Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

I just off the phone with them again and they're saying they filled the fluid to the proper level, cleaned everything up, and it appears all seals are intact and the fluid was coming out of the top case breather tube. After test-driving the car they're saying everything is functioning OK and not making any whining or howling noises. A case has been opened with Mitsubishi with everything documented in case a problem arises in the future, but for now they're saying the car is ready to go. I'll of course listen for any noise very carefully and if I don't feel it's 100% I'll be leaving it at the dealership.

Sweet! No down time ftw!

I am going to see if MAP can check my levels while my car is there...better safe than sorry.

Definitely, this is beginning to sound like more common of a problem. One up there and two down here that we know about...so far. Easiest thing to do is just remove the fill plug and let any excess drain out.

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

I'm almost at 30k on mine though...i am guessing it would've happened by now if it wasn't right.

Kracka 02-16-2011 02:15 PM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Most likely. You're definitely due for a fluid change though. Mitsu's interval is 30k normal and 15k severe.

Murlo26 02-16-2011 02:16 PM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Yep...total fluid change is on my spring time list.

I was planning on changing my transfer case and rear differential at 15k miles...my car almost made it!

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

So they would've covered this under warranty if it needed it? Or if it still will need it? (which hopefully it won't)

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Mitsubishi FTL ! Don Herring FTW ! Thats great news for you, Stopping the car and having it towed likely saved you from further damage from heat expansion. Awesome!

If i only I could say the same good things about our dealership here in town. Fuck Brookdale.. you bunch of assholes!
Whew ..feel much better.

So transfer cases howl and whine when fluid comes out? That is odd...

So nothing was replaced as well? Im guessing you just stopped the car because of the noise?

Yes, it appears so.

Odd indeed, but they have test-driven it and say it's making no abnormal noises. I will test-drive to confirm before taking it home. It is good knowing everything was documented (including the factory drain/fill plugs being untouched since the factory) in case something occurs down the road...at least these things have 60k mile warranties.

I definitely have to agree; so far they've been great regarding warranty and mods. I hope the car is fine as they claim and I have no further issues to deal with.

Wonder if it'd be worth it to "not" have MAP check it, and bring it to the dealer to check it as MAP would break that factory paint seal thing Chris mentioned by checking the fluid level. I'd think a break in that paint would give the dealership an out to say "it's been worked on, we can't guarantee anything anymore". Just a thought.

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

I just got home and the car seems fine. Any drivetrain noise it's making I would say is ordinary for an Evo with driveshaft and rear diff bushings. Don did reconfirm that everything has been documented and Mitsu corporate has been notified just in case something occurs later on.

All the guys at Don Herring asked me about mod-wise was to make sure I was still on the stock clutch, they said as long as the clutch was stock then it wouldn't be a problem.

Just a small detail I've been wanting since I bought the car since my IX had it too.

My coated PPI Extreme ported exhaust manifold from SPC in Arlington, TX is done! Should be going on this Saturday...I plan to get the initial pre-manifold baseline dyno done on Friday.

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Looks like quality for sure...I am just a fan of dull and black parts though, so this just seems a bit too flashy, especially for a cast piece. Could be the flash though from the camera, not sure.

Rmondoh 02-21-2011 10:58 PM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

I'll take some pictures without flash when I see them this weekend.

According to Michael at SPC, this metallic-ceramic coating is the best he has in terms of durability and retaining heat, plus he says you can take a metal polish to it and it won't hurt it at all. In the end, it doesn't really matter what the color is because it's going to be covered by the heat shields anyways. :)

Kracka 02-22-2011 12:00 AM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Armando is exactly right, this coating was chosen for it's durability and thermal properties over it's appearance (but to be honest, I really like how it looks). He also offers Techline black (and various other colors) coating, but this silver is the same as what Buschur and PPI offer and has proven itself the most durable over the years.

Shane@DBPerformance 02-22-2011 10:49 AM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

Does their coating handle the high temps of turbo applications? Most of the shiny ceramic coatings are meant for NA temps versus turbo temps. The shiny coated O2 housings that I have got from Buschur have all had the coating flake off in a years time.

Kracka 02-22-2011 11:14 AM

Re: GheyrodX - bigger, fatter, gheyer!

A Buschur ported/coated ex mani and o2 housing has been on my old IX for 50k miles and it's dull now rather than shiny, but nothing has flaked off. So far my MAP o2 elim dp with this coating is holding up perfectly.

Yea but you take care, maintain, and clean your car better than 99 percent of other owners. So those aren't real world results! :D

Well, back to the dealership the car goes tomorrow morning. On the dyno tonight the transfer case started screaming something awful.

Is this some kind of freak problem?

Sadly, no. There have been a few X's come out of the factory with an overfilled transfer case which is what's causing the problems. When properly filled the X transfer case is actually stronger than the 8/9's so it's no longer the weak-point in the drivetrain.

Car is at the dealership and they got me a sweet Focus rental. They're putting the stock cat back on for me just in case the regional rep wants to come inspect the car himself.
