Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
With a MAF setup, it's plenty easy to mess up an intake, as ETS clearly demonstrated on the 8/9.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Gotcha, well as far as I know many people have had success with their products on the X and their intake has always seemed to work well.
Edit: Also, Jon (aka my tuner) said to go with this intake. He said it flows better and just works better. So I guess ETS is out all together. http://www.maperformance.com/aq-moto...shi-evo-x.html |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
All parts have now been ordered. Looks like the porting/coating stuff with MAP will be the bottleneck. I am hoping to have the car running by end of May.
I also changed from the AGP IC to the Greddy one per a recommendation from my tuner. But ID1300's should be here this week and my fuel pump stuff is in stock at MAP. My new IC piping arrived today and my new stock turbo/manifold arrives tomorrow and will drop all that off at MAP thursday/friday. Quesiton, my E85 that is in my tank has been there since last July sometime. Should I drain this or is it ok to run the car with this until I burn through it just idling and cruising? I have no idea where I would dump the fuel if I needed to do that but that is another question. Anyway, this weekend I am going to put the fuel pump back together and install the new AEM 320. Then I am going to start hooking up my new gauges in my new gauge pod and also work on the ethanol content sensor and the zietronix. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I'd definitely drain the 9 month old gas out of there.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
It's fine for low-load operation. Dump a bottle of fuel cleaner/additive in with it to make sure your new injectors don't get gummy.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Nice looking intercooler too. I didn't know GReddy even had a kit for the Evo X. What did it cost? Retail is $$$.

I paid 785, bought it through Jon. He said the flow on it is awesome and it looks cool with the dual channel deal. So is there a special e85 additive I can use for this purpose? And seems like Halon said drain, should I drain or do the additive and then just cruise around town to drain it? I just don't know what to do with the fuel once I drain it. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
9 months old isn't too bad as long as your system is sealed, especially if your tank is closer to full than empty; it'll sometimes sit in tanks and railcars longer than that :)
Lucas makes a special E85 additive, or you should be fine getting some Chevron Techron. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
It should be sealed pretty well. There were some holes in the cover of the fuel pump assembly that had connectors in them that I covered with electrical tape. But otherwise I bolted the cover back down with the gasket on there.
I will try just throwing in the additive and see how it runs, if its missing I will drain the tank. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Car parts day! yay! Never thought I'd be happy to see a stock turbo, but sure enough the thought of my car running again makes me happy. Time to see what we can get out of this little guy.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps1faa014f.jpg New IC pipes showed up too. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
It's tough to judge what your thought process was for the de-evolution in power, the twin scroll PTE was boss...Enough and sorry for the negativity, I bet it will be nice to get it back on the street!

However, I decided it was time to get my finances in life straight. Being single with no house was easy to justify the stupid spending on the racecar. But when I got a steady gf and a house, I was really strapped for cash spending money on the evo. So I decided to just let it rest a bit and wanted to sell off some stuff to pay off debt. Now I am in much better shape, just my house and a car payment for my dd for debt! No more silly 0% stuff for car parts or what not. Also now have a savings account and starting to add stuff to 401k, so much much better off financially. It did suck making the decision to demod the evo and go to half the power (no power right now) but in the grand scheme it was smart for me. I am also working on refinancing and after that I will be doing a deck, sprinkler system, new sod, black dirt and landscaping hopefully. Trying to spread the love to other stuff in life besides the evo. I will get back to it though, don't worry :) And in the meantime I will enjoy the stock turbo. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Anyone know what Buschur uses for their exhaust clamps?
This is what it looks like (see below). Mine were rusted and snapped the bolts last year so I want to replace it with new ones. http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps55ae920b.jpg Bill at MAP sent me these links: http://vibrantperformance.com/catalo...1022_1070_1132 http://vibrantperformance.com/catalo...products_id=62 The first one they don't have a 3" for some reason. And I have no idea what the difference is between the first style and the second one. I am thinking of just going with the second one, it looks right to me. Thoughts? |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
The first one looks closer to what you have in the picture. I've bought those at NAPA before, I can't remember what diameter they were though. Might be worth checking some local exhaust shops first
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Sounds like busch nuts will sell these to MAP for like 20 bucks. So I am just going to buy them from him so I know I am getting the right ones even though I am sure you are right and NAPA or someone probably has something. But 20 bucks seems reasonable.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Silly Buschnuts and his crappy diesel truck parts... Like the semi-truck radiator hose he cuts up and calls intercooler couplers
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Go to the parts store they are well under 20.00 each.

Design won't matter one bit, if the pipe is round it will hold it on there all the same, unless you have square exhaust piping? You wanna be smarter financially? Start by stop over spending. ;) http://www.amazon.com/Dynomax-33230-...+exhaust+clamp |

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Thanks Spaz, looks like those are in stock near my house. I will go there then.
I never buy these, wasn't aware they were readily available everywhere, my bad. Thanks for the heads up guys. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Had to get some 3" clamps like this for the Vette when I put in a Z06 exhaust, went to napa and they were under $10 each. Worked perfect.
Or I have two of those clamps pictured in 2.5" but the bolts should work for 3" if you want to reuse what you have. Free, I'll give them to someone on the cruise so you don't have to pay for shipping even. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
The oriely ones are like 10 bucks, I'll just pick them up tonight from there on my way home. Thanks for the offer though Andrew, I appreciate it.
I am planning to work on the car this weekend quite a bit so I would rather just get them now. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
The bolts on that old clamp look like they were made from standard Buschur grade SS as well.

The exhaust was like 850 bucks too. thankfully the tips still look new and the piping itself has held up. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
The nicest stainless Buschur sells is the rebranded Chinese eBay o2 housings, the rest of his crap is either mild steel or 409SS which rusts pretty badly after a salty winter. My Buschur clamps were trash after 1 winter/10k miles on my IX.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Dropped my turbo and exhaust manifold off at MAP yesterday for porting/coating. Then picked up these.
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps78d9f9f9.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps1b1d5a97.jpg Anyone else used the ID1300's? It came with pins and plugs and it looks like I need to solder them on. I am Ok with doing that, although I prefer not to. Just curious if I could get drop in ones so I don't have to. Anyway, working on my fuel pump install today. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Yeah I looked into them for my 8 I thought they have the plug and play adapters for them
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Ya those clamps are available everywhere, kinda nice it uses parts that are readily available honestly...been there on the rust though.
What's with the fuel pump I see lying there? Seems to say DW on it... :) ID1300's, interesting. Not sure on the soldering of pins, that seems goofy. Good luck! |

I am going to check with MAP to see about getting me the PnP adapters, think they forgot them. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Get the ID PnP harnesses...do NOT get the FIC ones.

He is getting me some this week though I think, so problem solved, no soldering for now. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Got the ID PnP adapters yesterday and have the exhaust clamps as well ready to install.
Also got this from MAP. Turbo inspected great! The only thing it needed was some seals and re-balance which we already did. Everything else checked out perfect! No need for bearings, thrust washer or any housings. So the used turbo looked good I guess and is ready to rock. Sounds like it just needs coating so should be here end of next week I am hoping along with my manifold and downpipe and then its just time for install and tuning. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Downpipe is done, manifold will be done porting next monday/tuesday I think and then the following monday/tuesday the turbo, manifold and downpipe will be ready for pickup. Woo.
Working on the pump right now, but missing some pieces. See this: http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...psd628aded.jpg I sold the connector last year with my wally 400. Does anyone have a part number for something similar at like Napa or something? Hopefully I don't get in trouble for asking this ;) I'll probably head there tomorrow to poke around but figured I would ask as a a lot of you guys are quick with finding these things. Here is the rough size: http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...ps3e2923e2.jpg Once I get this piece I can finish up the pump install and start in on intake mani next weekend I hope along with TB fuel rail and injectors etc. |

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
If you're just referring to thst black cord grip they may have them at acme in golden valley
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Sorry, yes I meant cord grip (headslap), not connector. Sorry, was a little sauced up last night working on the car when i posted haha.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I'd search electronic stores like acme or radio shack. Otherwise Grainger or McMaster or any other online electronic component place would have them available to ship.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
This is what i was looking for, its what I had before and sold with my pump setup.
Ordered! http://www.summitracing.com/parts/abt-cfd-504/overview/ Now once that comes in I can finish up the pump install. |
