Events - General Impression

So i'm sitting here thinking to myself about upcomming events and a few past ones. Outside of the All Mitsu Cookout that's alway sa huge draw, and the Dyno Days we have is there a reason why people don't try and attend more events. Events have ranged from clubbing downtown, to BBQ at various members homes. We even have a Twins game meet tonight to change things up a bit. Now none of these events are anything spendy if you don't want them to be so I can't see it as money issue. There seems to be something going on every weekend to choose from so I don't see it as an availability issues. So what is the issue?

It seems that it's the same people over and over and on those occasions where new members do step out of the online shadows they often see it's not a bad group to join. Everyone is always made to feel welcome in my eyes. Well, except for maybe Tauni... but that's just all in pure fun and sexual enjoyment. :) Who will ever take her place! LOL

So what can we do to get more people out and about before winter time hits and hibernation sets in. Several of us want to get out and play football. I know some of us would be up for golfing, batting cages, more BBQs, and god knows what else. So, I'm not here coming down on people, I'm just curious to know what we can do to get you out there. And it won't help much if the same people post up, as they are usually the ones in the mix. Newbies, speak your mind.... and the rest will follow. ;)

Re: Events - General Impression

I am hoping the cruise Peter and I have arranged brings some new people out, thats something we have never done before and I'm expecting it to be a great time.

Applebees generally draws a pretty large crowd too.

I am very dissapointed in the turn-outs at this summers BBQ's, outtings Downtown, etc.

i will take Tauni's place!!! So Jana lookout!! :D
I agree with hughes, iam just not the bar going type, but when $$$ comes back my way i will def. be making more appearances.
I for one cannot wait till the cruise.

Re: Events - General Impression

I'm am new here also and have not met anyone on DSMstyle except for Jet since he lived close to my workplace and I see him come in.

But otherwise, when you guys are playing football, or barbequing, or going to applebees, I just wouldnt feel comforatable being there since it is not car related.

I would have to go with the Cruise, since I have never seend a DSM cruise before and I believe this would be one in a very long time?

If it is car related, I would feel more comfortable.

we sould all meet up on a monday night at acapulco in coonrapides. It is 50cent taco night and 3.50 for a 34oz beer.

we also should all get together to play some paintball.

AJ 08-16-2006 05:28 PM

Re: Events - General Impression

Hughes,

We've tried a cruise every year. Not once did we have even close to a participant level that made it a god.

As for it being car related or not, the whole idea with some of the events is to just break away from the cars. Relax and enjoy meeting some new people. I think Aaron can say that we welcome new people fairly easily.

Mark, do you guys have an indoor location for paintball during the "winter" season? I know it can get spendy at times but that would be another idea.

Only one way to get to know people....come to our events! At least half the people at Applebees every week are n00bs that not everybody knows so it won't be a problem at all. Seriously, find one of us senior members, be cool with us, and let it ride from there. Definitely make it to the cruise too, its setup for Sept. 16th. Check the "general events" section of the board for more info.

We have? I've been a member of 'Style since pretty much the beginning and I can't remember a single DSMStyle cruise. I know I setup a few Duluth DSM cruises but not too many people were willing to drive up from the Cities.

Speaking for myself and other people that live too far away. I am not sure there is anything more you can do. I plan on attending the Cookout again this year but aside from that it is hard for me to make it to events. I wanted to go to the last dyno day but things didnt work out, but I plan on the next one.

That sounds like a sweet deal.

Re: Events - General Impression

Yea I agree that events are pretty much the same people over and over. Which isnt bad becuase I like that group, but meeting new people and creating a bigger group is always better.

People used to complain there werent enough events... and now we have them every week and there is not a whole lot of interest besides the usual small group. Come on people get out of your basement!

As for someone to replace Tauni, well thats going to be a damn hard spot to fill! :)

AJ 08-16-2006 05:33 PM

Re: Events - General Impression

Yeah, we've tried to get one going every year. 2 out of three we had a route planned and we where going to toss some version of poker in to make it a poker run with some prizes. No intrest. We where talking about doing in on the admin/mod section of the site again, but then you and Peter posted up with the event so we are going to let you 2 run with it and see if it gets more success.

Kracka 08-16-2006 05:43 PM

Re: Events - General Impression

Yeah thats right, I remember the Poker Run ideas now. I wanted to do that last one but I remember not being able to for some reason. Well, this years cruise is happening no matter what even if its only Peter and I out there so everybody get your cars running and be there no excuses!

As for the cruise, just keep people aware of it. If they don't see it, then it slips from their mind and they will make other plans.

As for noobs, I think the problem is that they are shy and won't feel welcome. Everyone I have met on here is pretty cool. Be a little out going and give it a shot! Introduce yourself and don't be too shy. You'll get accepted pretty quick.

Re: Events - General Impression

Yea I was shy At the dyno day at lse..I had a couple of buddys along but I really didn't go out there be like HI! I'm just kinda shy though.. As far as like night outs go and stuff I'm only 19 and can't drinkso I really never see the point I'm not big of a clubing person though.. I would like to make it out to applebees or somthing but everytime I try either somthing comes up or I forget. But it seems Like I work with a couple of guys that are on here..So hopefully I will know some more people! But ya I will probley be able to go out more now That I have a job where I get nights off. But alot of the things have been kida short notice too. But like I said hopefully I will be able to go out more and meet you guys!

can you explain exactly what a poker run is?

I was going to say too, not everyone is into heavy drinking and clubbing.

we did have a indoor feild till the building owner wanted the dock space and cancled are lease.

I would be taking about playing out side at northside sports in ramsey (2 air ball feilds, spool feild, trench feild, urban feild) I could get us a good deal up there now sence that is were my team plays at all the time now sence fsl closed

Re: Events - General Impression

I personally don't care for clubs, and from the stories that have been shared of the past BBQs I don't care for the drunken shenanigans either. I willingly skipped the last BBQ at Brandon's so I could go sit next to Lake Minnetonka at Maynard's and drink tall glasses of Stella Artois all night with a few friends.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for sitting at a bar like Joe Senser's, TGI Friday's, or even Applebee's, polishing off some food with drinks in hand and shooting the shit for hours on end. I'm a big fan of hole in the wall bars that (sometimes) have cheap beer and good food, much like JJ's Clubhouse on 394 in Golden Valley.

For real, these guys are the most welcoming bunch out there. Just come ready to have a good time. Starting fire to something usually gets you in pretty good too!!

If you want to plan events on a car messageboard, then make the events car related. Thats the ones I'll attend. There is nothing wrong with having a get together for drinks or a something, but most noobs aren't going to show up.

Car cruises, BBQs at a park, go-karts, car shows. Those are the things that interest me. I didn't get shitfaced and passed out when I was a kid, and I'm not going out to do it now. ;)

I think the upcoming car cruise and dyno day are great ideas. Need more of those.

later,
Curt

Re: Events - General Impression

I have to say one thing that pisses me off at the events is that no one really introduces themselves. I'm pretty outgoing, and when I was more of a newb I made the effort to say Hi and get to know the people who had been around. I think that the more "senior" members should make more of an effort to introduce themselves to all the new faces.
Also, at most of these events... hardly ever are cars the subject. I know we don't need to talk about cars 100% of the time, but isnt that kinda why we go to the events? To sit around and BS about cars, girls, cars, bitches, cars, hoes, cars, and other pointless stuff?
I think we should also do more events that have more of an emphasis on CARS. We could have a Style get together, and go find some abandoned roads out in shitsville and have some illegal, but safe/cautious fun. My two cents.

Tauni 08-17-2006 04:58 AM

Re: Events - General Impression

Ohh, you boys are sweet. ;)

It's funny. I remember getting bitched at by Craig after the dyno day at LSE for being to shy. After that I made an effort to go the events and just relax, be myself, and have a good time. I've met so many people since then! It's nice because like Aaron said, they are very accepting. Even though the pick on me, we all still end up having a good time, and it's all good. Car related stuff is always fun but it's also nice to take a break from cars and just relax like normal people do! You know stuff like going to the strip club and walking around Sex World, normal stuff.

I strongly encourage everyone to get out and meet more people that you haven't met, whether its a n00b, a senior member, or someone in between! I personally have a ton of random friends from DSMStyle, some that have become best friends of mine! There's a lot of fun people on this website, and there's a big wide world out there that you can access from the interweb! I think everyone should at least try out going to Applebees. Thats always a good time, no matter who shows up!

Re: Events - General Impression

I have met a lot of friends off of this site. Some of which I don't talk to anymore and some of which I do. Either way, at some point in time everybody is "new". And the only way to meet new people that have the same interests as you is to come out and hang out with us.

I actually met Jet off off of the MNDSM message board, because I had a problem with my 2G. We talked on the phone a few times about my problem and then went to a few meets at Elite. From there I met everyone I know now.

And if a errogant asshole like me can meet new people and carry on friendships then anyone can.

He's right. I'm a brat and I still made friends :P

I don't get what the big deal is? It's not like you would run out of things to talk about with anyone on the site. Just bring up the latest problem with your DSM. It's the common theme of pretty much everyone here, so there ya go!

Does anyone remember a specific person on here talking up a storm about how we don't have enough events, right after he got back from the East Coast? I do, SWANNY WE HAD TONS OF EVENTS, WHERE WERE YOU MAN??

But ya, it is the same group over and over, but I like the group, so I am not complaining. But new people are always nice, which is why I tried opening up my house on 2 occasions, and offering free everything, to hopefully eliminate money as an excuse. We had a great showing at my first bbq, but again, it was the same people. Only people who showed up that I didn't know, were Tauni's 2 boyfriends.

I won't be able to attend much for awhile now though. Maybe here and there, but by the time I'm done traveling, there will probably be snow on the ground.

PS - What noob here has shown up when I was there, and I didn't say hello to? I try to say hey to most of the people I've never met.

Re: Events - General Impression

Oh and I don't understand how some people are saying at our events, that cars aren't the subject. I know at applebee's, I think about 80% of the conversation there is cars, at least where I'm sitting. Either Andy is talkin about how much torque and little HP his conquest makes, or a bunch of guys fighting over some 91 TT stealth, or certain events involving free appetizers are thrown around, or how I was drunk and broke my tranny, *edit*, HMTing Brians civic, crappy overpriced hatchbacks on MNSC, Reid talking about carbon molecules, Hughes talking about drifting so bad he gave his g/f a concusion, Peter showing off his sweet fiberglassing skills, I can go on and on. So I don't understand what you're talking about there.

Yup, I didn't know anybody off of style back in the day when it first started (think body kits ;) ). I remember hearing on the old MIAC board how people hung out at the Spin Cycle out on University and decided to check it out. While there I met CVD, Hughes, and Cher. They introduced me to others, and the rest is history.

I guess I'm trying to say if you don't show up to events (or show up and keep to yourself) you'll never get to know anyone.

With a few exceptions, all the friends I've made on either this board or other DSM boards have gone on to become much better/closer friends than those I met while in college.
