Re: 91 Galant VR4
In the process of removing the trunk lid hinges the rear glass broke, no bid deal minus the mess it made. Here a few pics of the progress. This will be a little easier to seal off the trunk area all said and done also.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
Percy's Speed Glass is the one you are thinking of, http://www.percyshp.com/. If I do just lexan it would be temporary until I could do the hole car in speed glass.
~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Just clear coat the lexan.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
Looking good dude, now on to the engine.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
Reid mentioned you were using a plasma cutter to remove stuff, so I whipped mine out and got to work.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
I was impressed!
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Gross, I don't think anyone wants to see chromepuff whip anything out.
I heard from a little birdy this thing is getting close and that power to weight is mighty impressive. |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Rumor mill, uh oh....
I think we are the re assembly stage, we will see what happens over this week. As for power to weight, we will see on both for the final numbers, but its looking like 2500lbs with me in it, and power, well 1000 crank hp should make this thing move at the track, But to start it will be E85 and around 7xx crank hp. And yes the plasma cutter has been used a few times to remove weight. I have taken a truck bed size load to the scrap yard all ready. Its getting close to weigh the chassis again, last time I reinstalled vital parts but still lost weight. ~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
I hope this turns out the way you want it or even better.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Hope this thing ends up looking like Rau's AWD before he got rid of it. That thing was light!

Re: 91 Galant VR4
Yes^^.
I believe that is Isaac with him.. Blast from the past. BTW, John, that's some serious shizz you got going on with the gvr4. Can't wait to see it done. :) |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
We need updated hawtness pics.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Yeah, I loved that car.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
I never saw his AWD. I think the car is coming together nice for a garage build. I will post some more pics tonight.
~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
It was very light, tin floors, etc.
Looking forward to some updated pics. |

Here is the external pic of the rear deck lid. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_11362.jpg Here is the inside shot of the rear deck lid, the interior will be painted all 1 color. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_11364.jpg This is the passenger front wheel well. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_11365.jpg This is the driver front wheel well, we removed a total of 6 lbs of under body coating, this included both front wheel wells and few feet of the floor pan. I would guess the under body coating is a total of 15lbs and the rest will stay on the car for now. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_11320.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_11321.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_11322.jpg Here is the solid rear bushing I made to replace the rubber on the front lower control arm. This is steel and chrome moly welded and lubed with extreme high pressure grease. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_11324.jpg Here is a shot of the welded in solid subframe mounts I made. More to come later this week. I do have a few more pics in my album, and thanks for looking. ~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Tuners nation sells those rear bushings, don't know if you care or not.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
I figured someone made a solid bushing. I did this with some left over roll cage bits and about 2 hours of my time. I will be making solid mounts for the drive shaft also.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
You are my hero.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
Sick John, just Sick.

Re: 91 Galant VR4
Thanks for the comments. I will be out there tonight and I hope to finish a few loose ends. I will post some pics if some things come together.

Rolling on all 4 again. A rear bumper cover and a hood away from a complete rolling chassis http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_12337.jpg I removed the plastic molding and cut the bottom part of the fenders off. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_12334.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_12335.jpg And solid mounted the plastic molding to the chassis, and a few zuss fasteners will hold the bottom parts of the fenders in. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_12330.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_12338.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_12333.jpg The front clip now has quick release pins, which will be removable even with the hood installed. http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_12331.jpg http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...ture_12332.jpg The fuel cell is mounted and the battery box has a home, I just need to buy the thread rod for the battery tie down. Just a few more items to finish up the chassis then its back onto getting the engine up and running, then finish mount a few items when the motor is back in the car. ~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
That tube front end is awesome John. I hope the car turns out like you imagine it will!
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Thanks, its turning out better then I had planned. I think you can see it, even over the span of this build thread. We just looked at every aspect of this build and talked over different ways to do things and picked the best option we came up with. There have been a few revisions but the planning and taking our time on everything is making the process nice and smooth.
~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Looking good John.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
I now have a mock up motor back in place. This is to finish up the loose ends for the engine and turbo setup before I bring the real deal back home from work. I did put it back up on the scales again with almost everything to make it run. I will just say the 2400lb race weight will be no problem.
~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
wowsers. 2,400 pounds. do you know how light a GVR4 has gone by any chance? 2,400 is feather weight for this car.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
No idea, I just know when it was running last time, for the DB dyno day, it was 2850, and I think that was with me in it. And before that when it was running 25psi with a 60trim and making about 440fwhp (dynaguess) and ran a 11.66@122mph it weight about 3200lbs.
~John |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Quote:
Dude you are so going to run faster than 11.65@123mph. :) |
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Awesome progress!
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
Holy crap, I am jealous of that weight and the whole build. I wanna see this thing break some records.
|
Re: 91 Galant VR4
^Same here you better do some F'n damage with this thing.
SO maybe for starters you can take home the dyno day trophy? lol |
