Forget looking in your suburb, go to a recommended place in the cities. I like Motors by Gosh in Crystal.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

well i had talked to a guy in shakopee, he said you would port my block out for 28 dollers a cylinder. Is this a good price? I also want to get it heat tanked, should i do this? I was told that i should have the Machine Shop take out my balence shaft to, should i do this also? This is my first rebuild so all the help i could get would be great thanks all.

How about go to a place with DSM experience recomended by senior DSMStyle members? Nothing that comes out of Shakopee is good.

Talk to LSE Performance and DB Performance, those two shops will set you in the right direction.

The Napa machine shop on 13 in Shakopee used to do all Brents/Osofasts work.

www.napaonline.com
www.dexonline.com

Quicker to find out yourself than to ask....it may take 10 seconds of effort though.

He's right.^^^ But its a few miles west of 35W on 13. On the south side, and in front of pro-kart(I think thats the name).

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

lol Brent Rau didn't have his machine work done there. People think that BS cuz they have a picture of his car from like 5 years ago. I forget why, but that wasn't it. I live 4 blocks from there. That napa is right on the burnsville / savage border, not shakopee.

Wagamon ( spelling prolly wrong) brothers in minneapolis or whatever. QPR always used that shop and they are familiar with DSM motors. They did our motor too, and it still runs top notch.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

I asked about the picture, they told me they did his head work. Besides that I'm sure Mo knows Brent well enough to know where he got his engine work done.

Yes, he did, he took stuff to some Napa machine shop down there. I had Brent take one of my heads to his guy at Napa to get it checked out and fixed. I had the head done at Wagamons and the valves weren't sealing. Brent's guy at Napa redid the valve job and also fixed some valve guides that Wagamons installed at the wrong height.

Haha, thats a good one!

Why not just take it somewhere well known? ask the seniors they would know. Ask LSE or DB performance.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

I can't believe this simple question comes up every three months and the same answers appear.

The local speed shops don't have time to answer calls on where to bring your work elsewhere, they have bills to pay. If you're not a paying customer, don't bother them.

The answer has been laid out more than clearly in this and every other thread pertaining to this. Or you can just go to your local Pep Boys, save a buck or two, than come cry to the board when your pistons weld themselves to the block.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

K well the guys that work there now? They haven't done the work. One machinist was fired because he went to jail and the other guy was the one that told me some different reason as to why they had the picture up. I guess I appologize for "bad information" however i consider direct information from them pretty accurate.

Take it to napa if you want. They couldn't even clean a head properly ( yes i speak from experience) but take it there for machine work!!! good idea.

I don't think I've heard one bad thing about wags, and anything that did come up was obviously fixed otherwise we would hear many bad things about them. Unless LSE has them now, they also have all the special doo hickies mike had made for 4g63 motors.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

If you want to hear bad stories about Wagamon's ask anyone who has had work done by them outside of QPR.

I'm with Matt D. Not a fan of the W.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

Wags has it's up's and downs. The killer with Wags is they cater to who brings in the money. Wehn we dealt with them in the good old QPR days they had a new motor almost every other week it seemed like. Of course they are going to do some of their best work with us compared to the 1 time customer. But we still got shafted all to many times when they would push stuff out to get their circle track cars done in time, that's their big money area.

This has now been added to the list of stuff we are going to bring on the site, a list of ALL area machine shops and hopefully a section to post a comment about them when you've used them. Chances are any machine shop will know how to do the work, it's the work ethic of those at the shop to get the job doen right and it's the consumers job to check to make sure they not only know what they need, but know how to check the results.

JET 04-20-2006 09:38 AM

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

Yeah, I have dealt with Wag's because they are about a mile from my house. I actually told QPR about Wag's and that is how they found them. They have all the capabilities, but most of their workers are sub-par. I had my head done there outside of QPR and had to take it back because they messed up. The valve guides were pushed in at totally random lengths, like almost 1/2 inch off!! Not good with a high lift cam. It probably would have smashed the seals even on a stock cam.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

That's why I like Gosh. You don't get some $10/hr kid working on your stuff, you get the owner with ~25 years experience. I've yet to have a problem with anything done there, and Shindley had a lot of DSM stuff done there as well. Plus he's got his own torque plate for 2.0's and 2.4's.

QPR didn't have any special doohickies, that was just sales talk.

JET 04-20-2006 11:31 AM

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

QPR had torque plates and some other special jigs made for assembly. I believe LSE has them now.

TalonFiero 04-20-2006 12:57 PM

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

For what its worth my 2.4 was machined by Wags and assembled by QPR. I have just under 25,000 miles on the engine and it is still going strong. I had the block bored .20 over torque plated to 100 ftlbs on arps. But it seems quite a few friends of mine have had bad experiences at Wags, one ex-employee told me a few dirty secrets about how they treat motors while they dissasemble them. Something about "ringing" the cranks to get the bearings to pop off. I can't recommend them.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

The motors Wags done for us were brought in completely torn down. We got our engine back within 3 business days. I guess we have good experiences with them so yea.

I'm with steve though. Spend the extra couple dollars and have someone that specializes in motor work do the motor work. The few places I've had do my flywheels around my house don't understand the .610 step concept. Some red rooster that qpr sent me to did it perfect. If you cant get a flywheel right, I don't think I'd trust them with a motor. That's my .02. I'm done now.

I have heard good things about DGmotors but I am not sure if they have any experience in the DSM land.

Might be worth looking into though. www.dgmotors.biz

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

Headwerks is in Bloomington, but their prices are probably more then your average DSMer wants to spend. But they do top notch work. No BS.

I'd second Steve's recommendation to use Gosh if you can handle the drive. He did the head on my Talon. Good bang for the buck. Very professional.

Re: which is the best machine shop around shakopee?

Just as another note, the Napa in Savage (where Brent had his work done) is where I had my head worked on. The guy I spoke with was Chris. He is the one that worked on mine. Don't know if he's still there. But when I brought in the head, he saw it for about a second and said "another DSM head to fix" so HE knows the heads. Whether or not he is still there, I have no idea. He did a damn good job on mine.

Other than that, I would definately listen to Steve, Shane, Jet and some of the other senior members. They have had the most dealings with machine shops in higher horsepower applications. They know their shit!!
