Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
I figured that since Tim let the cat out of the bag ... I might as well too. The GSX is getting completely hacked apart and becoming a RWD tube car.
Here is some history .... I got the car from Steve Hill and had the moronic idea of having a nice 12 second daily driven car. After buying a 3" Thermal it was all over. The car got a built motor, an FP3052 & some supporting mods. It made 451WHP and ran a 12.1 ... later on that was not good enough .. the madness continued to an 11.5, then an 11.2 ... and 11.1 and finally a 10.97@128.99. Best trap was a 129.98 with a whopping 1.88 60ft time :) I stripped the hubs of my Quartermaster this fall and the car was down for a while. So Tim (EvilEvo) and I decided that both the EVO and the DSM will get lighter and get bigger turbos. Initially we both wanted to partially tube the front and cut out the rear floor. Then somehow with the help of a lot of Vodka-Redbulls we decided that we should go RWD ... then later it all evolved into lets hack the cars apart, sell all the stuff we don't need (everything), buy a welder ... learn to TIG weld and build 2 full tube chassis cars. My FP30 and some other parts turned into a Miller Syncrowave 200, we rented a garage, bought a ton of pipe from the local FleetFarm, a chopsaw, united all the tools and started practicing. Initially there were some really disappointing moments, kinda like WTF did we just do ... but as time passed we got more confident and started seing the light at the end of the tunnell. Enough with the BS ... back to the project at hand. The idea is quite straightforward. Remove floorpan fron the DSM, cut the front, built a 25.1E tube chasis from chomoly ... fit it in the DSM, get big-ass tires and auto tranny, a beefy rear-end, a GT4202RV, fab whatever is necessary and go fast. Here are a some pictures of the progress ... Hopefully it will be road-worthy later on this year and be in the single digits. |

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
I think my quest will need the same treatment. Can I pay you in vodka? ;) Sweet project(s).

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Sweet jeebez you guys are nuts! Do you guys have to wrestle the welder away from each other or what? ;)
|
Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
There are going to be some sweeeet cars out there this year!! Cant wait to see more progress!

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
wow alot of work since i last saw. your making me ou to be the slow guy in winona, but at least im the only one on the road. keep up the good work

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
You guys need to get these cars down to Tri-State Raceway in Earlville for their initial runs. :D

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
HAHA!... Yeah, I think they put something in the water. :D

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Will it run on vodka?

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Fleetfarm sells Chrome Moly DOM tubing? It looks like you can re-use your lower frame jig, looking good.

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
WTF is in the Vodka down there?
You guys are nuts, well i guess crazy in a good way, it takes a lotta balls to do something like this. Congrats to you all you guys and good luck. It was awesome to see you run your 10 sec in person, Good luck and i can't wait to see these cars this year. |
Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
No, haven't wrestled over the welder yet. Both projects are in different stages, so it kinda works out nice.
Fleet Farm does not sell chromoly (although if they did I would be their #1 customer). We just bought quite a few 10' sections of crappy pipe to practice notching and welding different angles. As far as the Vodka down here ... it really isn't anything special. We just like drinking it. I am from Bulgaria so I guess that stuff is in my genes. And yes the project goals are reasonably high, but if any of you have ever visited Winona you probably noticed that there isn't much to do around here. You can go to bars and admire/take advantage of the abundance of college ass, drink, party, work or dedicate yourself to a hobby. We try to do all of the above while putting a decent amount of emphasis on the last option :D ... And Shane ... if Vodka had enough octane and redbull had decent lubrication properties I'd run the car on that s*it :D:D:D |

Do they eat pickles with vodka in Bulgaria?

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Damn Vassil, I was wondering what you were doing when I saw you selling stuff off on NABR. Are you going tuck the slicks way under, or leave the back high like Buschur's old RWD? I'm guessing by the slpe of the fenders inward toward the roofline, you'd either have to mount the slicks way inboard, or keep the rear fairly high. Looks awesome, you guys have got balls. Let the Grey Goose flow!!!!

You guys make us all seem like straight alcoholics :) I guess maybe we sorta are but wow.

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Yep, all 3 cars got cut! Although mine still looks somewhat normal! :(
I feel left out. I should have took Tim and Vassils advice and did the same thing! Fun hasnt started yet... Just wait until they all run. |
Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Just use their scraps. It's still not too late.......

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Thats what I have been doing with the bars they havent welded in yet to mock up my front end. HAHA. I got a decent idea of what I need to do now, I'll leave them to the RWD fun.

I haven posted anything since February, so I figured, I'd put a couple of pics. I am slow, and I tend to do things the most complicated way possible.

Looking good man! What's left?

Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Is that last pic of the rolling chassis with the rear axle in place? It looks like it sits off center towards the rear of the car.
|
Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Its a mock axle... But yes, the 4 link bars are a little long pushing the rear tires a little behind the center of the original wheel wells. It will get taken care of. :)
Almost ready for coating. |
Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Scheides ,
There is decent amount of work left on the car, and if I quit obsessing about little things and try to do things the most complicated way possible it should be a rolling chassis soon. Some of the major things that are left: 1. About 4-5 hours of tig welding (little pieces here and there) 2. Bend and double flare the brake lines/install line lock 3. Weld on three more seat belt mounts 4. Weld on a small pipes to add some extra rigidity to the back 5. Make a fuel cell "cage" 6. Make radiator mounts 7. Weld on tabs for my window net 8. Install parachute handle and run cable, weld on rear chute mount 9. Make a driveshaft tunnel 10. Weld body mounts, weld chassis to shell & finally Tin the car After this which should not take that long it will be time to save up for a the whole 3rd member. With the Strange 9", housing, brackets, axels & brakes it comes to about $3000 Then it will be a rolling chassis that will need a TH400. Now we just have a case we borrowed from a local V8 braket racing dude. At that point I will be able to accurately measure the driveshaft and order one. Finally we have the torque converter dilemma. Gotta decide on a maker and stall. While waiting for all this I will be making myself a header to fit a GT42, and fabbing up a new oil pan so that the sump is on the other side. And finally comes the fuel system which should be easy. It would be done ala Shep, a mechanical pump driven off the crank and then wiring the car and throwing and EMS. At that point it will probably be cold :( Steve, You are right the rear tires are off a little bit. to be precise they are about 3" backwards. I can turn the 4-link bars and they will end up right where they are supposed to be, but that will shorten the wheelbase of the car, reduce the finer points of tuning the 4-link a little bit and according to the local V8 braket racers make the car pretty violent. So I decided to do some body work and redo the arch on the rear fender well moving it about 3" back. It should still look OK and it will give me a chance to get rid of some rust. |
Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
I wouldn't recommend the TH400. It won't like the RPM's associated with a 4cylinder.
|
Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Wow! Is that going to be rear wheel drive now or what?!
|
Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
Nah Tim,
It will be LWD (Left-wheel drive) ... front and rear drivers side wheels will be the ones being driven. All I gotta do is put the rear diff in the driver seat and order a Y-driveshaft with a 90 degree bends. Flexible axels should be easy (rubber comes to mind). Then I can finally go drifting yo :D:D:D And if I get tired of that I will go to the circle track across the bridge :) |
Re: Vassil's Winter Project (25.1E chassis + RWD)
