Fuel System Upgrade

This isn't a big project, but I thought a few people might be interested. I am upgrading my fuel system to a fuel cell with SS lines. I will be switching to E85 this year and I was running out of fuel pump last year, so it was a good time to upgrade. I am going to attempt to run a single Bosch -044 pump. -8 AN lines from the cell to the pump, then -6 AN out of the pump and all the way back. That is a 16 gallon cell with foam in it, -8 fittings. Click on the picture for a hi-res version.

Parts in order, fuel cell, -8 line, Magnaflow 25 micron filter, -8 line, Bosch 044 pump, -6 line, Golan 10 micron filter, fuel rail, Aeromotive pressure regulator, -6 back to the fuel cell.

Here is the flow chart for the pump. It tops out at about 300 l/hr and holds pressure very well.

looks good. Are you runnign 1600cc or 2 sets of smaller ones controled with the AEM?

I plan on running 1600's if someone would buy my 950's!

Run both.

I don't think I need 2550cc's of fuel :D

Wow Jet looking great. Hope the switch will help ya out.

Plan for the future. Two years ago we would've both laughed at using 1600's. I'm just trying to figure out what combo of injectors to run myself. I've got 1600's, 720's and 450's, and eight injector bungs. Hmmmmm.

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

Buy Jet's 950's, and use your 720's, and you'll have your 1600cc's worth of fuel without dealing with the down falls of the 1600cc injectors! Then sell off the 1600's since they're worth a good penny now a days.

Looks good Jet. I plan on running the same pump once I run out of fuel. They are supposed to flow a ton!

Looks good, hopefully the single Bosch will be enough.

There's no downfalls to the 1600's when you've got an EMS. Besides that I don't want to limit myself to *just* 1600cc's total, my calculations show I'll need more than that. :spin:

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

It will be really easy to add another 044 if I need to. I am also about done with mods on my car, it is getting to be rediculous on the street. This switch to E85, intake manifold and the bigger FMIC I have here with 3" piping will be about it. I may go to a slightly bigger turbo later (4088R), but nothing huge. I don't see it going much over 550 awhp.

Alright, got the gas tank and injectors out tonight! I was expecting the tank to be heavier than it is. I will finish emptying it tomorrow and do a comparrison between the weight of the fuel cell and stock tank.

Why did you decide to reduce your line size feeding into the FPR, FPR port size availability?

JET 04-25-2007 02:07 PM

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

A -6 is already a lot bigger than the stock lines, so it should flow plenty. My FPR and fuel rail were already set up for -6 also.

Here are some pics from the final result. I will try to get a better pic of the bracket to hold up the fuel cell when I get the car back in the air, it turned out pretty sweet! Click on the pic's to see a larger version.

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

The car will be running once I get a new 90* -6 fitting. I got a cheap summit one and the damn thing stripped out when I tried to tighten it when it was leaking. I'll grab one tomorrow, then it should be ready to rock! I'll have to take one more pic from the back, it doesn't hang down any lower than the stock tank and you can just see the 2 blue fittings from the back :D

Thanks guys!

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

Did you cut the hump down and make a filler door in the trunk then? Looks good, I might have to pony up for a cell.

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

the 044 pump in some Honda application testing was only able to support 50-75whp more then a sinlge Walbro 255.

If your going threw all the hassle of sumping or putting a cell in why not just get a external pump and be done?

I dont think the single 044 pump will be enough and I dont think he thinks so either. I think he mentioned it in this thread that he was ready for another another one if need be.

JET 04-30-2007 12:34 AM

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

The 044 is an external pump and I will put in a 2nd if I need to. I don't plan on going with a monstrous setup, so I am not real worried about it. My next focus is going to be making the car more streetable again.

So when you say the 044 is an external pump does that mean you have another one? I thought you went with a cell and the single pump?

I have a buddy feeding a 044 with a in tank 255 and I hope it is enough. Bring on that E85 :)

JET 04-30-2007 12:51 AM

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

My 044 is an external pump, and it is just that pump, there is no in-tank pump.

rst95eclipse 04-30-2007 01:03 AM

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

You can run the Bosch 044 intank, but everyone uses it as an external.

Jet: If/when you run 2, where will you install the second? Right at the tank?

JET 04-30-2007 01:10 AM

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

I will run them parallel, that gives the best performance gain. I will reroute the return line towards the front of the tank to get the warmer gas farther from the outlets. I will use the 2nd outlet on the cell for the 2nd pump, I am now using it for the return line.

rst95eclipse 04-30-2007 02:17 AM

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

Will you run one of those distribution blocks (2 into 1)? I've been looking at doing the same with mine in the future. The only thing that really gets me thinking is one might overtake the other (be it an air pocket, etc) and kill it. I'm sure it's been done before, but I haven't researched the issue. Install looks good.

Use a nitrous Y in reverse, it gives a smoother transition.

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

Well, I got the car started and idling well. I was in the engine bay and heard a low whooshing noise. I start checking out piping and found that my Spearco FMIC has a 10" long weld blown out! This would explain why it was running like crap for the last dyno day!! Maybe I can get to that this weekend and get it welded up.

I would say send it back but I am sure you would be better off just welding yourself. Where did it blow out?

JET 04-30-2007 04:41 PM

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

It blew out on the bottom end tank on the engine side, right in the middle.

Re: Fuel System Upgrade

If your IC cracked once I would re-weld all the joints on the end tanks that are longer then a few inches, or it will crack again. It takes a long time to grind out the welds and clean everything up to lay down a new good weld. Did you get your Tig torch cables fixed?

Yeah, I was planning on redoing all 4 welds that are pretty long. No point in having to take it off again! My TIG is up and running again.

I thought I might get a comment about the blow it up part :D
