Time for sleep

ACRucrazy 01-25-2004 11:31 PM

yea wtf ?

Jakey 01-25-2004 11:32 PM

YES, it has been going off and on all day, I don't know what is worse lately, here or Tuners....

Then again, if servers are switched, won't we have to start over fresh with the board?

Enes 01-26-2004 12:14 AM

I don't think it would be nice to bad mouth another person who does webhosting.. so i am not going to vote..

But to answer Jakeys question..

no you won't have to start over fresh if it is migrated correctly....
and yes i've not been able to get on the board for half of the day today...

I would agree if it hasn't been happening for the past month. I realize it's cheaper hosting, but you shouldn't have as much down time as we do. Hope to god whatever he's doing fixes it. I'd rather pay more money a month and get some quality service then deal with this shit anymore. :censored:

1ViciousGSX 01-26-2004 09:42 PM

FUCK, this sucks. It takes minutes to fully load a page at times and I'm on a cable modem.

Does great sometimes, other times it struggles.

Blade 01-26-2004 09:52 PM

Weird, It only takes me 2-3 seconds, But Ive got DSL

A//// Guy 01-26-2004 10:34 PM

Cable is faster than dsl.

Negative. When you can get upload and download speeds equal to that of DSL, let me know. I have see SDSL packages available with 5mbit up/down.... I haven't seen anything close to that with cable. If you want to argue computers and internet technology, just let Raptor and I know. :smoker:

A//// Guy 01-26-2004 11:51 PM

"In bandwidth, cable is king: With the exception of fiber optics, there is no faster way to send a data stream from one location to another"

Check it out.

Stuff

If your just talking about service providers there are limits as they have shared networks but overall cable is faster.

DSL has its up as it is not a shared line like cable.

I stopped reading that article once I read that. Burst speed doesn't mean shit. The speed that you can sustain over a period of time is what's important. When I had 768k SDSL I rarely had a drop in speed, which it was pegged around 80kB/second. When I'm downloading with cable it's never at the same speed, and usually slowly drops off over a period of time on large downloads.

Bring it on, Peter. :smoker:

A//// Guy 01-27-2004 01:10 AM

I dont want to start anything, we are both right in different aspects.

Cable will be as fast as dsl or faster if there isnt anyone else on your shared provider.

What is standard DSL connection speeds.... Isnt it like 400k? While cable is 768 and up depending on users, area etc.

Theres too many different items in the way to prove whats right. Overall SDLS might be more stable but cannot reach as high of speeds.

Im talking about standard stuff not upgraded services.

Enes 01-27-2004 01:13 AM

I will back him up...

Thing with cable is that most of the time the other side is what the bottleneck ends up being...

I know because i would be downloading from my home machine from my server that i know is capable of downloading at over 2MB/sec and i would go full 380KB (limit of my cable modem) until the whole 4 gig file is done.

I've done it with dsl and same result.. full blast until the tile is done..

Also i've done tests over at my work which went continuous 2MB/sec

Now doing the same transfer from home and work at the same time i was able to get full 380KB plus 1.5MB so that shows to you that even tho my works connection can sustain 45MB/sec downloads/uploads and my home only 380Kb ... i was not going full speed at work.. so i should say T3+ OC48 is not fast enough because i wasn't able to get the full speed???
Wrong...

Limit was the host..

I think you're both right. I also think that either one costs way to damn much. Internet should be a lot cheaper than it is. I'm getting raped by Comcast. :bs:

Yep, I gave up on it last night cause it was so terrible.

Jana 02-01-2004 11:06 AM

No, we switched it (from Raptors) which is why we lost everything (when we also switched to IB Board)

What happened, free wasn't cheap enough? :P

AJ 02-01-2004 02:45 PM

It was just a better choic as far as intrests and now with the business and everything. But we will be going to Enes as soon as I can afford it. So if people want to donate to move maybe enes can post up a figure on cost for the year and we can see what we can do. Cause I want this site to Kick Ass for everyone, but we need up time to do so. Reactor said when we started we would get free hosting if we went national. So he could use us as a model site for thier hosting servies. I didn't want that and then the shitty downtime started to get worse.

Get a price, I'm sure there are plenty enough people here to get it together.

Same here, my 'Ban a Member' fund will be partially shifted to a 'Support the Server' fund.

jimwross 02-04-2004 08:08 AM

DSM Style,

I own a dedicated server from:

http://www.hostforweb.com/

For my Webdesign stuff / hosting. I have TONS of unused space / bandwidth and guarentee 99.99% uptime.

Anyway, I'd be more then glad to donate it if you'd like. Let me know. By the way migrating from this server to the other is easy. All you have to do is backup the MYSql Database, keeping the structure. Then on the new server, import the database, reinstall all of the php files that come w/ vbulletin and voila.

The debate about cable and dsl. Most of the time, Cable will provide overal more bandwidth, however, DSL provides faster response (ping) times. So when your just surfing the web and not downloading, DSL is often faster; downloading large files cable is. I've had both, 2mbps Cable is what I currently have and my 1mbps DSL seemed faster and was much more reliable....

DSMStyle or DSMChick, let me know if you'd like hosting.

Emcee gsxtc 02-04-2004 09:17 AM

i have never had a problem, maybe because of my location, my $.01

AJ 02-04-2004 10:35 AM

Thanks for the offer, but I have already decided I want to go through Enes. I know of several site o his server that have some very solid uptime and I know him more as well. I just don't want to get into free service again. I want to be able to hold a company liable for the hosting and for that I don't mind paying for good hosting. Hell I am payng for soe real crap right now.

jimwross 02-04-2004 04:20 PM

Ah, I hear that... thats why I originally purchased my own server thats remotely hosted.

Well, if you ever need anything holla at me.

Jakey 02-12-2004 10:01 AM

.....site was down again for about 45 minutes early this morning :headache: :censored:
I will be first to officially committ to supporting the DSMStyle.com 'We need a new server' fund. Allan where do you want money Paypaled to, dsmstyle@dsmstyle.com?

1ViciousGSX 02-12-2004 11:32 AM

It's sucking so bad right now that after I finish typing something I "copy" it just in case the server goes down when I hit "Add Reply" :censored:

Jana 02-12-2004 11:49 AM

Anyone who wants to help can always paypal money to Allan (dsmstyle@dsmstyle.com). Hopefully within the next couple of weeks we can look at moving it over to Enes.

I do that too on www.3si.org I think DSMstyle is great for speed. I'm so use to the pathetic speed on 3si.org, that anything else seems awesome. Here is an example. The time it took me to type this is the time it took to go to my PM box on 3si.org. :censored: Shoot me now........

Go to the Advanced menu under internet options and turn off "show pictures" under multimedia. Goes 1000% faster.

You don't understand... 3si.org is HORRIBLY slow. Content doesn't matter when the server's response time sucks.
