Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic
I haven't updated this in a while. Over the winter I had the transmission out to replace the forward drum and clutch pack the were bad. Yesterday I took the car out to test the transmission so that I could trust the car for some longer drives this weekend. I drove it around for a while and the transmission was working great. I went into town and put in $20 in fresh E85. I took some nice backroads home and was getting on it pretty good coming out of corners. the car felt pretty good so I made a 2nd gear pull. it pulled good till close to redline when the check engine light flashed. I knew I was getting some knock so I let off. I stopped at a stop sign so I desided to log a pull and see what was up. I turned the corner and floored it. As soon as the turbo spooled it went BOOOM!!!
I'll let the pictures tell the rest of the story. http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...psgttkfwjp.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...pse6qmmfjp.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...psf489f6qt.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...psoh5jpncj.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...psjeqcijjb.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...pshq0uy56w.jpg I'm not sure where I'm going from here. I will be looking for a replacement engine, but I haven't decided if I'll go fully built or just another stock 2g 7bolt. It will probly come down to what is available for what I can afford. |
Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic
Sucks man :( If it were me I'd probably just find another 7-bolt and throw it in. Seems like the simplest, cheapest, quickest way to get it back out so you can atleast enjoy it this summer.

I was logging at the time but after it blew I turned the key off and slammed the laptop closed. Here's what it says when I try to open the log. under statement to say the least.

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic
On Saturday my daughter and I made the drive up to Grand Rapids to buy the Built short block from Dark2g. The motor looks great. He and his friends were really cool and have a nice shop to work out of. it was really nice meeting you guys.
Yesterday I finally got the old motor out of the car, and disassembled. Its not good so far I think the only parts I've found that are reusable are the cams, oil pickup tube, and the piece that goes around the rear main seal. So at this point I'm in need of 2G head front cover / oil pump oil pan baffle plate http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...pspna5ow78.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...pscwdwre46.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...psgsk1gga0.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...pspwosi1dk.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...pswtstqoov.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...psm9nrc67y.jpg http://i1124.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7qx8ag4r.jpg |
Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic
we agree fun meeting you as well. I will take a look in the garage tomorrow and see if we have any parts to help you out for sure. I assume andre had an oil pan to give you. idk i'll deff check though. Also I would not feel comfortable reusing the pickup tube but thats me. I also hope the tubo is ok.

Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic
Holy epic carnage pics batman! Thank you for sharing!
My favorite part is the rod impressions on the baffle bolted under the crank, you can see how it just bounced bounced bounced its way across there and then kabam out the side of the pan :D |
Re: Carl's 98 auto AWD project Black Magic
If you're going to break something, do it big. I think you win. :D
