Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I've never used the clay bar in straight lines, I've gone in a circular motion just like I was applying wax. It's pretty cool if the paint is bad as you'll feel the clay kind of "dragging" at first then after a couple passes it should be smooth.
Don't forget to apply some wax after you clay |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I was planning on doing claybay and wax all in one day. Get it ready for the season.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I guess I shall get the dark colored one. Red seems in between almost, but I'd guess dark.
Thanks Kracka lacka! Man, going to be a long ass day doing all this shit. Going to need some beer, lots. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Yes, you should get the dark version. It generally took me 8 hours to completely detail the S2k.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
My Evo takes 10-12 for a full regimen, depending on if I have to compound out scratches or not.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Get a orbital buffer to remove the wax, polish, ect, its not hard and saves a heck of a lot of time and does a better job than hand. Just use light pressure, the weight of the machine basically.. I always did the 3 step meguires and it has never failed me. A good half day with clay bar, 10-12 hours is nutty.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Finished rolling fenders last saturday, took a good six hours or so with lunch (chipotle mmmm). We did the 2nd rear fender and actually did both front ones as well. The front ones are interesting, I had to heat the area then push on the fender for it to work.
The three we did saturday look good, the one we did 2 years ago, not terrible, but a little wavy. Tonight I am off to Shawns to do the springs and new RSB. Hopefully nothing rubs too terrible, I don't think it will though. If anything maybe a little clean up rolling. On an unrelated note...I reset all my fuel trims (playing with the new evoscan 2.9 actuator which lets you do it from evoscan) and then the car wouldn't idle. Hmmm. It was already up to operating temp but not sure why it wouldn't idle at all. It was working great before I reset the trims. I thought my idle trim was negative in fall so it was trying to pull fuel but it looks like its starving now. Lame. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
The idle is controlled by the throttle body opening and closing, not a seperate idle motor like a cable throttle car, so often it has to relearn how to idle after resetting the ECU.

I could drive it, but I had to rev it lots to keep going. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Let it learn, if it idles low, but doesn't stall, let it. Extra learning is always needed, especially with cams, a large MAF pipe, and a ported throttle body.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
idle recovered today just fine after a good while of learning. I think the problem was starting out hot when the idle was lower. When i started it cold the idle is higher anyway so it kept it running long enough to learn.
In other news... http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/fdbe9f27.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/04d38f8b.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/571172ba.jpg http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...6/5648c731.jpg YAY! Got my eibach springs and whiteline RSB installed tonight. Took a while but nothing too terrible. Thanks again Chet for the "new" endlinks, most appreciated. BIG THANKS to shawn (simulatedwood) for the help, he is the man. I am going to attempt to repay his kindness by helping him with his exedy twin install...and bringing beer for that one No more Murlo lift kit crap now, I am pleased. The car feels pretty damn good now and sits just where I want it. The fender rolling worked perfect it seems as no rubbing yet. The eibachs are pretty stock feeling until you hit a good bump then they are stiff but not too terrible. Overall very happy. Sad note, my alignment is so far off it seems that you can tell the wear on the inside is already returning. My alignment is this friday to take care of that and I will swap tires in the front to the back. Nothing bad at all, but sucks that in only like 500 miles you can even tell. My guess is the multiple motor swaps screwing alignment up not the alignment itself. Oh, also the spacer Shawn helped me put in for the new belt seems to have done the trick. After 500ish miles the belt looks perfect. So a plus there. |

Thanks guys, the car seriously feels like its starting to come together. Now its time to enjoy it! I just hope it stays healthy this year. I've been pretty easy on it so far. All I have left on my list is alignment, fix oil leak, a few underhood bushings, fluids (rear diff and tcase) and finally a good detailing. Then drive it and log it all summer! Lowered it looks so so much better...the exhaust is awfully low, might have to switch out mufflers. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Sweet man! I think you'll like the new suspension setup a lot; I love mine!
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Now you both just need a RCK!
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Screw that...not this year anyway. Not because I don't want it or think I should have it but I am not getting another alignment this year. They are too expensive to get more than one a year.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
I consider alignments a tune for your suspension; expensive, but well worth the returns.

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Looks much better! I'd watch close over the next couple weeks though to make sure it doesn't rub over time. I thought I was fine on my talon and then on one of our cruises we started to notice a groove in the rubber from rubbing on my fender.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
If it rubs I will just pull/roll it more. I have some pretty good clearance though. Honestly I think I could prolly throw 285's on there now and get away with it, maybe 295's. I don't really need wider tires but I could I think.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
The springs will settle, so if its close now well you get it.
6266 on the way?!! You hardly drive this one, just get a 6466 or 6765 and not waste time. |

The 6266 was a joke at the "I buy stuff that other people make fun of me for" comment about my turbo being too small :) I don't plan on any power modifications this year. Next purchases will be helmet for the track and a GoPro hero2. Then just paying for gas, fluids and insurance hopefully. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Quality springs don't "settle" unless they weren't seated correctly during installation.
|
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
After doing the install, I don't really see how you could not seat them properly though, they have slots where everything sits nicely on the bottom and the top has to align with the bolt holes.
I think all is well, springs work, yay :) |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
My Eibachs actually did settle from initial install, not a lot just from driving around a bit. From when you install them, load isnt 100% yet...

Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Well found out why the star specs got eaten up...toe was all screwed up in front. Everything feels awesome now! Time to let er rip!
http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b2...gnment0001.jpg After my alignment was done the car stopped at MAP for them to do my downpipe gasket as I had an oem one and exhaust was leaking between the exhaust stream and O2 dump below wastegate pressure and it was loud all the time. After they fixed a cross threaded bolt that was all good to go, yay! They also fixed my heatshield for me quick. I did screw it up, was using the wrong bolt hole, so they moved it over and bam, it fit :) Some bad news, they found my oil leak...its coming from the timing cover :( There is RTV there from the motor assembly but it looks like it still leaked through. Mitsu has a TSB for this but I have already had them fix it once so that ain't happening. For now I am just going to watch it, but essentially the head has to come off to fix this leak...FML. MAP was like, anything that we can do to the head to make it worth while? I said not really, its pretty much all done up. The only thing I could think of was put the new timing chain in there so that will wait. Hopefully it stays within reason for a few months as its like a 14 hours (book time) job. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Wtf are they talking about? It's the timing cover that leaks. Just pull off the acc belt and pulleys (you know how to do this now!) and unbolt the cover. Clean and apply fresh RTV and re-assemble.
It is def a PITA job but not 14 hours as you do not have to pull the head, just about a billion little bolts holding the cover in place. Unless the leak is coming from somewhere else? |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Quote:
Obviously before I do anything I will try to figure out what they were talking about, but regardless, still something is leaking. |
Re: Dave's Evo X Build/The Life of Dave blog
Oh! Yea I remember now, there's one or two spots on the head that is supposed to get a dab of RTV...where the head and block and cover all meet, front and back. Kinda silly really. Maybe try the tsb yourself? You just sand/clean the area that it's leaking from really good and slather some RTV over the outside of that joint...pretty ghetto but....it works I guess :)
