Toms Project...

4 Attachment(s)
Ok so heres the synapsis (not sure on the word usage) of what im planning for my car, what the Goals for the build are, and what parts i have and will be ordering.
Table of Contents:
Chapter 1...... Planning is everything
Chapter 2...... Goals for the build
Chapter 3...... Status On Current parts and parts to be added
Chapter 4...... Estimated time when Eclipse will be ready
Appendix A.... Pictures
Chapter 1
Planning is Everything

When i was a wee lad... just kidding. The plan for the car is simple, a) Get it running, b) Keep it running and c) Make it as fast as possible in the budget i have.
This time around i am going to make sure i have completly happy with the setup before i start driving, meaning that everything that needs to be taken care of will be.
Before the synchro went out in second, the car had no speedo because in taking out and putting in the tranny 5 times in 2 months the 4th time it was taken out the speed sensor got caught on the motor mount and snapped.
The other issue i was having is that i didnt feel like the knock sensor was working properly due to the amount of knock i was reading on dsmlink. but also when i took everything apart i accidentally pulled the wire out of the knock sensor.... oops.

Chapter 2
Goals for the build

Goals are the same as when i first got this car. This car will be used as a daily driver/Race car for Drag Racing. I would like to see over 500 FWHP (not hamster power). I would like to be able to throw the slicks in the trunk and drive to the track, put down some good times and then pack it up and drive back home.
The main thing with this build is i am not going to leave anything to chance. I am going to make sure that all of the parts are in good shape, that everthing will work as intended and that i get the most out of each part i put on. From Brakes to a Wideband, as long as it takes this will be done correct.

Chapter 3

Chapter 4
Estimated time when this project will be complete.

When is a DSM ever truely complete. This project however i am giving a good guesstimate of 1 month. But I am not going to restrict myself with a time frame. I would rather take the time to do it right then do a half assed job which will just cause me to use more time under the hood.
In past projects i have been in a rush to get things done for some race or track or dyno day. So with that said we shall see how long this actually takes. I have a lot of decisions to make still with this build but we will take it one step at a time.

Because there never will be one. :) I nicknamed this car "The Cure" Basically it was the cure for the ricer in me.

The car looks like it's in nice shape. Why gut the interior (judging from picture 3)?

Why not? I had plenty of fun with my FWD.

Talk to Barton about how "fun" a relatively high hp fwd car was, seriously.

I enjoyed being able to spin them at 70. Its Tom's money, let him do what he wants with it. Lets not have another AWD vs. FWD debate.

I agree, Tom do what you want! Buy some slicks and a wheelie bar :) Thats a big project, its given you alot of headaches, good to see your sticking it out!

Yeah i had to call them, The guy Alex answers the phone like its his personal cell phone I think i have heard answers like "What up?" and "speak." LOL

Jakey: Unfortunatly its gonna have to be the stock 2g throttle body being that the Magnus is flanged for one. Anyone know if there is a way to fit the 1g or another better throttle body on a 2g flange?

I actually like the FWD, Sure i would rather have AWD like my Auto GSX was but this car is ten times faster then the Auto.
Slicks are definatly in this cars future. and with the LSD and the DSMLink Launch control i should be able to set my launch pretty well.

Shane@DBPerformance 02-09-2007 10:47 AM

Re: Toms Project...

1G and 2G flange are the same bolt pattern.

well that makes things easier :) thanks shane.

Re: Toms Project...

This guy will take either a 1g or 2g throttle body and bore it out and do a half shaft modification. $140 shipped and he'll take your 2g tb and bore it out and you will have a 62.5mm tb http://www.throttlebodys.com/

Heres a couple new pics of the progress.
I have thought about a couple things while the engine is out, And, im am thinking it may be time for a new clutch (southbend), and perhaps maybe going with an SCM61 turbo, which then means bigger injectors, (possibly 1000cc) and some other fun stuff. Im am kinda contimplating it right now. but its likely going to put the project back another month before being complete.
So i have come to a couple questions:
Do you guys think it is worth going from a PTE 50 trim, to a SCM61?
Which injectors should i be looking to get?
Should I wait on the clutch and turbo and just get the car in great running shape, or should i say fuck it and get everything done while the engine is out?
Is there anything else i am missing that you think i may need.

EclipseGST 02-28-2007 02:30 PM

Re: Toms Project...

Looking good!

Yes, I would go with the SCM61. They arent really all that laggy.

Is the Magnus intake made different? Looks weird, like it has a patch between 2 and 3 runners. Interesting.

Re: Toms Project...

Those are reinforcement tabs they put on the new ones. Helps stop cracking at the seam.

JET 02-28-2007 05:06 PM

Re: Toms Project...

The SCM61 is quite a bit bigger than the 50 trim, it is a sizeable upgrade.
I also have some FIC 950cc injectors I will be selling. Toss me a PM.

Re: Toms Project...

well things have kinda been pushed back a while due to lack of funds. But come april my bday present to myself is to have a running vehicle, So its all set up, the tranny will be back by the first week of april.
New exhaust (3" apexi n1), wideband O2, sensors and Southbend clutch will also be here first week of april or so. Then i will go balls deep into getting it complete before the 15th of april, then get the bastard tuned and registered.

Re: Toms Project...

Ok so tomorrows the day. Everything happening in one day. Too bad i dont have a web cam to put in a live feed. :)
I looked back on the first post of this thread and said "Holy shit, i had no idea what i was getting into." One month turned into three months of being down.
I have stuck by the same principle, Leave Nothing To Chance.
So far i have Removed the engine completly, got the tranny, Wideband, New Exhaust, Southbend clutch, Turbo Timer, New Plug wires, Air filter, etc etc etc. i have every part that i need.
Its just wierd to be at the end of the project finally. Im sure after 15 pots of coffee it will be done and ill do a street tune to get me by until i can get on a dyno, which with the Wideband it will be much easier then guessing that the A/F is fine. LOL
So this is what my Mod list will look like when everything is done.

Engine:
RRE 6Bolt block
RRE Stage 2 Head
2G Pistons 8.5:1
HKS Valve Springs
Ferrea Valves
NGK BPR7ES Spark Plugs

Dogbox Racing Tranny
Slowboy LSD
Metal Shifter Bushings
Energy Suspension Motor Mounts
Southbend DXD 6 puck Dual Friction Clutch
Fidenza Flywheel
Tokico Shocks and struts
Hawk Performance Brake Pads

Turbo and Intake:
Turbonetics RS49 Turbo Stage 3 PTE exhaust housing upgrade
Tial 38mm External Wastegate
Front Mount Intercooler
Magnus Intake Manifold
1g N/T Throttle body
Custom Piping 2.5 in made by me. :)
Greddy Type S BOV
Greddy Turbo Timer W/Harness
Vibrant Performance Air Filter

Exhaust:
Ported Exhaust Manifold
Apexi N1 Downpipe
Apexi N1 Exhaust

Fuel and Engine Management:
DSMLink Fuel Management System

FUCK, just got back and he ordered the exhaust for a 89-94 GSX by accident.
I called Extremepsi and they want me to ship it back to them and then they will inspect it for damage and then ship me the right one but ill incur the shipping charges. this fucking sucks.

Well luckily Apexi is located in Orange County. They are taking this one and giving me the right one for free. They are pretty cool.

Re: Toms Project...

Ok the motor is in, but there is still much to do. It seemed like it was going to happen today but with the late start because the clutch still needed to arrive before starting, and with my roomate being gone for a couple hours. I ended up getting the engine in the bay and almost in all of the mounts by myself, my roomate arrived just in time to help finish getting everything lined up.
The magnus mani and fuel rail are mounted, the exhaust mani and turbo are mounted. Now it gets down to all of the details. Which sucks.
I was a complete idiot when i took this motor apart, i managed to lose a LOT of bolts. So tomorrow after i go to Apexi to pick up my exhaust i gotta go to Home Depot and pick up a shit ton of bolts. Also my new rims arrive tomorrow (Project2g is trading my GSX rims for the chrome rims that came on his car, because he is going to put those on the car he is selling)
Looks like im taking the day off tomorrow as well. :)
