Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Probably stock stuff for now unless I can get a good deal on some Evo springs and retainers.
Brown- I don't want to fuck it up. I don't think John will charge much anyways. He only quoted me $60 for a re-surface and hot tank. I will be asking him before I drop it off and see how much he says. As far as tapping and plugging the egr, I would have been spending more money buying the tools to do it myself than I would having him do it. |

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Well I've done it by hand twice before with no issues, but obviously it's up to you.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
It really isn't that expensive to have it done. I mean, since it's there one might as well have it done with precision.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
That casting flash really isn't a big deal because there's nothing knocking it around up there. I do end up cleaning up the oil and coolant ports on blocks just for good measure, but not regular flash inside the head or block. Never hurts though.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
So, I will be putting together most of the shortblock on Friday with Kerry. Quick question, what do some of the experienced builders on here suggest for piston ring end gap?
Stock spec is as follows: No. 1 0.25-0.40 mm (.0098-.0157 in.) No.2 0.20-0.35 mm (.0079-.0138 in.) Oil 0.20-0.70 mm (.0079-.0276 in.) Limit: No. 1, No.2 0.8 mm (.031 in.) Oil 1.0 mm (.039 in.) Now, I plan on running lots of boost from the 16g and possibly nitrous down the road. I know that more heat/boost/timing/etc = wider gap. My question is how wide? I have read from a few builds on here that .018 and .021 work well for a higher boost motor. Thoughts? Steve? John? Swanny? Shane? |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Anyone? I'll be assembling this thing tomorrow.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
On my 2.3 rebuild I gapped my top ring 21 thousands or so, and while compression was decent (170-175 across), I got more blowby then I was happy with for a DD. If I were to do it again I'd go in the 16-18 range unless you are shooting for more than 500whp. But I'm not a motor builder, so take it with a grain of salt.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Yea, I won't be seeing 500 whp any time soon, just a 16g.
Also, what compression pistons were you using? Mine will only be stock 7.8:1 |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
9:1 Ross pistons. My stock 2g motor was 180-185 with the same tester. I think I could have had the same numbers if I had gapped them tighter, plus I didn't have a ring filer, just by hand so it was a sub-par job to say the least.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
You remember what the second ring was gapped to? Seems like a huge debate on whether to gap the second ring tighter or looser than the top.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Sorry, don't remember.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
On our honda, the second ring was looser than the top... but that was also per the factory specs.
DSM? hell if I know. |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Well, I've slowly been plucking away at assembling the motor over at 95talonracer's house.
Oil squirters and main bearings in https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...05004384_n.jpg Checking clearances with the plastigauge. ~.0017 oil clearance on the mains. Spec is .0007-.0020 https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...48122865_n.jpg Crank bolted it. Awesome help by Kerry showing me how to check crank endplay. Ended up being a solid .003. Spec is .002-.007. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...23483639_n.jpg Pistons were nasty, but cleaned up pretty nicely. Took forever. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...63903833_n.jpg https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...32738556_n.jpg Rod bearings in place https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...01173613_n.jpg Plastigauge on the rod bearings, ended up being right around .0015-.0017, Spec is 0.0006-0.0030 https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...20240811_n.jpg Checking ring end gap: https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...22617355_n.jpg .018 top ring https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...97487039_n.jpg .024 2nd ring https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...44301173_n.jpg Writing everything down for reference https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...16610605_n.jpg All bolted in and torqued to spec https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...46151710_n.jpg Decided to call it a night after that. Front case and BSE is ready to install. Have to track down a rear main seal since the one I got in my gasket kit was wrong. Then I can install the front case, oil pump housing, oil pickup, and rear main seal and oil pan. |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Painted my oil pan as well
https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...43765185_n.jpg Also picked up some Evo IV (4) valve springs, retainers, and seats from Spaz https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...39222025_n.jpg And an Eprom ECU from Cam aka Spoolin_Turbo https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...25223370_n.jpg |

Lookin good Mike!

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Nice progress! At this rate you should have this together by the time the snow flies.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
eh. maybe. I still need to bring the head to Gosh and with this stupid ass govt shutdown, I have no guarantee that I will get my November VA disability so I am done spending money on it until that shit is figured out.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Haven't checked this out yet, looking good though sir. Keep it up!

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Nice progress indeed.
