Apparently the new skyline is rumored to feature two of these puppies:

So is that to help spool up? It seems like a pretty good concept in theory. It also seems like it would at least double the price. I can't even imagine what kind of electrical components and materials they would use for that kind of heat.

I'm going to have to read through that when I have a chance. I think the basic idea is to reduce turbolag and integrate the turbo with other electrical components (ecu, egr, fuel injection, etc.).

Cool I guess, I am not a fan of instant spool, low end with no top end power. The VNT turbos is where its at, once they make them bigger.

That small thing is going to have lag? And I don't see why the computer would need to have another sensor to take account for. If it's getting oil (and coolant) then there shouldn't be a reason to recieve data from it. Unless you want the shaft speed.....

I might be way off, but is it supposed to be like the new 911 turbo and diesels with the variable veins in it?

The goal is the same, the method is way different. Good "low end" power with good "top end" power is the goal. The variable vain does it by essentially changing the exhaust side AR. This new one here does it by using a turbo that is sized for top end performance and using a built in electric motor to make it boost at low RPM for better power. Or at least that's how I interpret it.

One thing to note, in that document that's linked, it seems the focus is fuel economy. The turbo is small, because it's going on a small motor. Performance in this case seems to be getting the same power form a smaller motor, and increasing fuel economy while doing so. All this new awesome technology that would rock for sports cars, is really being designed mostly with economy cars in mind.

I wonder how the electric assist will turn out if they do throw it on the skyline? It would be badass if they could get the same responce that variable veins did for the 911. Diesel level torque in sports cars is awsome:D

They must have some strong motors. Spooling a turbo is no easy task, just the frictional losses can add up to a few HP

It's 1.75 KW to the shaft, about 2 KW input. Which is about 2.3 HP to the shaft. I only skimmed the info but that's what I picked up.

I may just have to call the development team over at garrett to see if they need someone to test these puppies. They use our Laser Vibrometers during their development stages.

Very interesting stuff here. I also like to see how it plays out on the new Skylines. But that is just some crazy stuff there.

Hell, I'll just build my own assisted turbo with a big 12V exhaust fan, like they sell on Ebay. My 3575 will hit full boost by 2000rpm. Mmmmmm, boost.

No, they want to use a small motor for fuel economy. The Low end power is so the customer cant tell it is a small motor when he drives it.

I talked to my sales engineer that oversees Garetts account, he was planning on makeing a trip out there soon so he will see what he can do. Maybe give them a little more discount if they throw in a prototype. LOL i told him make sure its a big one. LOL I wanna be the first with one of these bad boys. ha ha ha.

Kinky, well no... Heres what our company makes for Automotive Applications, (a lot of F-1 Racing teams use the Valve train measurements) we also work with many other applications, like Aerospace, MEMs, Military and other fun stuff.

Its true, blowers are where its at! if turbos were faster why wouldnt Top Fuel cars run them?!


Oh, wait, they tryed it in the 80's and couldnt keep there drivetrains from blowing apart (there now outlawed in that class to)
