The truck has also been picked up two Sundays ago I believe to be fixed. I don't have the time nor do I have the patients to fix it. Besides the lack of tools, help and money; most important. |
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Well, this is really all I have for you guys. Work hasn't been hella' busy but I have been with other stupid things. Working on other people's cars, wasting money on fixing my Colt. lol Stupid stuff.
Got everything cleared for the MAP FMIC. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psc5ff6e53.jpg I have an idea of how I am going to get this turbo onto this manifold. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps21662391.jpg Now, if only I could get this damn thing to cooperate! http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps59586511.jpg |

So since you guys don't like my idea of using a heat exchanger, what are your opinions? Or alternate options.

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
I finally took two hours off of work and picked up a engine lift. In a few I will be putting the engine on my stand and start the fun. If you can even call it that. lol
I just thought I'd snap a picture of the flex plate now that it's fully off of the engine. Nasty looking. It 110% explains the sound the car had. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps6dcdf11d.jpg |

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Oliver Billet Extremes and Wiseco HDs ordered. They should be there by the time I get back from PRI. So much goodness coming out of this December. I don't know what I'm going to do with myself.

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Damn. Gonna be a hell of a build.

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
I got teased today while at the AETC conference here in Indy. Can't wait to get back and make shit happen.

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Pictures are kinda' isht. Didn't realize my phone was focusing on the background so I tried fixing it. Anyway..parts are here. I'm just waiting to get back to school next week and start doing some work! Gotta' order the rest of the junk too. Yikes..
http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps464c72e4.jpg http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps200bf676.jpg I've also been trying my hand at this wire tucking business. I think I've kind of tackled this backwards though. Oh well.. Now if I could just find my damn soldering iron! http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps84d20b43.jpg That's all the updating I have for now. Thanks for looking! |

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
The crank I had was showing some signs of oxidation and had a gouge on the front main seal journal. Rather than waste more money, play the guessing game and whatever else, I just did what had to be done.
http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps7af18550.jpg Rough stroker clearance. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps897a858c.jpg http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psee8d9a05.jpg Still have to get the oil passages done up like my GS-Ts block. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps98cd86b0.jpg |
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Ran into a little issue with the Evo.III block. This pretty much explains it all.
http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...pspdyirf24.jpg It's my fault for not spinning the block around on the align hone. Here's a question to machining minded people: what is the best way you've found to take down all the caps on the girdle? How about the block? I've been using a 12" file for the block and our flat sanding block for the girdle. The flat sanding block is so damn short though that it gives me about an inch to move it back and forth. Not to mention I don't have a long enough piece of sand paper to fit under all of the caps. I'm very close to grabbing a spare block of mine and starting over. Just seems unfortunate to jump ship with the E.3 block being its such a better casting and has oil squirters. Thanks for any advice in advance! |
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Since time is of the essence and I was given no other choice than to sand the girdle and start over I decided to just that; with a different block. I just so happen to have what looks like another Evo.III block. Maybe I'm wrong but none-the-less it had spun the bearings in one of the rods and the crank walked so I made some art.
http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...pshl8vcgal.jpg The block went into the oven today. Tomorrow will be a go in the wash, then a quick trip in the oven to dry, steel shot then a good tumble. After that tap, tap, tap some holes and onto a align hone. Let's see what I can get done in 9 hours. |
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Well as usual something happened. lol The crankwalked block gave me a huge runaround. First we had issues getting a straight bore out of our Rottler.
http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...pshdnjvrah.jpg I measured the centering fingers and came up with a .022" difference. This was our issues; or so we thought. After ordering two new sets from Rottler but before closing the shop we found a new set of fingers. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...ps9jqzwzgi.jpg I tested them in/on a virgin cylinder and had the exact same results. I also misread the boring fixture's mic/incorrectly set the bit. So I cut the top of the cylinder .030" down at about 3.453"" instead of 3.353". Not a huge deal but not exactly something I will allow to happen again! My instructor and I moved the block to the Kwik-way. I had the same results there. I had my instructor come over and he tried centering the boring bar. It bored alright but something was still off. What we found had me more than upset. Looking back at it I was more happy; I took it as a sign this block wasn't meant to be used. Take a look at the odd cutting characteristics at the top and bottom of the cylinder. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psuchp8zz9.jpg So I jumped on the "line" hone with the Evo.III block. After a flat file, precision block and some sand paper I brought down the girdle. I bolted it up and seen where I needed to take more. I spent the rest of the day as well as the next honing and spinning the block. I moved all of the "caps" to within...I'd say .0003"-.0004" of each other. This is at the most as far as variation goes. I had the mic set to the middle of the spec so 2.402". This left me with .0004" on each side to vary. None of the caps were over .0002"..if any were even at .0002". lol Anyway, thanks for reading! |
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
What's the spot in the cylinder wall in that last pic ?
|
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
That would be the hole that showed up on a .015" cut. Something was definitely off in this block. Very odd. Whoever C&S Engines was..idk man. Crankwalked, spun rod bearing, screwy cylinders & uneven deck surface. Messy stuff.

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
As I'm waiting for our Sunnen hone to free up and my head bolt bottoming tap to arrive I decided to start work on the head. I then somehow ended up working on something I have been meaning to do for awhile. Haha Here it is.
http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psgs7nwkyd.jpg http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psplfksalx.jpg http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psrpcuou1w.jpg I do not have quite the right angle yet and I believe I tapped a little too far. This is nothing a little more tapping and a grinder won't fix. So there's my sad excuse for an update! lol |
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
^I'm interested to see how that mod works, seems no-one had any real feedback.

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
I admire your dedication, under continued misfortune, to do things as right as possible. This thing should scream when you finish. The pics and progress are greatly appreciated.

Thank you for the responses. I appreciate the...appreciation! lol Thanks for reading guys.

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Any plans on a guard to keep oil out? Seen a few setups like this on tuners with a splash type guard in place.

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
I also saw a couple on tuners with custom baffles to guard it so oil isnt constantly going threw.
|
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Since I'm a dumbass, I'll ask. Is that just for crankcase pressure relief? Or something completely different and awesome?
|
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Crankcase relief.
|
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Force Engineering is the shop that did this with the battle welded in place.

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Still awaiting to get the tap for my head bolt holes. Then the torque plate can go on and into the hone it goes!
Yesterday I made a trip to MAP to have my buddy Aric resurface the block correctly. Our setup here at school is great is you're stuck in the days of 5.7 Chevys or V8s in general. That obviously isn't the case here though. So here it is. Thanks be to Aric again for the help. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psq9epnxid.jpg http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psijosuwgp.jpg http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psip3ye4rw.jpg Now here's the ultimate question; what color should I paint this pig?!? I wanted to go with Cummins beige but I'm almost thinking metallic gold will look good. I think I'm losing it! I hear black and purple but my Lord, I cannot make up my mind! Hahaha |
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Got a color picked out thanks to none other than yours truly.
http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psk7ougbj9.jpg Also got the torque plate on. This only after decided to say screw the 11x1.25mm bottoming tap that should have been here today. One would think if you order something on a Thursday from California it would leave the state before the following Wednesday. Oh well though! All I did was bead blast a stock head bolt and grind a notch in it. It cleaned up a little trapped junk. Good old CRC brake clean did the rest of the work. Tomorrow I will have the day to hone and ya'll can believe it'll be done. Then back to head porting. After that a little guide replacement and hone then assembly. http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...pstkqvpeog.jpg http://i467.photobucket.com/albums/r...psczn8tfdv.jpg |
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Any reason you just didn't use the balance shaft alignment hole for a vent?
|
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD

That isn't to saying one might not be able to used that hole. Or the hole on the front case when your B.S'. are deleted. |
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
just wondering, because I think i'm going to use that one. My motor is already assembled and don't really want to try to drill a hole.
|
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
In that case yeah, you'd probably want to avoid getting junk into your block. This also isn't an easy hole to drill. Nor is it cheap. I think there were three of us. Two holding the block and myself drilling. The drill bit and tap would put you back almost $50 as well.
|
Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
what size did you tap it to?
|

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
wow, that is big. No wonder it was hard to drill!

Re: 95 Talon TSi AWD
Yes sir. Hahaha We got 'er though.
If anyone ever needs it done I can do it for you. I've got the junk to do it and the part number for the fittings. |
