also, usually they are non-turbo's where as this time they had a bunch of awd turbo's (of course the turbo's were the first things robbed off of them). They are looking for help right now. Someone from here should get a job up there so we know when a dsm is going to hit the ground out there.

the dishwasher at school its a "hot" dishwasher. I believe the brand name is Cuda? idk but yeah I was just offering. sounds like you have it all taken care of... oh btw what do you do when you resurface your head? Im thinking block sand it and drop a straight edge on it or what? just wondering?

npaulseth 02-08-2004 07:17 PM

I went there today. The only turbo DSM I saw there with a head was a pretty picked over talon. It still had the 3-bolt read and everything. Tranny was gone. There was snow inside the head, and covering it, so I just said fuck it and am buying some guys head out in Eau Claire for like $50. Next time I go there, hopefully in a couple weeks, I'm picking up a set of GSX rims/tires. Anyone else need anything. I pulled off a TB jsut for fun.

MATCHBX 02-08-2004 07:47 PM

Did you go back to the chrysler line? There were a bunch of talons back there. Alot of them have snow in them because of the recent storm. Mine luckily had the valve cover still on it.

john 02-09-2004 10:17 AM

WTF, taillights are $1 per inch? Anyone bought dsm tail lights from them? How do them measure. I may get a set and spray tint them.

MATCHBX 02-18-2004 07:42 PM

Just for an update, I finally had a chance to tear into the car. Turns out the balance shaft belt snapped and caused the timing to jump. It also smashed up the timing cover. The cam gears are about 1/3rd off from what they are supposed be at. Tomorrow nite I'm going to try to reset the timing and see if it starts. Then we will see if the valves got hit.

A//// Guy 02-18-2004 09:14 PM

That will do er. How many teeth did it skip? Past like 3-5 Im sure it hit, just depends how hard.

npaulseth 02-18-2004 09:16 PM

Actually Shane said that my timing belt didn't skip. My CAS was 180* backwards. Who ever did the engine rebuild realy fuxored up on that.

Shane@DBPerformance 02-18-2004 10:07 PM

The CAS isn't 180 backwards, it's just turned as far as you can go clockwise, so it was probably running way way too much timing, which it's good.

npaulseth 02-18-2004 10:09 PM

Ohhh, I totally misunderstood you then. Well, the whole knock thing isn't good though.

MATCHBX 03-01-2004 08:53 PM

Another update. Got the head off tonite. I bent all the intake valves and the screwed up the intake cam when the rockers fell off of their perches. Luckily the exhaust valves were fine. I have the parts needed for one good head now so I'm going start getting things back together. I picked up the head gasket set yesterday. Hopefully this will only take a short while to get it back together.

I miss my car!!!!! I want to drive my car again!!!! :rally: :3gears:

Jana 03-03-2004 08:13 PM

Lucky you have all the parts...that's awesome!! :D

MATCHBX 03-03-2004 10:13 PM

I actually split the roller part of one of the rockers. I showed the people that came over to the last poker party. The nice thing is I have about 30 of them to choose from now.

I finished cleaning the head tonite and am taking it to the machine shop tomorrow. The intake valves from the junkyard head are good so I'm going to have them regrind the valves and seats for the intake. I'm going to have them look at the exhaust seats and valves and see what they think. More than likely they will be replaced along with the guides. After that things are gong to be port matched and put back on the car. Hopefully I will have it running before next weekend (not this weekend obviously).
