Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Pump install is done.
Picking up turbo, manifold and downpipe tomorrow from MAP. They just got back from being all ported/coated. Also they have a bunch of OEM stuff that has gone missing through switching setups so much, oil feed line, return line, water feed, return etc and a bunch of gaskets and banjo bolts and what not. I am out of town this weekend for memorial day but I am hoping the next weekend I will get to doing the install, maybe at least get the intake mani/tb and exhaust stuff buttoned up. Hopefully start tuning by the 2nd week in June. PS. If anyone is bored and wants to help get the x off murlostands you are welcome to come :) I'll be grilling out and beers/booze is always provided. Targeting Saturday 31st right now. Maybe start at 11am or so. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

If anything, if I get bored, I think it will be time to part ways with the car and move onto something v8 powered. |

Also, I'm confused on "they" are missing stuff, are those parts you need to source yet? Good luck getting it back together and tuned. And the grass is always greener, you'll find downsides to every platform :) |

Sorry for the crappy photo. Made great progress today. I got my fuel pump finally actually into the car and rewired that (hardwired) and cleaned up the routing etc. Also got all the intake side stuff on, mani, tb and fuel system etc. Just need to order some nuts/bolts and few soft lines and hopefully one more install session and we will be starting the evo! |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Would love to see this thing back on the road soon!
:seeya: |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
So a bunch of the OEM stuff was backordered so I didn't get it back together last week. Anyway, that stuff showed up this week:
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps5g65np6n.jpg Then this showed up today, the final piece, Greddy FMIC (shiny, I like it haha): http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psxjfwgfwv.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psn6a9qjum.jpg Maybe I am mis-remembering but this seems quite a bit beefier than my AMS core, dunno. Anyway, it looks awesome and should work nicely. Getting close, can't wait to drive this again finally. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Greddy is usually tube/fin design where AMS was probably bar/plate. Parts are good, get that thing together!

Trying to get it running again, just zero time with work and travel for work and then cabin time with the gf. My buddy has my turbo/manifold, he brought it to his dealer this week to assemble it with proper studs. He said he might help out and stop by and toss the turbo/mani in, so that would really help. Then its downpipe, exhaust, new FMIC, piping and intake and few odds and ends (oil change, coolant top off etc) then base map for new injectors and start. So close, yet so far . |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Nice looking intercooler! I'm sure it is much beefier than the AMS, the AMS FMIC is mid-sized I'd call it. The GReddy and AGP are the big boys of Evo X intercoolers.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Almost done:
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psppp3nitd.jpg We got started late yesterday, but I did put in my new kozmic catch can with the revised drain, so I can remote drain it. And then we found out MAP gave me the wrong banjo bolts for the water return/feed to the turbo so thankfully the dealer had them but that took a while. Then we removed a bunch of shit to be able to put the turbo/manifold in there at once. Anyway, we made good progress and got all the "hard" shit on there and now its just buttoning it up. I will tackle this throughout the week, a good chunk of it. So hopefully in the next two weeks I will be driving it. July 4th weekend is kind of a throw away so hopefully the following week is startup. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Nice! Glad you found the parts. You're close now, throw down and fire this hog up!
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Very nice!!
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Lookin' good! You're almost there dude.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Getting there for sure, look forward to having some low end grunt again. 750whp+ is fun and all but for street driving just putting around town, low end is nice.
I am going to work on this over the long weekend. I will get the IC installed, run IC piping, install intake, re-run boost/vac lines as they are all messed up now, install bov and maybe a few other misc items. Just going to pick away at it. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
The gf is out of town this weekend at her aunt/uncles for her annual mother/daughter trip so I have all weekend to do anything I want without interruption. So I figured I mind as well work on the evo, going to start soon. Not doing anything at work but surfing the internet so I figure I mind as well go home and take a cat nap then start working on the car.
Question: How can I tell if my TB is lock-tited? It's installed now, but for some reason I am paranoid. MAP did it and I am sure they put loc-tite on it but can i see that from the inlet side or no? I was just reading another old thread on evoM and there was a bunch of TB's that were ported that had this issue (can't remember what brand, buschur maybe) of people losing motors to stupid tb plates coming loose. If I can't tell from the outside, I will just ask map if they do it and assume they did as I don't want to uninstall. Just curious if you should be able to see it from the inlet side as I haven't put my LICP on yet. Anyway, I will update this weekend with progress. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
You'll see a little colored (likely blue) residue on the exposed threads of the screw on the backside of the throttle plate. You can push it open by hand, the spring will return it shut once you let it go.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I'll try to check when I get home then. And snap some pics if there is doubt.
Thank you sir. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Sure. Text me a pic if you need help.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Blue? Hmmm... Mitsu uses red. And I wouldn't trust blue.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I just want to make sure there is at least something! Blue, red, whatever. Just something and confirm its correct with MAP.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Got the SOB in now! This IC was a pain to figure out. The instructions were in japanese and it didn't mount like stock or like my AMS IC. I had to remove some brackets that weren't used and remove the crash beam and wiring harness to get it in.
It should've been obvious to me, but these instructions suck. It clicked once I got the stupid bracket under the condenser out. All buttoned up, harness back in, crash beam back on and just need to run IC piping to it now :) Getting closer. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psa3e12b0b.jpg |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps6licdc6v.jpg
Sorry for bad picture. Also, ignore stock IC piece, they were sold out of the other piece and I am waiting for stock to be replenished. Only a few hours away from starting this hog. Exhaust in on, hood is back on, wiper assembly dealy back on, IC done, IC pipes on. Just have intake, bov, 3 port, vacuum hose routing, oil fill, coolant top off and it's ready to go. Big thanks to Simulatedwood, Shawn is the man. Came over and helped pound out a bunch of crap. While I was picking up bigger clamps at the store he went ahead and installed a bunch of bushings for me, the AMS shifter ones and gate selector ones. I've had them for like 4 years now and never installed them. He said they are like the best mod ever haha. Anyway, going to try and start this tonight I think! |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Well made the push tonight...car is back together, oil is in, went to start...no go.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps506f1178.jpg I have fuel pressure at the rail, that was confirmed. My guess is bad gas? The e85 in there has been in there for 13 months or so now, for a time it wasn't air tight as well, so maybe lots of crap in gas? Thoughts? Drain tank and fill with good new e85? |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Is it sputtering in an attempt to fire? I've started cars that have sat about that long with E85 in the tank.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

I haven't checked spark yet though, so that is on my list as well. But I am going to get new E85 in there tonight to see if that is the problem. It's an easy check. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
So it just turns over, never even hiccups like it wants to start? Yeah check spark for sure. Could also be the injectors not firing.
|

I think I had this issue with my first motor build as well. Could be the same one. There is like an AC plug and an alternator one that are the same I think or something weird that causes this. If I remember DB spent hours trying to figure out why the car wouldn't fire. I will check that out tonight too. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I mentioned this on EvoMN, but did you flash a base ROM? Check immo settings, or just turn it off to be sure. I ran into a "this should be right but it doesn't work" situation on a buddy's car last month.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
It starts! Xfonts came over with some good luck and helped me push through. It turned out the battery just wasn't charged up enough. Throw the charger on there and it was drawing 15 amps. Gave it like 10 mins of charging and it started slow but fired up pretty quick.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psa1f581eb.mp4 But found this (see below) after a few minutes of idle and also found that the car was running hot and realized that i forgot to add coolant to it. So probably air in the system from changing out the turbo and TB. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps29b7e05d.jpg So Friday my buddy is coming over to replace the following: #11 from here: http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps6f77d874.jpg #28 from here: http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psd7c038f2.jpg So Friday, I should be able to drive it around hopefully :) |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Is it leaking bad from the waterpump elbow? Odd that it would start doing that all of a sudden. Still, easy easy fix, external water pump FTW :)
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Not leaking bad, no. Just a bit. But after like 5-6 minutes of idle there was a small puddle, so needs to be dealt with. Yea looking at it I don't think it will be too bad. Ordering up some gaskets and putting new gaskets in with sealant on them Friday. then all should be good after burping the coolant system.
Then put undertray and bumper on and last wheel back on and drive! |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
So got the car's coolant leak fixed, yay. No more leaks, fluids anyway.
Found out my basically brand new 200 dollar battery is dead. I think my trickle charger must of killed it, no idea how but ya, no more leaving stuff on that. Also, worse, found air leak on the intake manifold. It looks to be coming from the sealing surface between the head and intake mani, we could get the car to stumble by blowing compressed air there, so pretty sure. I am using one of those MAP pheno-whatever (plastic) intake gaskets. I just had my intake mani ported in between last year and this so my thought is they cleaned up the mating surface and now it doesn't seal the same way it did before. So, going to probably just order a stock intake gasket and then also a new battery this week and hopefully I can drive it this next weekend, we shall see. Now just debating on a lithium battery or the pc625 or whatever. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I have one of those phenolic spacers if you want it; uses stock gaskets on either side of it but they work great.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I think I am just going to use the stock one and say F it. Thanks though bud. I will let you know if I need it.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
The orange/brown ones require an OEM gasket on either side of it to seal properly; I do not like this design as it is more prone to leaking. The white ones do not require a gasket as they have a slight amount of squish to them (these are what I've used and recommend). I know people will claim otherwise, but I consider these to be single-use only like most other types of gaskets.
