What to do with this....
I have this huge rust spot on my roof that is deep, like some one had previously bondo-ed the hood and its coming off now. I want to start doing the body work and have it painted, but I don't know what to do with it. It's about a centimeter or more deep. Any advice?

Re: What to do with this....
Buy a rust free car? Like...a conquest? ;)
I'm no body expert, but I'd say to just sand it all off, and build it back up with something, then smooth over. Someone on this site will know what to do for sure though. |
Re: What to do with this....
Talk to Mark, he'll be able to help you for sure. And a centimeter deep!??!!?1:eek: Holy shit, bondo job from hell if you ask me.

Re: What to do with this....

Re: What to do with this....

Re: What to do with this....
I do that from time to time...

Re: What to do with this....
Hmm, I thought I posted that you should just replace the roof skin, but something hapened and it didn't make it up. Anyways, with all that rust on it, you'd just be best off to replace it.

Re: What to do with this....
My advice is to wear a bikini next time you take a picture that reflects in the windshield. Actually, you'll either have to rebondo it or replace the skin. Trying to get the contour right by pounding it out would take a serious pro. If you want to wait til next winter, I'll give you my whole roof skin with the sunroof. I'm putting the non-sunroof skin in that I didn't get to last winter. It doesn't look to tough to swap except for taking out the windshield.

Damn board gremlins wouldn't let me put a smiley after my first sentence on my last post or separate it into two paragraphs. Boo.

Re: What to do with this....
Throw some Phosphate cleaner on there. It'll eat the rust away no problem, but if it's rusted all the way through the metal, you'll be left with a big hole!

Re: What to do with this....
Sounds like a pain in the ass.
Considering the condition the REST of the car is in, I'm considering get a whole new shell :) with a 4 bolt. We'll see. thanks for all the help so far :) Oh, and Steve... If thats what you are going for, I was washing the car earlier before the picture was taken ;) |
Re: What to do with this....
Sand blast that bitch!
|
Re: What to do with this....
You could always give it a name and love it.
By the way nice reflection are you standing on the hood? |
Re: What to do with this....
Cut a hole in it and then you got a sun roof.

If you drive it in the winter though, the rust comes back fast, even if you fix it... it will probably come back in a couple years. |
Re: What to do with this....
Unreal: haha It doesn't have a name, but I've dubbed it my boyfriend since boys suck and I love my car more than any boyfriend haha! And yah, I planted myself right on the hood by the wipers haha!
Tom: I was thinking that. Like cut a hole and duct-tape a piece of plexi glass to the roof... Peter: Yah I think getting a new shell is going to be easiest. Actually I think what is going to end up having to happen [unfortunately] is I'm going to have to buy a beater AND a shell, wait until winter though, and spend the winter doing the motor swap and maybe some add ons :) Have her all ready to go in the spring. Which will be a little disappointing. First winter to ever own an awd vehicle [besides my old Explorer] and I don't even get to have any fun with it! |

I needed to throw away my power sunroof because it weighed a ton, so I found some sheetmetal pros and they did this for me. It ended up being about $250.

Re: What to do with this....
is that a sunroof? plexi or something? Or is it just metal?

It is sheet aluminum, that weighs about as much as a pack of cigarettes.

Re: What to do with this....
That kind of sweet!

Re: What to do with this....
Where was this?? Where did you find these people?
|
Re: What to do with this....
You could always wrap it in leather?

Re: What to do with this....
I believe the guys are from the Chicago area, I think they are the ones who did his cage too.

Re: What to do with this....
Shitty. thats far.
|
Re: What to do with this....
For about $300 you could get a cheap pop-up sunroof installed in your car, that may be your best bet. It won't add too much weight and it'll be a cool addition in the process (much better than a piece of sheet metal IMO since this is your daily).
