My new computer

I will get pics up later but I built a new computer from newegg. Asus M2N-SLI Deluxe mob, AM2 socket, AMD Athlon x2 3600+ dual core oem, 2 gigs of ram, big cpu cooler, BFG 7900gs oc graphics card(SLI ready), 80 gig SATA hard drive, 2 cd/burner drives, coolmaster case, 460watt power supply. I had one of Ryans friends look it over after I built it and he liked the stuff, minus the power supply o well. I can not wait to play some cool pc games on it, CODUO on the FK server is what I will try tomorrow. It 3d bench marks at 17,231
http://service.futuremark.com/orb/re...=0&UID=8629753
Future mods would be over clocking the processor and memory, then run SLI with another 7900gs, bigger power supply, but I am happy with it for now. Cost was about $840 after shipping and stuff.

What does something like that cost these days? I haven't bought a desktop(specially a gaming machine)in a long time.

It depends on what you want to put into it. I think John used most of his old parts from the one I built for him. But then again if you want to go all out you be looking at a spendy machine. Use newegg.com its your friend.... Or use pricewatch.com that to is your friend.

Nice set up bro.... Why two CD burners? I have a DVD Burner and a DVDROM now.... Just wondering why the two in there.

460w PSU is not bad ... I have a Thermaltake PurePower 480W "Butterfly" PSU...damn thing looks sweet with my window case. But I think he wanted you to get a 500w but eh...like said always room to upgrade.

Re: My new computer

Nice setup man!

Yeah it totally depends on what you want to do as far as gaming. If you want a DX10 card my friend just upgraded his PC and spent about 1300 for everything except a case and monitor.

I've gotten to the point to where I'm just going to buy new laptops every year and a half, since they've started putting decent video cards in at a fair price, plus it makes it easy for LAN's. I'm just waiting for the Nvidia 8800 to come out for laptops then I'll get my new one.

Not to be mean about this John. But what you going to get out of it. Just keep that one around and use it for something else. Like another computer maybe for the wife. I know she was having problems with hers. Just a thought there.

My only question is now after thinking about it. Why just a 80gb HDD? You could of got a 120 or bigger for a nice price.

Agreed. I got my 250gb SATA2 Seagate for around $80 a year ago.

It makes it so you can double up your Nvidia video cards to make most games about an average 70-80% faster in framerates. It's pretty pimp, especially when you have like 1400 dollars to drop on two of the latest top of the line cards.

ATI has the same thing called crossfire, but it kind of blows like most Canadian things.

Re: My new computer

I only wanted to spend $35ish on a hard drive for now, when I feel ball'n I will buy two way bigger drives and set them up in Raid, suckers. I am happy with the computer for sure, plays cod with max graphics my monitor will display at 60+fps, then if I turn the graphics down one notch it stays ~150fps and if I am in a building or little redering it pegs at 300+fps which is the max I have set for the game, now I just need to get good with a fast computer.

Funny thing your eye wont even tell the difference over 60fps or was it lower. Eh..who cares. Thats sweet you have a card that can do that. Now go buy Doom 3 and tell me what Fps you get with that.

Re: My new computer

Yeah the point isn't high FPS in lower res though, the more powerful video card you have the higher settings you can run at higher resolutions making the games look beautiful. Supreme Commander with everything on high in 1900x1200 is just.... amazing.

Quake Wars is coming out "soon," who wants to play? :D

Re: My new computer

I have to wait and see the reviews. My buddy stoped me from buying Quake 4. He said it was QIII with upgraded stuff. I hope they make this better then Q4. I mean come on Quake III Team Arena or Rocket arena was damn fun.

With Supreme Commander game settings at all MAX and the map fully filled with 8 teams and all 8 teams covering the whole map my PC is at its knees lagging... If you look at the back of the box of the game you see that it says it runs great on Quad Core....lol...

Yeah never played a game that big, I'm having a LAN this Saturday if you're interested. We're playing SupCom and C&C3 (just came out this week).

Also very nice 3DMark you have SLI setup right?

Re: My new computer

Wow that is nice. I see you water cooled your system. Was it a pita to set it up? Or was it very straight foward! I have to rebench mark my comp again. I know it kicked my bros old setup's ass and he had DDR Ram.... hehehe I still run on SDRAM.

Re: My new computer

Reason for bring this back from the dead. I like to see what you guys think of my new computer I am building. When I save up the cash for it. So here it is:

Rosewill TU-155 Black 0.8mm SGCC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 400W Power Supply $59.99 w/10 rebate
GIGABYTE GA-M55plus-S3G Socket AM2 NVIDIA GeForce 6100 ATX AMD Motherboard $84.99
BFG Tech BFGR66512OCE GeForce 6600 512MB GDDR2 PCI Express x16 Video Card $94.99
AMD Athlon 64 X2 4800+ Brisbane 2.5GHz Socket AM2 Processor $133.00
CORSAIR XMS2 2GB (2 x 1GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Dual Channel Kit $152.00
Western Digital Caviar SE WD800JD 80GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s $42.99
Western Digital Caviar SE16 WD4000AAKS 400GB 7200 RPM SATA 3.0Gb/s $99.99
Subtotal: $657.95

I am going to use my current DVDROM and DVDBurner. And I am going to use my Thermaltake 480w PSU over that 400w PSU with the case. I might even get a nice LCD monitor too. As for Keyboard and Mouse maybe the Logitech BlueTooth model. As for the memory If the price is right I might get a extra 2gbs of the same brand....

So what do you computer geeks think?

Re: My new computer

If you want gaming, go with a better video card. Even just spending another 90 bucks on the video card for a 9700GS will make you a much happier person.

Re: My new computer

I like to stay the nVidia route. I love that chip set. And this card is SLI so should I get a nVidia 7 or 8 over that 6. So this is a huge upgrade from what I have now. I built the comp that I am using 4 years ago. Its basicly this:

Gigabyte GA-7ZXE Mobo
AMD AthlonXP 1900+ FPS 266
1gb of SDRAM PC133
Chaintech Nvidia GeForce4 Ti 4400 DDR 128mb
Sony DVD RW
some brand DVDROM
WD 40gb 7200
WD 80gb 7200
SoundBlaster Audigy 2 If I remember....

So basicly this is going to be some big upgrade in all areas. hahaha For less then I spent on this machine too.

DoughtCom 04-18-2007 01:57 PM

Re: My new computer

Sorry that was a typo, 7900GS is what I meant. It's a great card for the money. It's just hard for upgrades right now with no inexpensive DX10 cards on the market.

92EvilTalon 04-18-2007 10:24 PM

Re: My new computer

Ya like how gaming companys is having a hard time updating Vista users. The way I look at it...any card that has DX9 is good. And Pixal(SP?) shader 2.0. Look at what I am using to play Need For Speed Carbon. And that card has Shader 1.X I think. And came out with DX7. Oh and I had a copy of Doom 3 Alpha and that game run pretty damn good.

So only problem you see is the card I picked. When I go and buy the stuff if the price is right I'll get a better nvidia card. But from what I read I like that card that I picked for now.

Read the data in the next pages

http://www.guru3d.com/article/Videocards/408/8/

Best card I've ever had and even better than 2 - GeForce 7950 in SLI mode

92EvilTalon 04-19-2007 12:26 AM

Re: My new computer

Ya I know. The better the card is the higher the FPS. Stated on the last page. Your eye wont see over 60 fps anyways. But to get the best visual look out of the game you need a better card to do that. Granted I love to spend 600 dollars on the best card on the market. And then find out its not the best anymore. So I stay with the second or the third best. Cheaper but still good in the long run. And it will play all of the games out there as of now. So they did not even say one word about the card. Just talked about Fps. I'll look more into that card later.

Just curious, why get a second hard drive with only 80gigs? The difference between that and vastly more amounts of space isnt much, why not get a bigger one or not get one at all?

Pushit2.0 04-19-2007 11:32 AM

Re: My new computer

I have the 7900gs and would say its a great card for the money, stick with BFG graphics cards and down load Riva tuner v 2.0 RC 16.2 and try to unlock more pipelines and set the core/memory clock to optimum, just watch your temps, anything over ~60-65C is bad for the graphics card. My temps are good, CPU stays at ~42-44C at 75% load and the graphics card creeps up to 60C and stays there.

Re: My new computer

Yeah it's about having more videocard power for new games. Has anyone seen the videos of the new Crysis game? FUCKING AMAZING, it will be the best game of the next year or two. Hands down. If you want to play any of these games with nice details you're going to need a DX10 card. If you're just interested in Half Life 2 and Counter-Strike or World of WarCrack then a 7900GS will be fine. I have a highly overclocked 7900GS in my laptop right now and play HL2 in 1900x1200 just fine.

The nuke at the end of the video blew my mind, no other game has come close to details like this. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IGQ8OobkWio

Re: My new computer

Wow that looks better then HL2's engine. Not bad not bad. I'll get the DX10 cards. Hope the price comes down on them. Spendy cards I say.

Holy shit that game looks kick ass! Wonder what the Min. Req.'s are for that?! I totally want to build my machine to play that now aside from webdesign.

I'm a fellow nerd building a new pc as well. Just bought Sonata II case from newegg and am building it more and more as the cash allows.

What would a card cost to run that Crysis game?! Omg that is sweet.
