Slightly on topic...

I've been wondering why people are currently joining? Is it for the college money or what?

Re: Anyone joining the reserves/army?

I went in for the free schooling, and the opportunity to do a job no other 19 year old would be able to do with just schooling and no experience. Now I'm out, and all the bullshit and training sure payed off!

Re: Anyone joining the reserves/army?

They have been offering very generous signing bonuses lately along with the tuition money. Why not currently join though? A lot of people do support the war, and as far as wars go (besides for Dessert Storm), this is one of the safer ones to be in.

What was your job/training while you were in the marines?

I have been kicking around the idea since probably 2002 but havent decided yet. After talking with an army buddy last night it only made me think about it more.

Re: Anyone joining the reserves/army?

I went in for Avionics, which is pretty broad. I ended up being a 5953 Air Traffic Control Radar Technician. So I was the tech who fixed, maintained, setup the Radars at the Airports. I was in Pensacola, FL for 1 1/2 years gonig through the schooling. I have what they call "military equivalent of an associates" in electronics. All free, plus getting paid. So unlike college where you pay to go, and have to have a 2nd job to pay for shit. I went to school free, and that was my job was to go to school, so I got paid. My regular 8hr day at school was my 8hr work day, so i got paid as such!

3 1/2 years experience after I got out of school. So I got out 23years old, associates degree with experience as well, plus employeers LOVE former military for the most part. Got a great job now!

I've also been Toying with the Idea of going back to the Navy :/ although since I've been out I haven't done anything with my training that I've had except use the credits I recieved towards my current degree :p
I was also in pensacola for about 1 1/2 years doing Aviation Electronics
and I've had most of my furthering education needs paid for :D

Yeah, i joined in Aug. '02 for the college money. A bit of a weird story why i joined, but i thought it was a good idea at the time. I have met a lot of cool people too. Marines rock, they kick a**

I personally wouldnt consider joining without the possibility of being deployed.
As for joining, I need to finish college first. After that is done I may join the Army. The Air Force is interesting, but I dont think it would be much fun unless you got to fly something fast, and I dont really like the odds in that respect. You probably have a better shot in the Navy, and I dont want to say anything bad about the Navy but....it aint my thing.

No shit? Who were you're instructors? Ever heard of SSgt Sheffing? Well I heard he's a Cpl now due to some shit, but he was one of my I strand instructors, the only one I really remember. Did you know Gunney Guy? His wife was my boss in Japan. Pensacola was kick ass!!! I loved the beach, and I loved traveling to Panama City every other weekend and partying at Club La Vela!

Speaking as someone who is currently enlisted in the guard AND as someone who has deployed...Don't Do It!

http://www.iceminion.com/pics/hot/fun.htm

the one line I tell people when they ask me about signing up is:

"The military should only be considered when you have failed in every other aspect of the civilian world."

the military takes people as old as 36, you can sign up later.

Nice pictures, but I completely disagree with your perspective. I do not feel I failed in any aspect of my life. I joined fresh out of high school. I wasn't a failure in school, I did very well in school. That allowed me to pick pretty much any job I wanted in the enlisted side. The military deffinately had it's shitty parts, but so does everything else. For giving me free schooling, and the experiences I had that no one else my age would have chances of doing otherwise, and the position I'm in now after I completed my contract, I reccomend it to anyone who is considering it. Hell you can even be a complete moron, going in and out of jail, and join the military and you will have a half way decent job considering you're situation. You always know you have a paycheck coming the 1st and 15th.

And I also disagree about waiting. Sure wait till your 36, then see how fun it is to go through boot camp. Hell no. Being a 36 y/o private isn't what I'd call a great time. then you get out at 40, and you're looking for a job. So the employer has you, a 40 year old, and on the other hand he has a 26 year old, has twice the experience as you because he joined when he was 18 and stayed in for 8 years, and plus is still only 28 so he has a ton of working years still left in him.

I'm 23, I spent 5 years in. I would not be in this position if it wasn't for the marines. I'm not rich, but I consider myself to be doing quite well compared to most other 23 year olds.

Everyone has their own opinion, that's mine. I say if you want to join, DO IT!!

BTW, I like the pic where you said "this is how we deal with camel spiders". This is how we dealt with them. Put a bunch in a bucket and had us a gladiator style fight!

Also nice to see I wasn't the only one with a wierd 'Top' who liked his hats!

At war or not, when you enlist you should expect to serve in any circumstance. The military is not for everybody, you are a prime example.

Re: Anyone joining the reserves/army?

Im not dissing the military, but if you think DSMs are a load of bullshit and a waste of your time, try being deployed with an active army division, I was, it blows.....

But I am in the guard, so I am home most of the time, which is alot cooler then going away for 4 years.....but I understand that some people need to "get away from it all" for 4 years, and thats great.

Nobody can aruge the point that once you are in you are stuck.....the military is not the same for everyone, different units, commanders, and fellow enlisted change everybody's view of weather it was good or not, I personally had more negative experiences then positive ones, I dont know, the money is good, whatever, my opinion is "dont do it".

Re: Anyone joining the reserves/army?

The Cpl I don't know, the only Marine I had for an isntructor was Ssgt Knight, the rest were Navy and couple civilians. Great place to be stationed at weired weather though, storming- sunny in like 5 minutes and back again.
and about the whole enlisting thing :p- I still have 2 SeaBees going on their second tour in Iraq. they both like it. but they aren't really combatants though :/
I personally would enlist again even with the whole "War" thing going on
:: shrug :: I just have more collage to do yet :p

Re: Anyone joining the reserves/army?

I respect you all for signing up and doing a job that I have no interest in doing for my country. Guns and planes are cool and all. But I don't want to be shot at just because I gave someone the right to order me around. In addition, I support any kind of troops we have, but I just don't support the person sending them in.

Well see there's your problem right there! If you sign up, then do it for real, not this weekend warrior shit!

I'm just kidding man, but I have noticed that Reservists/Guard do not have it the same as us who were active. A lot of active duty members will think of you as slightly lesser because you are coming in working with them, and you train 1 weekend a month, and this is something they do full time, all the time, away from home. I'm not saying it's right, but that's how a lot of people feel until you prove to them you actually know what is going on.

You're second mistake was joining the ARMY. ARMY = "Aren't Really Marines Yet". Being part of a Marine unit is off the heezy!
