Remote start in a MT.

Has anyone had this done at a local store? I stopped by Street Scenes last night off 81 and he said the installer wouldn't do it due to the horror stories of people starting the cars and sending them through the garage due to having it in gear.

I'd like to get a unit for the Speed6 and this time around have one that will tell me if the car is running or not, and also have some additional security features on it.

I'm curious to know if places like Best Buy, and ultimate will install this on a MT.

Re: Remote start in a MT.

Some will, some won't, but chances are the big retailers won't due to liability reasons. I know Mach 1 in Golden Valley will install a remote start on a manual tranny car and they sell a lot of the high-end stuff so you should be able to get exactly what you're looking for. Check with the dealer too, I bet you can get a Mazda one that would be covered under the warranty. Have you checked with the SST that sponsors MNSC? I was very impressed with them when I got my windows done.

I am pretty sure that most places will not due it for the same fact of what you were told by street scenes. I will talk to my bubby at Best Buy, he is friends with all of the master installers. But I am sure that there is somewon that could do it for you.

As mentioned in your thread on The Other Board, you're going to have to be very careful with everything on that car due to is being CAN-based. The BUS's in a CAN system are very sensitive; that is if anyone ever gets access to read the data strings coming off of the Mazda BUS.

Chris, what location did you go to? The one on 81 or Uni? I was at the one in 81, and I can't say I got a good first impression.

Jakey, I'm still trying to find more info on all the CAN based shit. This is why I hate technology. ;)

Re: Remote start in a MT.

I don't know what he just said ^. but thats cool
I loved my viper xv 791 2 way alarm. It had a little screen and would tell me all about what was going on with my car. I would say check Ebay for the alarm itself and most likely SST by northtown will do it. If you can't find anyone, let me know i might have someone that can do it. (he does work at a big company)

I actually have tried to remote start my car a few times when it was in gear. Thank god it was in fourth, so it didn't jump to much and refused to start.

I'm gonna probably check in there sometime next week and see what I can do. As of right now, the Mazda might be getting put away for a while when the first snow flies. Then we will go back to driving the Prisim and reap the benefits of remote start again. :-)

I'm hoping to put on less than 3k miles from now till May on the Mazdaspeed anyway.

Re: Remote start in a MT.

Damn dude, you just bought a new car who cares about mileage, just enjoy/drive the thing!

CAN is awesome if you can get access to the BUS. The problem is that everyone likes to add their own proprietary access capabilities to the data streams. There are ISO standards relating to CAN but the question is whether companies will choose to follow them or not.

Jakey/Allan, care to explain this CAN/BUS stuff you are talking about or link me to somewhere that does? Does it have to do with the no-key ignition?

Re: Remote start in a MT.

If you can get a hold of John from hand command he should be able to install it for you. The only problem is I have not seen him around for about a year now so I could not tell you if he is still in. There is a shop near Elite that might be able to do it for you. For got what there name was but they are on MNSPORT. I would not trust street scene when it comes to electrical only tints.

My super, super paraphrased explanation of CAN is that everything communicates with everything over a central communication network.

Re: Remote start in a MT.

Have them wire it so it will start in neutral but use the factory clutch pedal switch if it's in gear. They'd probably have to put in some sort of switch on the shifter, and use a relay or two. Shindley would love that kind of project.

Kracka 11-02-2006 04:13 PM

Re: Remote start in a MT.

I just emailed with Shindley yesterday, he seems much more cheerful now that he is done with DSM's!

Re: Remote start in a MT.

I installed mine on my dsm, but I would go to the area 51 shop in brooklyn park. The remote start can most likely be done by unplugging the clutch switch (usually has 2-lower switch is for starting). They have good prices, and decent alarms, or can get a better alarm for ya.

Never heard much good about Area 51, but there have been plenty of rumors floating around regarding cars getting stolen/stripped shortly after being at that place.

meh, i guess with cameras at my house, and being able to catch people to string them up by their small balls, it helps me sleep better at night.

On a car running a CAN system, I highly, highly doubt that it's that simple.

Allan, PM or email ACRucrazy(chris) on here. He worked for BB as an installer for a long time and could probably point you in the right direction. He is a tech rep for BB now so I am sure he has run across a situation similar to yours.

Might be better of emailing him since it doesnt look like he has been on here for a while.

Yeah, no where near that simple. I'm getting more info from Mazda on this as well.

I don't know if you guy's have experience with they, but Area 51 in Brooklyn Park will do it, or Sweet Sounds in Mankato will also.

Does anyone on this site know anyone from street scenes.

Some of us have done business with them, read the thread....

Re: Remote start in a MT.

I have done business with them to but I won't take my car there. They had my 19' toyo tire on hand at there warehouse on centeral or uni.

I don't trust a lot of places, and it is good to get feedback on service and trustability.

I really trust Sweet Sounds but they are in Mankato.

Re: Remote start in a MT.

I know MACH1 installs a compustar that does auto start for manuals.

To activate the auto start feature in the compustar alarm system. You first have to leave the car and close the door. It keeps the car running until you close the doors then it'll turn off the engine so that way it knows it's for sure in neutral.

JET 11-03-2006 02:16 PM

Re: Remote start in a MT.

Yep, I have a compustar system and they are one of the only remote starts setup for a manual. Mach 1 is pretty damn spendy though, I think $900 installed.

Re: Remote start in a MT.

Holy shit, I better get some reach around love for $900 bones.

Hoffer00 11-04-2006 08:53 AM

Re: Remote start in a MT.

The compustar by its self is like 400 - 600 not including all the extra goodies.

JET 11-04-2006 12:36 PM

Re: Remote start in a MT.

I got my compustar on ebay for $350 I think. They wanted like $600 for it.
