Re: team ab drag race and street builds

Well we went to Wednesday night drags last night and it was fun as shit. Met Aaron and saw him and Andre make an easy 20 passes between them. Unfortunately for Andre as soon as he started trying to make good passes to get the boot we lost the wideband. It stayed at 14.8 the entire time no matter what I did to the fuel, and also had cut out at 7k rpm that we thought could be spark blowout. Turns out we eventually figured out what was wrong after his last pass he came to the parking lot stressed out. You could hear the knock when he pulled up. Damn, strange thing is the closer he got the more it sounded like an exhaust leak. So we popped the hood and started it. Damn doesn't sound like knock at all more like bad tick from back of the motor and yup there's the problem, the heat barrier intake manifold gasket was melted by the number 4 cylinder letted egr out and air in. Wow what a relief. Hopefully nothing melted in and it will be a simple fix. Explains why we had horrible idle issues and the car just kept getting slower. Could that be why the wideband shit? Most likely. Absolutely no knock in any of the pulls with a best of 11.2@135 1.8 60ft. Not exactly what he was after but with a broken car it's not too bad. All in all we all had fun and it was very fun seeing those two line up against each other over and over. I have some pretty good vids I will post up later.

135 is a helluva trap for a car having problems.

Nice to meet you guys, the car looks clean.

I think we both learned what shakedown passes are yesterday, boy were they fun.
Good luck next time!

I agree that's a hell of a trap. Glad the problem was nothing major.

It was a pretty good time, shaking some bugs out for sure. It almost seems the half radiator is not even functioning? It's not that bad but making multiple passes was requiring us to let the car cool down more then what I am used to for sure. Anyone have any thoughts as in if the 16an line is to much restriction for the system to flow at full rate or something?
Also anyone have anyone referral to a shop for welding a cage in my car? I can tig weld a little but am not gonna pretend I can do a cage and want to have it done right.

To add the 16an line is the black braided line, and it seems to be getting hot and crushing. HELP US

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

Ok it's been a while since I've contributed to the thread so the short and sweet of it is it seems like we will be bringing 4 dsm's to pg2 this year. Things could change obviously, but I think we have a good running car for just about each class. Should be a good time if all works out.

Good work!!!!!! By looking at the slip there's room for improvement!

62mm class at PG2 should have a lot of people in it.
Should be interesting:cheer:

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

^ most definitely there is room. Since we had so much issue with spark blowout and not being able to keep the temps down Andre fabbed up a duct that uses the outside hole in the 2gb bumper going to the radiator which has been working perfect at keeping those temps down. Also he decided it was time to get the Dynatec ignition system and a cop to keep good healthy spark as he wasn't able to go above 27psi without spark blowout @7k rpm. As long as the car likes it we will push 40psi to 9k plus.

My car has been maxed @21 psi with a 13.5 wastegate spring and the light halman boost controller spring as I lost the heavy spring. I just got the small blue spring for the wastegate and that should get me close to 29psi. I've shifted at 9k like butter so I will push it a bit higher to gain some spool time and I will get a heavy halman spring if it's not fast enuf.

Jessie's car is @30psi with low timing just for a starter tune and if he wants we will add some timing to get more desired results. He and I went frum a 2nd gear roll and it was damn close. If I didn't have the Rpms he would have me for sure. That little s256 is a very bad ass turbo for sure.

Guys car is @17 psi on a gas tune pretty much maxing the injectors out so until he gets bigger injectors that's about where he sits. 2.4 is such a beast though. I have days where I miss mine....

Nice, even if I don't race sounds like there will be some nice cars there to put on a show.

can you share some pictures of the ducting. I've been trying to keep my AC functional without over heating, and this sounds like just what I need.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

I'm assuming this won't help u since I tucked my half radiator in front of the passenger tire in the bumper but this is how I did it. Fiberglass all the way around. The pic only shows when I first started. Just molded everything as close as I could to bumper and added a fan pulling to help the pusher. Seems to work great so far.
http://i271.photobucket.com/albums/j...s/image-16.jpg

Side not, got the ignition setup brand new.
Got it all hooked up and car started for like 10 seconds and just shut instantly off. I checked the fuse and it's fine. The dynatec still has a power light but no spark to coils. Assuming something internally failed. Probably gonna have to just order another if I wanna have any fun with lots of boost at pg. Otherwise it's gonna be a 28lbs is where my stock coils are blowing out. Does anyone happen to know if I cut the 98 down that this might not happen if I can't get this resolved?

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

Update on Andres car. So turns out we had to tune without ignition box. We were getting the same b.s spark blowout around 7k Rpms and 30psi, so I figured what the hell there is no knock maybe I'll throw some more timing at it and now I feel dumb for not trying it sooner. I guess I assumed with that much boost I would keep timing low. The car loves the timing I added and no more spark blowout. It's around 35-36 ish psi, I forgot to look and 22 deg of timing up top. We also dialed in the launch on the street. Being the car was around 27-30 psi with 11 ish deg of timing shifting around 7k and ran a 11.2 @135 I would assume the car should make a fast pass now with all the changes and a 9k shift.

Hell yeah, the car has more in it for sure, but Andre was excited where it was at so that's as far as I got with it.

Sucks I never was able to get a cage built in time. Just gonna work on some launching and probably throw down 1 good run and I am assuming I will get the boot for safety requirement failure. Still looking for someone to build me one. I might try bring a different toy on Sunday that I picked up if I can get it ready in the next few days or at least ready enough. I will be getting down there on early Saturday.

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

This may be stupid but are you guys tuning on a dyno? I didnt read the whole thread but if you're using e85 and road tuning it is possible to go past MBT on E85 without getting knock

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

Aaron I think I may have mentioned to u the night we were at Brainerd. Hint is that it has no pistons. Just been working so much on a massive project I have had very little time to play. Only started it essentially to move It around the garage and to try figure out the power fc and dataloggit. I think nick has a pretty good grasp on it now but that system blows IMO either way.

Thanks for the tip wood. We were considering it to some extent. E98 and street pulls Something to keep in mind for sure.

As some of you have seen I posted the car up for sale. Don't be surprised if I end up keeping it but we will see.

Agree, enjoy it, otherwise you built it for someone else's benifit. A 2 door is faster than 4 doors...

Re: team ab drag race and street builds

Thanks for the support guys. I just want to have a more friendly family hauler, and one that's still fast and cool. If I keep it another year I will have a hard time letting it go because I am thinking about driveline stuff and at that point I'll be getting near that 30k range.
