Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Picked up old man Hill's Thermal muffler, a recirc'd fp intake, and a set of clean stock cams last weekend. Now when I have some time, I can install the cams, gears, etc and get the timing belt on. I still need to clean up one of my valve covers too, maybe get it powdercoated and put that on.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Got the motor timed. I had been having a hell of a time getting it set, the crank kept ending up a tooth off. Took a few days off and gave it another shot and it ended up being perfect. Also got some more crap bolted onto it. I sold the 16g a whole back, so I picked up a turbo that will better suit my needs and bought the hardware and oil feed/return for it this morning. Also having the neighbor guy powdercoat the dipstick tube and water pipe just for shits. He's cheap and does good work. Baby will be here any day now, so it will likely be a while until any more progress is made.

Nice.
You might want the pulleys off for installation.
Did you get longer plug wires to reach that bracket? Is that there since you are using a 2g setup?
Looks really good. Just a few mins every day man it's close.

Nah just got a good deal on it. And it looks nicer imo.

Well, I got anxious. :D

Got the ARP turbo hardware from FFWD Connection, so it's all mocked up for now until my water pipe and oil/coolant lines get here.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Hasn't been much progress lately with all the house shopping, and the baby and everything. I've slowly been plugging away at ripping stuff out of the white car. The harness is a WHORE btw. Have a pile of parts here that I need powdercoated, and picked up some other random items I've needed.

Got a clutch, it's actually the same one from my green car partout! haha hasn't even been used in the 3 years since I sold it. It's a Comp stage 4, 6 puck. Also got some A1 head studs I'll probably use at some point, and ordered a Turbosmart compgate 40 today. Once we get into the house I can start chipping away at some of this shit.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Guess it's been a while. I forgot this little bit.

Figured I'd clean up the crusty old thermostat housing I had before I bolted it on the nice clean engine.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...336259311d5ea3

Little bit of wire wheel action
https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...4e&oe=548D29F2

Going to relocate some of the sensors for a cleaner look and eliminate unneeded holes. I had Camden (Spoolin_Turbo aka Hughes Jr) weld all this stuff up for me. Thanks again Cam!

https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...2bee077ffe72f4

Also had Camden mod the water pipe some since I won't be running coolant to my throttle body, I also decided to keep my heater core in the system because it's honestly simpler/easier just to keep it.

https://fbcdn-sphotos-e-a.akamaihd.n...a441a4fc4aafd6

I had these powder coated, but I must have forgot to take any pictures of the end result. They are semi gloss black just like the old water pipe:

I never did post an pics since I got the wastegate either, so here that is. Carey got me a killer deal on it, fit great on their o2 housing.
https://fbcdn-sphotos-a-a.akamaihd.n...182d6a2fa4cbae

One last piece of the engine portion of the build, sweet replacement baffles I got from a guy on t00ners. Have yet to figure out which valve cover I am going to run yet, but when I do these will be going in it along with 2 5/8" barb fittings for my catch car setup. Camden will be welding all this up for me as well. Not using AN fittings, just keepin it simple and easy to work on! I'll get pictures of all that when the time comes.

Progress is at a snails pace now with a 6 month old, my oldest starting preschool and the sports he's in along with all of the extra stuff I've been doing at work lately.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Picked this up Buschnuts FPR quite a while back, forgot to put it on here. It's going on the stock fuel rail I shaved and had coated with the same black as the other parts.

http://fbcdn-sphotos-h-a.akamaihd.ne...d38c24465c6641

I also got a sweet deal on some 1450's from DSMDolney for when this thing is ready for some e85. I plan on getting it started on stock 450's just for simplicity. I'll send them to FIC to get cleaned and tested before I put them in, some of the seals are dried out anyways and I think they give you new ones and make them look all purdy when you send them in anyways. ;)

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Was going to make an updated post and all the pics are nothing but dead links. wtf.

Anywho, going to do some trans work today with Tachyon, then with any luck I'll be getting the harness situation squared away in the next 2-3 months as well. Once it warms up I'll be putting the engine in the car, then bolt on as many parts as I have and see where I sit. Hoping to have it close to complete by July 4th, all dependent on time and $$$ of course.

That's a bummer bro, was looking forward to reading this whole build thread.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Well, I spent the afternoon at Tachyon's having him attempt to show me about 1g gearboxes. The one I've posted about earlier in the thread was not quite what it was supposed to be, a BM trans with billet shift forks and an LSD insert (had neither) but it still looked absolutely mint so I'm very happy with what I got.

Tachyon's Kitchen!

Gears and synchros looked great!

Here's how clean the inside of it was, Paul figured it must have had very frequent fluid changes - I agree. Even the speedo gear was nice and new looking not all brittle and yellow like another trans we had taken apart had earlier.

That does look minty fresh! Very odd about the BM trans. Is that the one that is supposedly my old one?

According to craigslist/forums/other for sale ads, just about every trans is a 'shep stage 3'. I believe about 5% of them - usually can't prove it with any sort of paperwork, just 'the dude i bought it from said the dude he bought it from said...' Right.

Do you have any more info or details on that? I've never heard of it.

goodhart 02-02-2016 06:05 PM

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Guy on tuners (Steve93Talon) made a run of them a couple years ago. JNZ used to sell a few of his products on their site, but looking now none of it is on there. Now I see they have their own product for the 90 shifters, so my guess is they tried to undercut him and he quit supplying them. Really not sure. I'm just glad to have gotten the little thing before they were all gone. :D

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Finally got a few more parts slapped on. Used FFWD copper embossed gaskets, ARP fasteners. This is officially the budget built gone wrong :scared:

About time though, shit was starting to collect dust as you can see.

https://scontent.ffar1-1.fna.fbcdn.n...7b&oe=57698795

As soon as I get a chance, the chassis will be getting rolled outside to get a quick powerwash. From there, this engine is ready to drop in. I still have a handful of oddball items to acquire, injector seals, throttle body, fuel rail bolts, radiator hoses, etc.

Need to properly torque on my 5th gear nut in the trans, seal that up and then it will be ready to be installed. Need to make sure I have the throw out bearing, jesus clip, fork, etc for that, axles seals too. I have the axles that will be getting used sorted out now. Still looking for the rubber breather pieces for the trans though, if anyone knows where to get those lemme know!

Clutch, flywheel, all that is sorted, so once all the engine is in, the drivetrain stuff should be a breeze. Only part I need to look for is the slave cylinder. Have a few laying around, need to find one that fits. From there it will be almost all wiring harness shit.

We'll see, I would have you make one for me already but for whatever reason the stupid NGK plug wires I got aren't long enough to travel the stock route with the JMF coil relocate bracket. I don't remember if this was a problem before with the green car or not. But with that car I routed them straight over the back and between the injectors.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g

Wow, didn't realized FFWD was still around...they're oooooooooold school.

Great choice on the wheels, amazing how shaving a few lbs of rotational mass off makes such a difference. Lightest of all the OEM Evo 8/9/X wheels, should be a great fit for a DSM. Just make sure you get some lightweight tires to go with them rather than some heavy things that offset any gains.

What are you going to do for brakes?
