Re: Evo X upgrades

Hrm you're starting to make me wonder if I shouldn't try this on my car. I have no idea what fuel pressure is though...if it is super high that would make sense why my fuel system is dropping off up top.

mlomker 05-28-2011 01:32 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

Definitely recommend a fuel pressure gauge--so useful and a simple inline one is like $30. If your pressure is always too high then you will burn up the pump. There are guys that have gone through 3-4 Walbros before this issue was solved.

You would not believe how small the hole is in the return for the suction line. Holy shit! It is literally a pinhole. How the hell even the stock return fuel got through that is beyond me. Here it is AFTER I drilled it out to 5/64ths.

http://i959.photobucket.com/albums/a...ay/pinhole.jpg

What the part looks like. You need to give it a really good tug to get it out of the hanger.

Re: Evo X upgrades

Okay...I spent the last few hours going up one drill bit size at a time and the results were pretty predictable.

5/64ths: ~2psi
Port filter holder: ~2psi
Remove filter: ~1psi
3/32nds: ~2psi
7/64ths: ~2psi
1/8th: ~2psi

I'm now at the proper pressure at idle. I'm not going to worry about the filter since I have an inline under the hood. 1/8ths happens to be diameter of the top side of the tube so the solution was to just drill it out.

I'll have to see if the suction is still working but seeing how I went one bit a time, I think it will.

Installed the Weldon 2015 and controller today. That thing is so badass...

Car up and running now? Dumb question is that a wash bottle in the trunk? if so is that where they are from the factory?

Kracka 05-30-2011 07:49 PM

Re: Evo X upgrades

Yup, washer fluid and the battery are in the trunk from the factory. Normally they're hidden with plastic paneling, but this trunk is stripped.

Re: Evo X upgrades

Had the car running Friday morning...took me a few days to figure out my issues with the switch back to a stock in-tank setup. Today I installed the Weldon and it appears happy.

It'll obviously need a re-tune after all of this. Next thing is to get on Shane's schedule...

Looking good! Are you hoping to get tuned before MAP's event?

Just use your standalone logging setup to log fuel trims for now and if shane can't fit you in maybe I could trade you some street tuning time (should be pretty basic, you have a wideband right?) in exchange for letting me try out that aeromotive/jay's 255 drop-in? :) Should be pretty simple as it'd just be dialing in AFRs.

If his schedule permits otherwise I'll ask scheides for some help! I basically just need to make sure that the fueling is conservative with the new setup.

Not sure how accurate the PLX gauge is since I have more oil blow-by than most folks. I would love to wire that gauge into my ECU sometime this Summer, if you have the time to give me a hand.

Re: Evo X upgrades

Awesome! I'm on Shane's schedule.

I have a mild fear that the Weldon 2015 won't be big enough but that's only because the X is so bizarre about its pump needs. This pump is rated for 1000bhp so it should be good into the 500s@DB on E85.

I lowered the flow using the dial-a-flow controller before driving to work this morning. It looks like I was out-flowing the capacity of the 1/4" return line a little bit since fuel pressure dropped 2-3psi. It's sitting right at 43 now, which is a good spot for it. Just need the fueling adjusted to match.

mlomker 06-08-2011 06:17 AM

Re: Evo X upgrades

Torqued that oil feed banjo bolt and it tightened 1/4 turn. It'd be nice if that were the issue.

I changed the oil and left the under-tray off for Friday's visit with Shane. I can't tell if the Hobbs switch is kicking the pump into high gear or not. The car gets so loud during a pull that I'm not going to hear the pump change speed. I've done a couple half-pulls to 15psi and the AFRs look good @11.2-11.3.

Re: Evo X upgrades

That's good! Hopefully it stays that way. Does the Weldon controller operate a dual voltage setup then?

Not quite, it's an interesting device. It uses some sort of pulse modulation to limit the current but it always operates at the same voltage. You use a pot to adjust the amount of current sent to the pump at idle and then you send voltage to a terminal to trip it into full current. They say it is a 0.5v drop vs alternator voltage at 20amps.

It feels like Xmas Eve to me. I want this car done so bad.

I actually have as many spectator events planned for this season as driving. ChumpCar fascinates me. I'd love to join a team next year.

Re: Evo X upgrades

The Weldon worked perfectly from the first pull. The fuel tested as E81.

I was a bit surprised by the number for my 30psi tune. We dialed in my normal 25psi tune at 440whp.

I'll scan the sheets after work.

Dam those are some very nice number for a motor with low compression. Your car has an awesome power band. Hope I can get a ride in it sometime.

Mark Leasure was there to get his IX tuned after me. He was saying that he prefers lower compression and turning up the boost. I'll just drive it if the compression numbers remain where they are (115-ish).

Re: Evo X upgrades

Drive it until it smokes enough to bother you, then rebuild. No need until then. Mark is right, it's what I suggest, and I know Shane has said similar in the past as well.

Congrats bud! Glad to see this turbo fully unleashed. I spoke with Shane, sounded like you are still blowing some smoke? Is that from the turbo seals still do you think?

Regardless, great stuff. I must have literally just missed you. I got there when Mark did his baseline tune and shot the shit with him while his car was tuned. Was hoping to see yours in action.

Nope, the motor has 115 compression. Most Evos are like 155.

It only blows smoke after a pull. I imagine it might burn a quart during a track day but compared to the fuel burned, the oil seems like nbd.

I had him not get too wild with the psi. The stock X turbo can spike into the 30's but what I've been told is that it impacts torque and not hp since the boost tapers badly beyond 5500. I just didn't see the point in abusing the stock clutch like that.

I threw on a set of Icebears this afternoon for the winter fun.

On 12/12 I'm installing the rear anti-swaybar and a TWM short-shift kit. After that is the KW V3 coilovers and a Whiteline roll center kit install. A BBK, gauges, RE30's/NT05's, and some carbon aero is planned for the Spring. I intend to have this car complete by the next Mitsu cookout!
