WTF did they start making the front covers out of gold? I swear when I built my 6 bolt it was only like $100. I just checked on Maps site and the 7 bolt is over $400. I'll part the fucker before I pay that much for a oil pump.

I took the head apart today, so that means more carnage pics.

I'm starting to get discouraged. I just keep finding more and more things that are going to cost money.

This is the combustion chamber of the cylinder that dropped the valve.

Bent valves I think these are the intake valves from cly. 4
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...pseoeprvxn.jpg

wear on the cam journals I'm starting to think I might have had a oiling issue some time before the rod went . hopefully these can be polished but I'm not getting my hopes up.
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...psxmcpfa6x.jpg

E85 "black goo" build up only on the cly that the rod blew. I think this might have been the cause of the failure.
http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...pstsu6u0mv.jpg

you can see all the other injectors are clean except #2 that blew.

"black goo" build up in #2 intake port but not #1

That damn goo, wonder what oems do on their flex fuel cars to address that.

Black goo. Bleh. That's lame as hell. Is it just me or does the lobe on the left in picture three look odd? The lines in it. Almost looks like a crack. I'm sure it isn't but yikes.

I usually get my fuel from the same station and switch back to regular gas at the end of the season and Ive never had a problem before. last year I didnt switch back and this is what I found.

The lobe was scratched from when I tossed a rocker last year. I buffed it out and figured it was good to go since it runs on the roller.

DSMINMN, lets just say you were back in school . can you quote me a price on doing the head with all new valves , guides and 2 new seats? I can tale care of the damage to the combustion chamber .

It should be fine since it is a scratch. Granted I was in school and had the time you're looking at around $200 before driving down to get it and/or delivery. As well as assuming you supply the valves, guides, seats seals and such. It also depends on what type of guides you want to use. If they're bronze the price would reflect it because after knocking the new ones in you have to hone them and that takes a little bit of time.

Carl, there's also a pretty affordable head place in Andover called Northern Cylinder Head. You could try giving them a buzz. They did lots of work for me and my buddy back in the day, extremely reasonable prices.

There's also Headwerks in Bloomington. They do amazing work on everything and anything.

Tim zimmer has been telling me about a cleaner he has been running in his ethanol. I forget the brand but he says it's like magic at preventing buildup and does an awesome job cleaning also he says he rarely sees a change in afrs. .1/.2 at most. I'm deff going to give it a try as I also believe the goo can clog injectors or cause bad spray patterns. Hell I had to send my 2150 to fic because two won't even open to clean them. Also I may have some spare head parts. I have a spare 1g head but I assume you are running a 2g

Manhattan oil
Top lube
Part # 19769
Tim says he used grape I believe that's
Part # 19769-31
Says it smells super good like a mix of blue 110 and e85 obviously. They make multiple cents for experimentation of fuel smell. He says your eyes don't burn quite as bad either. This post=win

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

I haven't updated in a while. I got a smoking deal on a 2g head last week so I'm getting excited to get this thing back together. I also picked up the oil pump with balance shaft elimination posted above. I think all i have left to buy for it is a gasket set and a baffle plate.

I got the head from a guy off of craigslist. he was playing the normal craigslist games and being a pain in my ass not being very descriptive and no price. I was getting pissed and texted turbotalon1g that if this guy tells me to make a offer I'm going to say $25. I did, fully exspecting him to tell me to get fucked but instead he replied "if you come get it tonight" so I jumped in the car .

The head is pretty clean some carbon build up and looks like 1 bent exhaust valve. I plan on replacing the valve seals and relapping the valves and running it.

$25 head

Not really anything new I've heard of. But since I'm auto I'm not to worried about it.

They are studs. I don't know if it is something that mitsubishi did on the 95-96 heads or something the previousowner did. My valve cover didn't seam to fit over them so I pulled them out.

So how much trouble do you guys think I'll get in if I put the head in the dishwasher??

Just make sure to bake off any remaining grime on it in the oven right after :)

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

The studs are for the black Hyundai valve cover. They are a thicker valve cover that does not crack. I have them in the Spyder and evo.

last weekend I fixed some strut tower rust that has been bothering me for a while. I cut the rust out on the seam and welded in some new sheet metal. I haven't taken any pictures of it painted but it looks a lot better then it did.

Today I got the whole short block assembled. I just need to finish up my head and throw it on and time it and it will be ready to drop in.

Does anyone have a valve spring compressor I could borrow to put the valves in. none of mine are working so I called it a day.

here are the only pics I took of todays progress.
