For those who knew Chester.

Our older cat Chester passed away tonight in my arms while on the way to the vet. We got home from IA and noticed he had problems breathing so we called to get him in tonight yet for an emergancy exam. He didn't make it, he took his last few breaths in my arms in the backseat of Jana's car while we where on 94.

Safe to say we are pretty broken up about it, he's been part of our family for almost 9 years now and he was such an awesome cat. It's just something we never expected to deal with anytime soon and I hate not having him around.

Sorry to hear about that! Had things seemed normal with him before leaving town?

That really sucks guys, i feel for you.

At the very least you know you were doing everything you could to help him out. Being in your arms is probably exactly where he wanted to be.

Re: For those who knew Chester.

Yeah, everything seemed fine before we left, same old normal cuddly lazy cat. I'm just glad he held on as long as he did, we where back out the door 30 min after we got home with him heading to the GV emergancy vet. It really fucking sucks though, I never thought I'd be this broken up over a pet but now I get it.

I'm sorry to hear that Allan. He was an awesome cat. It just won't be the same without him.

Sorry to hear, dude. :( Hopefully you guys replace him with a similar cat that isn't a psycho like that other one you have.

It's amazing how close people really get to their pets. I've suffered 2 dog losses in recent years, so I know how you are feeling. It sucks, but atleast chester is in a better place now. I'm sure he had a good life, with a great family.

My condolences to the both of you, it really sucks to lose a pet. I have lost a few dogs in the past and it is really difficult.

I didn't know him or anything, but I'm really glad you got home in time and were able to be with him. I've worked in a shelter as well as a vet clinic and seen a quite a few animals pass. It seems to be so much easier for them, especially cats if they can be held and comforted. I'm sure you guys being there made him much less frightened and more comfortable.

I am so sorry to hear that guys! That cat was a big part of your family and was a very good pet to both of you. It is nice that he hung on long enough to see you guys that one last time.

Sorry to hear that...Always a tough deal.

My Siamese is 16 years old, so I may be facing that someday soon as well.

Re: For those who knew Chester.

Thanks everyone, it's just weird not having him chewing at the shower curtain, being a big buldge under the bed, having him wake you up in the middle of th enight with either a desire to scare the shit out of you by waking up to his stare down to a big gift of cat farts. He was just an awesome cat and the house just seems so empty without him.

Flo seems a little out of wack. She never cuddles at night with me, last night she crawled right under the covers with me. Normally she's at the foot of the bed with Chester till they fall asleep and he moves up to one of our pillows.

I miss the little (big actually) shit, but I'm sure we will soon give another stray a good home when the time comes.

Sorry to hear the bad news. I'd be broken up if something happened to one of my own 2 cats. As mentioned above, cats are the greatest pets.

Sorry to hear about your loss. We have 2 cats about that old and got them when we got married. I can't stand the thought of them not being here someday. They really do become family.

I'm sorry to hear about the loss of your kitty. I never got to meet him, but I'm sure you two gave him the best life he could ever have.

He sounds like he was a cool guy and I'm glad you're able to make a few laughs when writing about him describing his curtain chewing habits and being a big lazy cat. He'll always be remembered that way.

Again, so sorry to hear about Chester, but also know that he died so very peacefully in your arms.

Oh man that sucks dude. Chester was a great cat, I remember seeing that mammoth for the first time and almost crapped my pants at the sight of just how big he was. Hell i never knew how strong aj was until he picked up chester, then i decided never to mess with him. lol.
He was a true Garfield cat. He will be missed.

Sorry to hear that guys :( He seemed like a nice kitty. Glad you were at least able to hold him one last time while he was still alive rather than have him pass while you were in Iowa.

Thanks to everyone for the kind words. It's been really hard, much harder than I could have ever imagined.

Re: For those who knew Chester.

My family had two siamese cats of specific breeds - Cream point and Lilac Point both came from specialized breeders and were expensive cats, but in order to get those colors they were basically inbred and that creates somewhat unnatural traits in cats. The first one, the cream point was almost like a mentally retarded child, he would "talk" to us and could get his point accross clearly, but he would suck on and try to swallow his tail and eat your shoelaces with the shoes still on your feet. He killed himself when he ate a rope that was too large to pass through his intestines. Blood poisening. I was most attatched to that cat. The Lilac point was the runt of the litter and when we got him he couldn't maintain his own body temperature yet so he really liked the electric blanket. But he liked to chew on wires (like solder and paper clips and crap) and he died from what we think was heart failure. But those strange breeds only have a life span of about 5 years, and they both lived only about 5 years.

JustROLLIN - you are lucky, but I would assume you have a traditional siamese. They are pretty normal.

Re: For those who knew Chester.

We are going to head over the humain society tonight and see how we feel being around more cats and possibly look at getting another one. There are a couple young ones that where just brought in as strays so I'd feel good about giving one a good home, but I kinda feel bad about looking to fill that void so soon.

Re: For those who knew Chester.

Yeah, you might want to wait a little longer. Or get a cat now and name it lester. That's kindof what my uncle has done with dogs, he had one way back called Blue, and after that one passed, he got Buba, and now he has "Buck" So he's on the replacement plan.

Funny you say that:

But it would be way to hard to get another older cat and get attached, especially one who looked like Chester.

Ok, seriously... were you on the Humane website?

There was a cat that looked just like Chester (about a year younger) and his name was Lester.

Very odd....

Lol, no, But my first job was at walser ford, I worked with a guy named Lester. He was a hick in his mid 30's detailig cars at 7 ot 8 dollars an hour. He got fired, but we called him lester the child molester. Not to belittle the cat though.

7 years isn't that old. It likely has another 5-10 years.

I recomend getting a cat at least a year or two old. Their real personalities don't usually solidify until then so you know what you're getting. Also, the young ones get adopted really fast, but the older ones sit and wait forever. (not trying to guilt you or anything, but it's nice to know you got one most people would pass up)
