Anyhow, I soldered up the ignition wire last night. This is my last thing I need to get working before I think it's ready to get on the dyno. So hooked it up, wouldn't rev past 2500. Has to be ignition related because that's the only thing that has changed. I changed the timing advance from using the timing table, to just being a fixed value. It's set at a fixed advace of 0 right now, which allowed me to rev up to 3500 before it starts breaking up. And that's where I'm at for now. Gotta figure out what's going on because right now I'm clueless... |
Re: Project Lex
Well... just thinking here, how good is the prediction on the crank signal? I mean, 70% can cut out too much time if the engine revs fast enough, and cause it to miss one and fall on its face. Does it take into account load and the speed at which the engine is accelerating? I'd assume so, but you know what they say about assumptions. :moon:

Re: Project Lex
The answer to your question is I Don't Know. I did ask about it on the MS forums, but of course have not gotten a single responce, and not sure if I ever will...

Re: Project Lex
Well went out to try and troubleshoot the revving issue I mentioned earlier. I fixed it pretty quickly suprisingly (lucky guess). It was obviously something with the ignition so I just started there. I first changed the Ignition setting from Speed Density to Percent Baro per a comment over on the MS boards. Didn't fix it but I think it's setting I should have been set to so I'm going to leave it at Percent Baro. I then, just for fun, changed the ignition max dwell setting from 3.0ms to the max value of 25.0ms. Car idled like total crap. I then changed it to the extreme the other way to the lowest value of 1.0ms. Bam, car revs like a dream. So there it remains. I have no clue how to know what the right setting is for this car, but 3.0ms cause issues, 1.0ms runs like a dream, so 1.0 it will remain until I'm told otherwise.
Woohoo!! Going to drive it around for a week to see if I notice any issues. If not, I will button up the MS box and mount it in the footwell a little nicer with some velcrow strapping or something. Then I'll probably be talking to Shane @ DBPerformance soon there after for a quick tune prior to turboz. Video for your viewing pleasure: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t2ki52efsZE&hd=1 |

car sounds good! once its boosted, you going pump or e85?

Re: Project Lex
Ha, not today :) Haven't set up the stutterbox or NLTS yet. Might be something I can play with over this week of test driving.

Got the new O'Scope in the mail :) Funny because I'm pretty much to the point where I don't think I'll need it now. But whatever, it's a good little tool to have!

Well one last glitch I've been trying to work out is cranking. Sometimes it starts a little rough. While troubleshooting last night, the car just shut off and wouldn't restart. Narrowed it down to loss of spark.
Shane was nice enough to lend me the coil and ignitor off his SC300. Turns out my ignitor died. New one from a parts store is 300-400 bucks :( So looks like I'll be checking the local junk yards :D Big thanks to Shane for lending me the stuff! Also, it looks like DB's dyno schedule is a bit busy, so I may opt to not get it tuned before doing the turbo, since it does seem to be running fairly well overall as-is. Bolted the turbo up to the mani today just to see if there is any clearance issues with the compressor housing hitting the manifold. It clears like this, so this is prolly how it will end up being aimed. I also put one picture showing it clocked to the point that it hits the #1 runner. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301527070 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301527070 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301527070 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301527070 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301527070 |
Re: Project Lex
Looking sweet. Are you going to ceramic coat the mani? Or have the welds reinforced by someone at all? Polish the compressor cover? Turbo blanket? Since you have to take the cams out to put the new head studs in anyways, are you doing cams or just leaving stock ones? NOZZZ?

The welds, I was planning on leaving it as-is. Might be a good idea to have a local shop look it over quick though just to see what they think. Compressor cover, I think I'll be leaving it as-is for now. But it'd be nice to get it polished in the future. Turbo blanket is definately something I've been considering. It's already coated from Primo, but having a blanket as well wouldn't hurt I'd think. And knowing me, I'll probably go find the cheapest one that can be over-nighted from Chiiiyynahh. Cams, I'm staying stock for now. Reason being is I really like a nice idle now a days. So I want to change as little is possible. Once I get it running good turboed on stock cams, then I'll consider dropping in some better cams. I haven't even researched them yet so no clue what I'll get at this point. And definately no Naaawwwsss :) I'm scared of that sh!t. Quote:

Re: Project Lex
Worked on the cranking issue I had today. I changed some of my noise filtering settings and hopefully everything will work a little better now. For fun, here's a couple screen shots from my new USB O'scope. I tried using the logic analyzer but wasn't succeeding. But this is the O-Scope signal. Kinda cool :)
While Cranking, you can see everything increase as you crank and it starts up. http://msextra.com/forums/download/file.php?id=17986 Close up of the first crank pulse upon cranking. You can see I measured it's time and it measured 11us. http://msextra.com/forums/download/file.php?id=17987 |

Well, the time has come... Turbo Time !!
I parked her in the driveway. Cleaned out the garage where she'll be parked for the next couple months. Jacked her up and gave her a good underbody cleaning/degreasing before starting work. http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301777105 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301777105 Parked and up on jack stands http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301777105 The parts stash that I've been slowly accumulating over the past few months. Finally get to put them to use :) http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301777105 http://mitsustyle.com/forums/attachm...1&d=1301777105 |

Got to spend a couple hours on her this evening. Here's where she sits today. TB is almost off, but there's one coolant hose on the IM side still hooked to it that seems to be a little tricky...

Exhaust and Intake side are torn down as far as I think I'm going to go. There seem to be so many random sensors all over the place, I'm wondering if they are all needed at this point?

That intake manifold can go to hell. http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/att...1&d=1301865268 Big thanks to brownman for helping for a little bit. Also we got an idea. Stock mani's upside down fit perfect, so decided to go a different route. Got a line on some SBR 50 trims, should be sick! http://www.mitsustyle.com/forums/att...1&d=1301865715 |

However I think that mod will come next year. But for the right price, I'd consider getting one now and just keeping it on the shelf. Otherwise I've been pondering the idea of just building my own since they all seem to be ridiculously priced (at least $800 for just the plenum). |
