Bigger and better
So who says dsm's aren't reliable? All you need is same-day parts available!
My bastard 20g blew up on my way into work this morning, and I want to give a very special thanks to James (SlowBubbleCar) for taking the time to help me get my ride back on the road again! I limped the car back home @ 5:15pm from the Applebee's on Hwy100 & Duluth St. At 6pm, I have all of the fluids drained and the manifold off. Break for dinner to let the turbo cool down before I yank it out, and then head down to Hopkins to meet up with James to pick up my 'bigger and better.' Yes he had already listed it for sale, but it was still bolted to a car. James took the time to help me by yanking the turbo off for me as soon as he was off work, even though he had other stuff to do. I show up at about 8pm & we finish up yanking off the turbo & shoot the shit for a wee bit. I b-line it home, stop at DQ to keep Anna happy (and me, I guess!). 9:45 I have the bastard 20g pulled, and by 11:30 I have my new little hamster wheel installed, a GT3582RLE-M (?) I think technically this should be called a GT3582RLSM because it has the 4" inlet w/ ported shroud, but who gives a flying F, this thing is big and bad ass! http://www.scheides.com/albums/gt35r/DSC00426.sized.jpg (yes, turbo helped with the install!) http://www.scheides.com/albums/gt35r/DSC00427.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/gt35r/DSC00433.sized.jpg http://www.scheides.com/albums/gt35r/DSC00434.sized.jpg running like a champ! So of course, I ran into some coolant line leakage (my bane when it comes to turbo installs, I have no idea why) so I ended up dinking for an extra 2 hours on the thing. I ended up getting it all buttoned up, and I'll take it for a test drive tomorrow! |

Re: Bigger and better
Sweetness and props for the fast work. I hate the turbo lines, if i had it my way I would use quick release valves like on air compressor tools.

Re: Bigger and better
internally gated 35R? Hopefully it doesn't creep too bad.
|
Re: Bigger and better
The previous owner didn't have any creep issues with it at just below 30psi. He said it might have spiked for a second but that was it. I bolted it up and never used it.

Well yeah... try running 15-20 psi and it'll probably creep to 25 or something. |
Re: Bigger and better
Yea, frankly I'm quite interrested in how low it will go as well. I'm sure itwon't hold up top like an externally-gated one would, but with the big flapper, the cut exhaust housing, and my LIPP o2 housing, it's going to be interresting!
|
Re: Bigger and better
As soon as you said that you were buying a turbo in the for sale ads I knew you were going for that turbo. Good job man hope it works out for ya.
|
Re: Bigger and better
Pretty bad-ace, man. Way to repair! I can't wait to hear what you can do with that thing.
|
Re: Bigger and better
I agree with andrew. Congrats on the fast swap, a real cool story TGIF huh?
|
Re: Bigger and better
Thats awsome. good choice in turbos. My Internally gated 61 creeps to about 22psi above 6000. With the LIPP housing you'll probly be OK. Get that thing out on the road and give us some reports.
|
Re: Bigger and better
Great story Chris!! That was a fast turn around. I guess we'll be able to see this monster at the Cookout. W00t!
later, Curt |
Re: Bigger and better
So how is it?!?!?!?!?
|
Re: Bigger and better
Working this morning, I'll have it on the road in a while ;)
|
Re: Bigger and better
Nice! Less work and more play. :)
|
Re: Bigger and better
Maybe the DSM gods are smiling down on you or something, because without your old turbo taking a crap on you, you wouldn't have gotten this turbo, and it just happened to be for sale locally.
Good to see that everything worked out well |
Re: Bigger and better
Well said! I'm on the home stretch here, but I need to leave for a wedding @ 5pm...we'll see if I get to take it out yet today! (crosses fingers)

Re: Bigger and better
Just took the car out for a spin. The first few trips around the block i had coolant leaking out of the coolant feed line (again! Ahh!). Checked the coolant level, all is well. Then after getting back out after a 10 min drive, no coolant leaking anywhere, and the coolant level is ok! :)
She definitly needs some tuning time. Not sure my 650's will be up for the task past pump gas, but we'll see. Second gear pulls yield max boost pressure of about 17psi, and boost onset occurs somewhere around 4500 rpms. There is a ton of power in this turbo, the sheer size of the thing makes me just giggle! |
Re: Bigger and better
You will definately need bigger injectors. I have some 780's that I was going to use for that turbo.

Re: Bigger and better
he definately is, he hooked me up with a 14b just about 2 weeks ago.

Re: Bigger and better
Ok, between work & weddings this weekend, I *finally* was able to get everything totally buttoned up & take my GSX for a real drive. This turbo lacks the midrange punch that my 20g had @ about 4000rpms @ 22psi, but as of now I'm only running about 18psi & richened up the tune I had on the car before by about 6% from 4400rpms - redline.
This turbo rocks! Onset is smooth as silk, and once it gets going, it just keeps pounding through the gears. Transient response is awesome thanks to the ball-bearing center section. I'll get it on the rollers sometime soon & see how she stacks up against my old 20g! |
Re: Bigger and better
What boost are you running at? Is there any creep that you're noticing?
|
Re: Bigger and better
Running at about 18psi. No creep past there! This thing has a cut turbine housing, big flapper, and I have a wide-open o2 housing, so I'm pretty pleased. This will make a nice street setup :)

Re: Bigger and better
Ya, I run that same O2 housing as well. I also have a PTE turbo, but with the uncut housing. What flapper is in there? I'm just wondering if when I upgrade from my 50trim to something larger, if I'm going to have to go external. But if you're not creeping with a GT35r, well then maybe I'm safe. I'll be looking to go more with the scm61. Get some numbers outta that setup so we can see how well it performs!!
|
Re: Bigger and better
The thing with an internal setup is that it won't hold boost as well as an externally gated will, especially at high-boost.
|
Re: Bigger and better
The problems you might run into with an internally gated setup are:
Having trouble running low boost(creep) Maintaining very high boost levels(boost drop in the upper rpms), high backpressure can hold the flapper open, the bigger/more surface area of the flapper, the more likely it is to have trouble at high boost. Externals can have this problem too, but there are often many higher pressure springs to choose from with an external and you can push boost to the top port of an external to help hold the valve shut. Unstable boost(boost level wavering up and down a couple psi), I mostly see this on the ball-bearing GT28 sized turbos Slightly more lag than an external(externals don't usually start to open until immediately before full boost, internal flappers are often partially open much earlier) |
Re: Bigger and better
I'm planning on running a PTE 5031RE DBB w/cut wastegate divider.
I also recently purchased the Lipp O2 Housing for my un-cut 18g. I have a huge 3" dp, and it practically eats my stock ported 2g O2 housing. I bought a used Evo III O2, but I don't like how the ports don't match up, and my DP is tweaked a bit and really close to the oil pan. So, I took it off and it's for sale. How is that GT35R running with your cut housing and wide open O2? A lot of people are baggin on the PTE Boost Creep Band Aid by cutting the divider. Have you noticed any issues with the cut divider, or is it all good. People are saying yeah, the cut housing works, but with the expense of Turbine Efficeincy. Can any of you guys comment on your experiences with the cut divider. Thanks for the space. Quote:

Re: Bigger and better
The main problem with the setup is that it's still internally gated. It would not creep at all, but would have a 3psi spike at boost onset. I could set it as low as about 17psi w/o any creap what so ever. In the end I ran it spiking to 23psi and falling to 20 and it worked quite well.
I have since sold this setup, btw. |
Re: Bigger and better
That's awesome.
I almost cancelled my order this morning based on what I read else where, but if you say you've had nothing but success, then that's good enough. I can't wait to get that DBB 50 trim from PTE. Thanks for the great info... Quote:
