All hand tools and never having done anything on that type of car I thought I did an alright job. I wasn't in any rush either, shit was rusted on which took a while to break it all free.

I don't pretend to know what the fuck I am doing, thats why I pay people to do my shit.

Sorry I am not pro like you guys.

And Scheides has had plenty of problems himself...he tinkers more than I do. He just knows what he is doing more than I do so he has less stupid problems.

I am feeling good right now...I just hope it lasts until I test drive.

New CMC back in...
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/d81f248a.jpg

One of the bolts absolutely blows to put back in, like you need midget hands.

Booster, brackets, ECU all back in..
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/ed7f7d8a.jpg

Installed my new spark plug cover while I was in there...I think it looks pretty damn good, my shitty iphone4 pics don't do it justice...I did scratch the shit out of my powder coat on the valve cover though :(
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/17598213.jpg

And strut bar, intake and everything plugged back in!
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/53b37a21.jpg

All I need to do is bleed the shit tomorrow and its time to drive it. I also bought a few cans of degreaser, my engine bay needs it. So I am going to pressure wash that shit this week hopefully assuming my new CMC works. With my luck I am so thinking I am fucked.

PS. the brake booster still sucked absolute balls to get back in, like worst thing ever. I wanted to kill kittens.

Get this thing done and sell it. Buy vette and be done. I cant believe you havent burned this thing to ground yet. Shit I would of set on fire and take the insurance check and buy a vette. some that doesnt break everytime you try to drive it.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

I am very stubborn.

When you invest 25k into a car and it has issues it just doesn't make financial sense to sell it.

It's an endless loop really. I go back and forth on it whether I should sell it.

To get another car to the speed/fun of my car I will still need to spend more money. I could realistically get like $30kish I think. So then to get a nice vette I will need to spend more money, then I have a stockish vette not as fast as my car.

If the car keeps breaking obviously it would make sense to sell it but obviously I don't have a time machine. I always assume my bad luck will end with this car and I will get to drive it. So far this year hasn't been that bad though, its just little shit. It all adds up but nothing serious yet.

It's so tough to sell something you have spent this much time/money on when you haven't gotten to enjoy it yet. If I was bored of it that would be another story.

Now Im rambling...

93gtpeater 05-02-2012 12:34 PM

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

If it keeps breaking? It will keep breaking with the power you are making it will wont be long till something stopped breaks again. I think sell it now before something big breaks again.

Murlo26 05-02-2012 12:38 PM

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Why do you say it will keep breaking? There is no reason my setup shouldn't last for at least 30k at my power levels.

If the tranny/driveline has issues, I could see that, but motor should be good for plenty of miles.

Shit happens in the modding game at these levels. I've accepted that to a degree.

But I am not making extreme power by any means, so I should be able to enjoy it.

All modified cars are needy and require extra maintenance, simple as that. Every car also has it's unique weak points. If you want something as reliable as stock...keep it stock, no matter what it is.

/agree

If I did sell and by a vette, I would for sure be modding that too and I am sure I would break it. I would agree that it would prolly break less though haha.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Well I know modding a car will make it less reliable. But it just seems like YOU keep having shitty luck with this evo. Thats all iam saying. you wrecked one built motor not saying its your fault but you did go thur one built motor. Just hate to see this one blow up to. It seems like its getting fixed more then its being driven. Just saying it sounds like you keep having stupid problems.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

I guess to me theres a point where I wouldnt want to sink any more money into a project like that, regardless of the power it was putting down. Id return it back to stockish and try and get rid of it.

Sure all modded cars can break, but when you are driving it only a few weeks out of the year.. thats not something id consider even fun to deal with.

As B says, to each their own. :)

I am not disagreeing with you, trust me, I am one more broken piece away from deciding to sell it.

Like I said, I go back and forth on it. If it doesn't run the majority of this summer, its gone. I have decided that already.

It will be there, I have faith :) There was a garage sale nearby selling midgets, picked one up there. Very handy.

Seriously the worst issue I had was the power bleeder for brakes...ugh. Shawn (simulatedwood) was the man and came over to help with it because I am retarded. Once he got it all lined up I finished without issue.

Felt really good to drive it again. For whatever reason, I have this weird feeling while driving that every time I push the clutch in it won't pop back up lol.

Paranoia doesn't escape the modded.

I still have DSM syndrome where I smell for coolant and oil every time I stop. I always freak out when I hear AC condensation dripping/sizzling on the headers after I get out of the car. It sucks.

Glad to hear you car is back running again!

Good job! I should give you my number, I was basically just putsing around Blaine yesterday nothing to do, I coulda came and gave you a hand.

Yes a fairly stock $30k Vette won't be as fast as your car. But there is something to be said about a 400hp vette that you just put the key in and drive and enjoy every single day, vs. a 600hp DSM that could definately wax it any day of the week, as long as it's actually running (and running well) that week...

Its easy for us to say ditch it because we don't have all the $$$ and sweat into it that you do. Good luck with whatever you choose! I think you are going to end up disappointed if you think that you're going to be issue free for the next 30k miles...

I hear you. And trust me, after driving the corvette on the cruise I am starting to have a huge appreciation for the whole stockish car feeling again.

I don't think I will be issue free at all for 30k, lol. What I meant was, I don't think my motor will have to be pulled for 30k, at least I don't think it should have to. Everything this year doesn't really bother me as its not too costly to fix. I just don't want to have another 10k motor build!

It's working now, I drove it to work and am happy about it. Time to wash it and drive it while I can :)

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Well I was busy last night doing logging and forgot the gopro needed to be charged, I will try and test it out tonight for fun.

I came to a realization though, I know why tuners hate DW injectors!!!! Because they suck to tune lol.

I am on revision 8 now for scaling/latencies and have done ~45 minutes of logging for each, that is over 5 hours of scaling lol. Still not dialed in yet. Ugh. I remember why I pay people for this shit, but I am learning a lot. I will get my trims under +/- 5% yet! The best I have seen so far on these is +/- 8%.

scheides 05-10-2012 10:28 AM

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

How are you still screwing around with your injectors? I thought they were set?

Buy some FIC 1680's man, they're not as bad as everyone says ;)

I have no idea, they suck, lol. They just seem very very inconsistent. I have done tons of logging and just when you start to think you are getting close they wonder around for trims like crazy.

I am running my stock intake duct taped in there basically right now so I am on stock MAF scaling to try and get the injectors perfect.

Maybe I should just upgrade to the 1680's. So you haven't seen any problems on them? Did you have to do any minIPW shit? And they run pump gas well enough to put a tank through every once in a while?

scheides 05-10-2012 10:37 AM

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Yes I had to drop minIPW but it was a single, simple change and no issues since then. They ran like crap w/o that change.

They run great on pump gas.

The scaling/latancies I'm using are from mrfred...shane kinda hates them b/c the car does some goofy shit but end of the day it starts every time just fine (just fixed hot start issue this week actually, but that was minor), and the car drives good and smooth. AFRs are very consistent on the street.

Kracka 05-10-2012 10:43 AM

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Reading this makes me love my ID1000's even more...you would never, ever, know they're anything but stock (idle, drivability, start-up, etc.) :)

Does ID make anything between their 1k's and 2k's?

Murlo26 05-10-2012 10:47 AM

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Hmmm, well I emailed MAP to see if they have any in stock. If they do maybe I will impulse buy them and dump my DW's.

Kracka, if ID made anything close to what I need, even 1200's would probably work, I'd run those all day long. But nope, just 1k to 2k for them and I don't want to deal with the 2000's on stock ECU, they can work well but it takes a lot of work. And frankly I want to beat on my car some! I haven't gone WOT in months now.

I also have to swap in my hobbs switch to get rid of the blaq box I have. I don't care for it and I think it just complicates things and I don't see an advantage.

Kracka 05-10-2012 10:50 AM

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Are you sure the ID1k's wouldn't work for you? They're rated conservatively and I'm probably around only 50-60% IDC right now.

Murlo26 05-10-2012 10:56 AM

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

Pretty sure. I was over 100% duty cycle on my DW1000's on my FPred setup at a lot less power. At least I think I was. 420whp vs. 500whp on DB's dyno.

I wouldn't buy anything smaller, mine work, just not great. And I don't want to spend money unless its a for sure thing.

There's no way those would be enough on his car. ID was going to make 1500's, same as my FIC 1680's but they got the plug pulled on them for some reason.

Probably that.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog

ID had 1600's out for quite a while actually. They pulled there injectors first (they were based on the same injector as the FIC 1680's).

FIC did their own testing and still have the 1680's but they are strictly E85 rated only due to the fuel temp issues.
