Re: 91 Galant VR4
I doubt it will be dyno ready for the spring dyno day, 59 days away. I would like to have it up and running under its own power by then, but dyno ready will be pushing it. Then its track ready before I worry about putting the power down on a dyno day. Besides the last time I tried this dance I was smoked by some white evo anyways.

I will be making slide in bolt trays for the front and fire wall mounts. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_13343.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_13341.jpg Let me get in there and just pull the tranny real quick like. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_13340.jpg Swifty, this pic is for you. There should be more to come in the next few days. I have compiled a list of parts needed to make this the record breaking car that it should be. Thanks for looking. ~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Sooooooo bomb john!! Awesome project
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
haha, You might need to be able to pull the tranny a few times making this kind of power. Looking good man, is this just the mock-up motor yet?
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Fucking badass, lets get this thing rolling!!
A lot of records are getting set this year so do it up! I remember this thing a few years back at the shop I can't believe how far it has come, also how far it has come since the pics I saw of it when you first had it. |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Are you doing straight cut gears with this car?
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
It would need a dog box at its full potential for sure. I will start out with a shep stage 4 or equal and see how far it will go. This is just a mock up motor the real deal will be home soon and I will just get it up and running with a regular tranny and the clutch I had before. Then save up cash needed for the tranny and clutch situation to get worked out.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
Thanks for the pic, looks like you will clear everything just fine under there. I am curious as to it's conditions soon. You thinking about doing the sequential shifter setup at all? There was one on talk a while ago that was for sale for like 1200. Just all the brackets, shifter, etc. looked pretty slick..
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Standard hand and foot shifting for me. If I did anything else it would be the auto trans.
~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Auto baby oh yeah!

Re: 91 Galant VR4
wow. amazing work man. Every time I look at the engine bay, I forget it's a GVR4 lol!

http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_14005.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_14004.jpg The 4 pins for the trunk lid and installed and the heights set. The 2 in the back fit nice under the wing and its easy to slide on and off for filling up, battery or fuel pump service or filling the nitrous bottle. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_14006.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_14009.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_14013.jpg Now with the trunk lid off the break lights and license plate area are mounted to the chassis and just the trunk lid and wing come off. I have a little more lining up and finish work back here. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_14017.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_14018.jpg Here is the trunk lid down to the basics. I also added 2 braces on the rear deck lid. Also the front hood pin locations are fabricated, now I just need a hood to install. http://www.mickeythompsontires.com/s.../50R15&type=SS Here are the tires I want to run on all 4 corners. Now I just need to find a wheel to fit a 4 x 114.3 bolt patter and be 15" x 8" wide. Enkei RPF1 or similar. ~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
I think I just pooped myself.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Nawwzz!!!! lol
Only 8" tires? I guess I figured you would need wider for the kind of power you will put down. But hey I'm sure you know waaay more than me haha |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
The rim is 8", the tire tread is 10.5".
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Amazing work as usual.

I have thought of doing the 5 lug conversion, if the rims become an issue I will switch over.

I've also heard good things about the QTP's for tires john.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
the 17421 or the 17500 would work. I would have to run tubes but thats not a big deal.

And the hood can be removed for easy work or can be pulled off with the front clip for bigger jobs. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_15010.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_15011.jpg I boxed in the upper frame rail to the unibody structure, this will help make the front end as strong as possible. Just a little more clean up and a few more welds, then its onto painting before the motor goes back in for finish assembly. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_15008.jpg This strip of aluminum replaces the 2lb stock blob of metal, and this does the same job but is a 1/4 of the weight. This is the rear subframe front mount to the body. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_15006.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_15007.jpg The rear bumber cover is back on, I have some tabs on the top underside lip, then the plate in the middle that holds the bottom up. Now just a few more rivits and brackets in the wheel well area and the back of the car is done minus the rear window. It is getting closer, we will be painting this weekend, then build the dash and start to lay out the wiring. ~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
I realized the other night that I rode in this car back when it had no interior and two seats. We did a pull on 694 with Ryan in his green Galant VR4. Kind of surreal seeing it take on this transformation.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
I'm also thinking your wheel selection will be much better with a five lug conversion but you never know, there might be some out there.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
That rear subframe aluminum piece looks scary, is that really gonna help?
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
The aluminum strip is 3/16" thick and tomorrow I will add spacers to hold the sub frame tight up to the body mount. The stock unit is 1/16" steel and just has what looks like a big washer welded to it to make it as big as the sub frame. But the stock unit tightens down on the center sleave thus not making contact with the sub frame itself.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
Looking good dude! I love the hood design, that it can come off with the front clip or by itself.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
We have decided to paint all the high traffic areas mat black, and the interior a grey color, the exterior will remain summit white. The idea is to keep the engine bay and trunk looking cleaner.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
That's one big ass list, looks real nice though, cant wait to see it run.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Why a cometic headgasket? Why not a Felpro permatorque or whatever. All the HIGH hp guys are running that with L19s and love it.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Wow, that's quite the mod list! I hope I get the chance to see this run down the track sometime!
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
I bought this gasket 6 years ago. It seemed to hold up fine last time it ran. The engine did not push coolant. If the gasket does not work out I will buy the Felpro, again I am starting low on the power and this should hold for a while.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
That engine bay looks amazing painted.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
This thing is really shaping up John, do you have an ETA on when you expect it to be done?
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
I can't wait to see this, I'm loving all this crazy build stuff I'm seeing lately.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
The ETA on going down the track is riding on getting the cash together to finish it up. I made the list of stuff still needed for this, and its kind of a big number, a little less then I was thinking though. It might just get up and running enough to drive around, but no track duty for a while, I hope this race season it can show a little of what it can do.
