daaaaang that is some LIFT! Are you going to need to use valvesprings that require replacement every month?

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

nah, just the ones I have in there. Schneider HD springs. 100lbs seat pressure.

And I looked into my coolant pushing problem today and I think I found the problem.

Here's left to right under the intake manifold:
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC02982.JPG
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC02984.JPG
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC02985.JPG

the head gasket looks delaminated right there, and I'm pretty sure it has to be coming from there since there was coolant all over the lower part of the intake manifold and everywhere on the engine crossmember, motor mount, frame rail, etc.

So, I asked around and my best bet for holding big power is to take the block out, completely strip it down and get it o-ringed.

Diesel technology FTW!! My brother runs 80+ lbs of boost with his truck and it can take it all day long.

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Well, diesel or not, I'm thinking it's the only way to go, and I should have done it when it was in the shop before. Oh well. Winter project.

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

I finally got the engine out after struggling yesterday. I had to use a 1/4" ratchet with an extension through the clutch fork hole to take all the pressure plate bolts out of the flywheel. The motor and tranny wouldn't separate because the pilot bearing was stuck on the input shaft and the clutch splines are smaller than the OD of the bearing. So, got it apart today and took the head off the engine. The head gasket wasn't really blown, but you could clearly see on almost every cylinder where the head was lifting and leaking horsepower. I'm pretty excited for the o-rings now, and the cheap head gaskets I can use!!

You have a sweet car. Wish you luck with it.

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Well you all kind of know where my car was at until a couple days ago. I had a blown passenger side front shock so I bought some Tokico Illumina 5 way adjustable shock inserts for the rear of a second gen MR2. They are shorter than the stock ones by quite a bit and the stock replacement tokico blues that I had were even too short for the housings (see the spacers on the bottom of the blue ones?).
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC03219.JPG

So I cut off the stock spring perch and cut a 62mm section out of the middle of the shock housing, then welded it back together, adding a steel ring around the body to serve as a base for the sleeve coil over.
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC03220.JPG
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC03221.JPG
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC03222.JPG

So the car has a static (almost) 2.5" drop if the springs stayed where they are. It allows the car to be slammed and still have suspension travel, which might be what killed my old shocks. That or the scores from trying to hold the shaft with a pliers (like an idiot).

Anyway, I'll get these on the car tomorrow and see how low it can go. My plans for the car right now are re-do the exhaust so it doesn't sag, install an idle control motor so any dummy can drive it like it was a normal car, install the good torque tube I have for it, tune up the brakes, and for asthetics, get new front tires that match the rears better. Another muffler might be in the works also. So I will take some more pictures when those things happen, but for now the new shocks should be awesome, and the ability to lower the car another 3" from where it's at will require some camber plates and hopefully some roll center adjusters.

Damn, nice!

What's a torque tube? Is that like a 'power band' ?

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

^lol.

When is it going to get more boost?

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Well, good news, it's all in and the car feels great, but even on setting 1 I can tell the car is more bouncy in the rear. As for power, I just got my hands on a sweet HKS super ultra mega hella flow fliter. Should be good for 50hp. After I get an idle control motor, install that tube, or as they say in England, "chube" then redo the exhaust, it will go back for more powa.

Need enough power to bang the rev limiter in 2nd like it does in 1st. I love skating the back end around infront of porsches and other spendy cars. lol.

It's a visible transformation from this :) to this

I've seen it clearly several times. And to be clear, I don't endanger other drivers/cars/peds.

So nice now. I also put on a magnaflow muffler and it's so nice. Good sound and quiet.

Nice work, recirc is great. I like how it connects a little ways down instead of right at the top. How's the car running these days? I haven't seen much of it lately.

No, it's been down for some upgrades. I guess I can tell a bit more, lol.

Awesome! Maybe making an appearance at the fall dyno day? :D I can't wait to see what this thing does now!

I'm receiving a lot of unwanted and unpaid time off, so funds for the dyno day might be tied up elsewhere.

Did running even with a stockish c5 z06 motivate you to slap on more parts? :)

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Well, I had already gotten pretty bored with it. Didn't spin in 2nd unless it was cold, or there was cement, or it was wet out, or if I dropped the clutch, or if I was turning a corner. So, now it should do that. Here's the results from today, with a couple pictures to do the talking.

First:
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC03255.JPG

Then adding a pound:
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC03254.JPG

And as you can see there was a problem, which is shown below:
http://www.mitsustyle.com/photopost/...m/DSC03253.JPG

Also fuel pressure was dropping on that last pull, so the pump is probably done flowing. I had all kinds of little issues like this. The idle control was difficult to get right, and it's pretty nice, but has a little random surge, you should hear the camming though. Not like an evo, but pretty wicked for a quest. The blow off valve has an o-ring on the plunger that broke and was holding it open, so after ripping that out it leaked just a tiny bit, but the next run was more power and more awesome. Then my crappy welds broke and ended the fun, but nothing is mechanically wrong otherwise. Gaining about 15hp per psi, so by that math at 30psi I'd be around 510whp.

Given the clutch's rated capacity of about 545 torque, I'd be pushing it at 500+. Not only that, but the rods, transmission, u-joints, all that stuff. But with the out-of-steam pump, the 1000's that were at 92% and broken CAS drive, more than 450 isn't really in the cards. And holy crap. 450whp. I'm flabbergasted.

asshanson 09-17-2010 01:15 AM

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

That's awesome man. Get that cam/CAS fixed and tear it up! Can't wait to test and compare again.

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

BTW, thank you to ShaneTheMadScientistExtraNoMeat for tuning, V8ViperReid for helping out the whole dang day, ChrisMyBuddy (not on the forum) for helping get my car back home after it got dyno-busted, and InYourSuckerFaceKyle, JDMJohn and MyNameMeansBusinessSwifty ;) for helping push the car.

No thanks to JimTalonFiero! All he did today was bust my chops and tell me to quit making torque, lmao! j/k, Thanks Jim for all your reverse psychology support.

Thank you! I will do that, and yeah, testing and comparing... in Mexico. :D

If I can somehow get it fixed tomorrow I might head down to porky's but I'm not in a huge rush. I'd kindof like to drive the car, but what's a couple days to get something done right? (Why didn't I take that advice last winter and buy nice rods? lol)

rofl. I thought you were dangerous enough at the lower power level. ;)

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Nah, it's a fuzzy household pet, no beast. lol. I was just thinking though, if it kept gaining power like it was, it would take 37psi to make 600. But something tells me that won't happen, lol.

TalonFiero 09-17-2010 08:21 AM

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Glad it broke exactly how you thought it did. Simple fix and you'll be on your path to 500hp I would think.

With all that torque you should enter competitions like this:

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

If I can get my cam fixed today I'll be out there tonight tearing it up. I can only hope, lol. No welding shops that are listed publicly want to do it or are even open fridays. My only hope lies in friends with tig welders. I know approximately two. lol.

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Fuck congrats man. Don't break it just yet wait until the snow flies.
That's a lot of power I want to see this bad boy even more.

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Getting cam fixed tonight, so it'll be good to go in a few hours. Also a member on starquestclub offered to trade fuel pumps, he said he has a "bosche 1000." Which V8ViperReid and I can only imagine to be an 044. So, if that's what it is, I'll trade pumps with dude and see what's up. lol.

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

I want another ride but not like the same circumstances as last time. :D

scheides 09-17-2010 04:56 PM

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Badass numbers man! Don't you have billet rods in this thing? How come you're afraid to push it to 30? I say do it to it! Then again, I'll take a reliable 450whp over a broken 500whp car any day.

What fuel pump do you have in it right now? Walbro? BAP and push those 1000's to 101% baby!

*edit* eleven, I mean push them to eleven.

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

Negative on the aftermarket rods. The guy has an 044 to trade so I'm gonna do that quick and go back for maxing some 1000's haha.

FattyBoomBatty 09-18-2010 10:16 AM

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

And not that this actually happened, but last night I imagined going up against this stang that was on spray and went 11.40 or something. He got the v8 torque jump and pulled about three or four cars on me before I finally had a tall enough gear. But the gap started closing fast and I passed him banging the rev limiter in 4th.

Sometimes my imagination can run wild I guess.

Swifty1638 09-18-2010 10:18 AM

Well I got the intercooler pipes recut and rewelded to fit the new intake manifold. Got a mustang 5.0 throttle body that needs an idle valve and TPS, and John's old 1680cc injectors. Very excite.

^x2 on the very excite, i heart this car.

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

http://www.starquestclub.com/forum/u...777_739555.jpg

I can imagine reading this thread is hard because it seems like parts are missing. They are. After getting the 433 tune, the clutch began to slip, so instead of getting a new clutch like I should have, I took the advice of the guy at spec and cleaned my slipping clutch and put it back in. And even at 22psi, it was slipping, so that was a bad idea and lots of labor for crappy results.

I have ignored that lately and gone with the new intake mani you see up above, and a new fuel system. I made a sump in my stock tank and will be installing the fuel pump under the rear bumper for all you slower cars to see. The picture above is "upside down" but you get the idea. It's a whole lot of billet aluminum back there, and it's going to be loud, haha. But it supported 650awhp at DB, so I know it'll be more than I need for the time being...

Don't they usually see the passenger door?

What's the new plan for the clutch?

FattyBoomBatty 11-05-2010 06:09 PM

Re: Turning my quest into a dsm.

You burned me good! lol.

Plan fo' the clutch is to just get their upgraded pressure plate and possibly a new disc, but the plate is supposedly good for 100 more lbs of torque than the current one I have.

I'll need it too. Trying for 50-100 more hp than the previous max. I don't know why though, since 430 was super fun.
