mmm...probably.
We figure we'll be fine to 22ish on pump gas, right now its a peak of 14.9psi...the wastegates are as low as they can go.
You figure these wheels don't start humming until the 18-22psi range. Plus I am hitting a spark blowout issue where peak power should occur.

In the end we'll find out.

The car has shown a few headaches.
1)MSD died while washing it, oh well...that is resolved.
2)Crank end seal decided it didn't like to keep oil in the motor. Thankfully that was caught under cruising and is being fixed right now (just got back to the shop, car was on a flatbed, yay!).
The best 60 miles yet, I am staying in it, she'll eventually just give up and coroperate.

Keep us all posted. I have been reading about this soon-to-be-badass car for far to long;)

It seems to me that the soon to be GOOD will alleviate all of the bad that has occured. Good Luck!! Maybe I'll swing by on Thursday afternoon and try to get a ride? I guess only time will tell.

All back together, waiting for the rtv to set up and chasing down a coolant leak.
::shrugs::.

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

woot! It runs again.
We turned it up to 20psi ;) and there is still plenty left on the table as far as boost on pump is concerned. However, we are tired and going home now :)...its "fast enough" for having 75 miles on the setup.
hmm...the gallery seems to be down. I'll put it on my cardomain page.

Thats awsome. looks like 500 on pump should be easy. I really gotta see this thing in person.

I saw the car today... It is honestly what I'd consider an ultimate street car. Didn't have a ride, but I sat in it when it was running. There's something cool about actually feeling the engine idling, or trying to, with lumpy cams.

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

What kind of pump gas? 110 leaded?

SlowWhite 04-15-2006 06:34 PM

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

I asked that already 92oct.

I've been running 25-26psi on 93oct all year. Went 11.7.

Hopefully Josh plans to run more then 20psi on 92oct... hell you guys made like 100 more hp with 5psi? wonder if 25 will put down upper 500's?

niterydr 04-16-2006 03:02 PM

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

Yes, 92 octane. We plan on turning it up to the 25-26psi range, it should be close to the 600awhp goal we had, as it is averaging 20hp per psi without being very agressive with the timing. I just have to put some mileage on the setup before I really try to push it.
At 482awhp, it really really scoots! I imagine last time I had the car on the road, it was making 225awhp tops. That got me a 13.0@104 ;).

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

Swanny theres no way you used to be only making around 225 to the wheels to run a 13 at 104, that boat would never move that fast with only 225 hp ;) Maybe 250-280 Id say. Congrats on the setup though, everything is looking good!

We just had a 3000gt with better compression and the same mods as mine on the dyno a few weeks ago (and lower miles).
I think it made 225awhp.

Ran into a black 1990 300zx down in burnsville tonight (car shopping with the woman). I'll have to start measuring stuff in buslengths now ;). It did have exhaust, I think that was it for mods. By the middle of 3rd gear, it was just ugly, we went from a 25mph roll and I was in 2nd (lag lag lag lag...weeeeee).

Looks good, congrats on a running car and the #'s so far. I like the exhaust tip you used on your exhaust. I've been looking for somethink like that for my other X... Do you know if they make the same/similar with a 3" inlet? PM me with any info if your willing to tell me. Thanks.

Get the pictures updated with a final product Swanny. Your too busy ripping around to take pictures now huh? Get your ass in gear.

Glad to hear you got her going Josh, I still plan to come up and detail it for you.:) I'm just so fucking lazy!!! Hense, why my car has not moved or been touched since last fall :(

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

For those that care:

Cylinder #3 doesn't like me anymore. Last night we made 519awhp at 22psi, very safe tune. Then we decided to turn it up a bit. It made 526 at 24-25psi...the car seemed to just go "flat" after spool-up. Safe a/f ratios, no knock, low timing (16 degrees advance), a very safe and monitered tune, almost like you'd see with doctors watching someone in the ICU wing of a hosptial :). Upon decel it smoked really bad, smelt like fuel and oil. We pulled the plug on cylinder #3, it was wet with fuel. We didn't have plugs so we called it a night.

We did a cold compression check and #3 was weaker than the rest. We figured with the rich a/f ratio, it could have washed out the rings, so we were going to see if they'd seat, or if running it would help figure out what happened.

This morning I swapped in some plugs and fired it up, still plumbing to beat hell. It hasn't lost any oil or coolant, and all the gauges read fine, no knock, no noises...so I figured we'd do a few vac pulls. I ended up doing a "power pull" it made 486? AWHP or so...but it "ticked" a bit so we shut it down.

Thinking we threw a cam follower or something, we pulled the valve cover (it sounded like valvetrain)...all is fine. Pulled the plug again, very rich and some oil. Peer down the hole, and my beautiful weisco pistons are coated. The cylinder #3 is a bit clean from the fuel and I can see the numbers/writing on it. The only problem is instead of being "inline" its at a 45 or so degree angle.

Our theory is that the rod bent under power, probably right where it necks down. The piston probably went to low, and ripped off the oiling control ring (hince the smoking). The rod was probably just pushing the piston up and down the cylinder cockeyed. I hope the valvetrain is fine (looks good from the top side) and the rest of the setup (turbos!) are good.

I guess I was asking for it pushing the factory rods, but we did try everything. This rod was probably just a bad apple, as the rest of the cylinders are 100% perfect (or so they appear). I know people have excellent luck with the factory shortblock, but I am never lucky in life.
I am not worried about the rest of the setup being damaged, because we shut it down very quickly, and it has excellent oil pressure.

I'll probably put the car in a corner for a bit before I rip it apart. I am thinking forged crank with pauters before it runs again. Then we'll see what 30+psi looks like on race gas.

Oh well shit happens, and I am no longer a fan of stock rods. Even if they are brass bushed, arp'd, cryo'd.

So much for trying to crack records this year :(.

I was really worried about the rods, and I guess the worry was verified.

Damn sorry to hear that man I was looking forward to running along side you this year.

Pimpin Dsmstyle 04-20-2006 06:32 PM

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

That's too bad. At least you got to see it run and drive for the first time in a long time. I'm sure it won't sit forever like it did last time. Good luck though, I hope everything comes around then next time you bring her back to life.

TheBlizzard 04-20-2006 06:56 PM

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

I would guess the bearing went over it going because of the power level. I could see if it was 600+, but since you had no detonation that you know of its pretty slim that it was horepower induced.

Swifty1638 04-20-2006 06:56 PM

Re: Finally getting stuff done on our cars

...yu should still get pictures up of the car..if that motor above is yours..nice job!

out of curiosity, what made you decide to go with stock rods, and not some nice forged ones? I mean, since you had it all apart, I just assumed you'd throw aftermarket ones in..are the stock ones really supposed to hold that much power?

hopefully, your block is fine, and there is not any scoring. good luck man.
