Re: Engine Oil
Lol, the only Properties he posted were Viscosity. TECHNICALLY the viscosity of olive oil would qualify for a motor oil, but nothing else in it would. Basically the point I was going for.

I'm just going by viscosity, nothing else. That was the conversation. |
Re: Engine Oil
No need to get cynical here Jake. You posted the numbers, and from what I see, the bigger the numbers the higher the viscosity, your olive oil is like a SAE 11 weight oil. That isn't an usable oil weight for a car. So you really didn't win this one TECHNICALLY as a 10 weight oil wouldn't be used in an engine. It would more than likely be a hydraulic fluid.
I say we throw some herbs in the engine with it and use it as a french bread dip later. mmmmmm |

Lots of butthurt in this thread!

Re: Engine Oil
Guess more people should of used Castrol Syntec, or Valvoline Synpower... :P
|
Re: Engine Oil
I use Quaker State or Castrol Synthetic oils personally.
|
Re: Engine Oil
Valvoline VR1 here.
|
Re: Engine Oil
Reg. valvoline or rotella here, worked for 82k miles, -20F up to over 110F just fine.
|
Re: Engine Oil
Rotella T6 full synthetic for my baby. <3 Zinc.

I always used Rotella in my DSM, and would never use anything else for a car that requires dino oil. |
Re: Engine Oil
Amsoil isn't dino oil??

Not the stuff I use. http://www.amsoil.com/storefront/rd30.aspx http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/images/RD30_300.jpg |
Re: Engine Oil
This thread has a little drama in it but still good info. Anyone posting brand, please make sure to include the weights you're using.
Goodhart, put a bigger turbo on your evo and put some good miles on that oil--please share some blackstone results@5k+ miles! |

Re: Engine Oil
I beat the piss out of my engine, Im running Mobil Delvac 1300 15w40, I like to add Rislone ZDDP additive as well. Any diesel oil, Delo 400 is great oil too.
|
Re: Engine Oil
Anyone like running Mobil 1 10w30 or 5w30?

Re: Engine Oil
I've used various flavors of Mobil 1 in everything i've ever owned, cars and motorcycles.
Except for the scooter, that gets Maxima Castor 927! : pimp : |
Re: Engine Oil
What would be good for my 2g? I guess I've never really thought about more then those for my car. I don't really race the engine much either, being its my DD.
|
Re: Engine Oil
whats all done to it?
|
Re: Engine Oil
What mods do you have on it?
My go-to's are pretty standard: Mobile1 10w30 stock, lightly modded up to 350-400whp or so, ran this for 4 years in my evo8 did great! Rotella T6 5w40 same, great oil for the money AmsOil High Zinc formula 10w40 400-550whp ? I've run this in my evoX for the last 2 years with great success. |
Re: Engine Oil
Intake, exhaust, e316g, 660cc injectors, and a front mount. Nothing done to the engine, so then running 10w30 should be fine right?
I've heard running the high mileage full synthetics will be a little better too, because of extra additives? I've never actually ran it though |
Re: Engine Oil
No love for the redline motor oil in this thread? With so many running it in their trans, I'm curious why nobody runs it in their motor.

Re: Engine Oil
Thoughts on the best oil to run in the winter for 500WHP stock block FP red powered evo? I run 10w40 high zinc amsoil for the summer. I think I ran 5w30 amsoil last winter, but I don't think it has the same high zinc formula. What has a good level of zinc in a low weight oil? I don't turn down the boost for the winter either. I'm not sure what could go wrong if I just ran the 10w40 all year????
|
Re: Engine Oil
^Im in the same boat here. 2.3 Build is just about done and MAP told me to go ahead and run that but no short distance drives in the cold weather with the 10w-40
|
Re: Engine Oil
i really like brad penn oil. at the cost of 5 a quart its vety affordable
|
Re: Engine Oil
10W is fine for winter. 5W always seemed too thin for the 4G63 engines, especially once built with looser tolerances than factory.
|
Re: Engine Oil
I run VR1 Full Synthetic 20w-50 in the summer, and I put Amsoil in the tranny.
|
Re: Engine Oil
Driven Racing Oil by Joe Gibbs Racing. BR5 for break-in, HR4 for Summer, and FR20 for Winter. Non-detergent and high zinc/phosphorus. Forced Performance's article on oil is a good read.

Re: Engine Oil
Just like in gasoline, detergent is a good thing for the vast majority of cars & setups.

Re: Engine Oil
Information overload, but good article. Glad to see the very affordable QSUD score high, had plenty of people give me the wtf reaction when I recommend it as an excellent bang for the buck oil. According to this specific test it's actually a substantial bang for the buck. It's become my go-to oil if nothing else is on really good sale. However I wish I would have seen them test the 0w-20/30 version as that's what I typically choose.
Also I may have missed it but would have liked to seen the Motorcraft 5w-20 that is OEM fill for pretty much all fords now. |
Re: Engine Oil
Interesting. M1 has a pretty low breakdown temp @ 265. I'm using the Amsoil Dominator which has lower pressure ranking (#38), but good up to 300 degrees. I guess that really only matters if you're doing 20+ minutes at a time on the road course in summer without a good oil cooler. Most cars will never see 265+ oil temps, I think on the vette I saw 270 at the end of my second or third HPDE session on a summer day, pushing the car pretty hard.
I'm thinking the 2.5x price factor for the Amsoil isn't worth it. |
