Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
The head is warped out of spec, so I'm just going to have him deck it, ream the head bolt holes out to 1/2" for the 6 bolts studs and tap and plug the egr. I'll probably have him check the valve guides too just because.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Ahh, too bad this isn't a few weeks from now! I could do all of that for nearly nothing.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Well, FWIW Cylinder Head express is like blocks from where I live and I'm planning on bringing it to Gosh.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
I was only going off of the threads title.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
ha, yea. For the motor stuff I am willing to pay a few extra bucks.
Actually, after talking to Cylinder Head express, I may just bring my head there, he used to do Brent Rau's heads for his 2g. :D So he does quality work, and I don't have to drive 40 some miles to get it done. Money saved there! |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Very nice goodhart, excited to see this bish done.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Got a few parts yesterday, good deals on it all.
Have this now for when I do the swap: https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...75926454_n.jpg This thing came off MAP's FDSM, and its like new. Got a killer deal on it. This can replace that stupid aluminum underdrive pulley. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...14682741_n.jpg Also got a JMF coil pack relocate and a mint upper timing cover. https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...50755404_n.jpg https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...99970057_n.jpg |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
I see them.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Fixed them

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Got some more parts so I can finish this damn shortblock finally.
I also got the wrong rear main seal and front case gasket with my master rebuild kit, they gave me 7 bolt parts for those 2 items so I got the rear main from RockAuto for $5 and the rest is OEM. I added a OFH and water pump gasket in there just to be on the safe side. I didn't want anything else holding me up. Should be everything I need! https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...78864201_n.jpg |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Small update here, ended up getting another wrong front case gasket from JNZ, before they sent me another correct one free of charge. So I got the front case on the engine, OFH, pulleys, oil pan, etc. Then I realized I forgot to torque on the oil pump sprocket with the front case off the car, and now with the oil pan on, I have no way to get to it to hold it still. So I'm guessing I'll have to wait until I get the head installed and the timing belt on until I am able to torque it down now.
Anyways, now I have the motor at home and just need to get it onto the stand so I can get to the top end portion of the build. Plugged the egr from the head yesterday: https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...34503306_n.jpg Used a 1/4 npt plug: https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...55269899_n.jpg Now I can bring it in to Cylinder Head Express to get it re-surfaced, hot tanked, have the guides checked, lap the valves and anything else needed to get this thing on the block and in the car. |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Well, I brought the head in yesterday and here is what I found out: The head is warped all the way through, it will need to sit in the oven to pull it straight again. He also showed me where someone had done a partial valve job (only 2 of them) where the seats were cut, new valves were put in and then the butts were ground all uneven to make them work.
Basically, someone did some shitty work to this head and it will be more cost efficient to just get a new core rather than try to fix all the fuckups in this one. So the plan is to find another 2g head, re-do the oil port mod, and egr plug, and drop it off. |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
I have a 1g head.....
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Nope. I already have all the shit for a 2g head.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Well, I've found a waaay cleaner shell to continue this project in. Once I get the new shell, this thing will be up for sale for cheap/parted.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
If you still need a 2g head I have one gosh just did.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
o rly?
How much? |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Well, I blew the head money on a cleaner shell than my rust bucket. Well worth the money! Picked this up from 4g63tcrazy, it was insanely clean when he had it, so hopefully I can return it to it's former glory. It's still real low mileage (79k) and he took real great care of it, so it'll be a perfect car to start with instead of the white pos. Plus he gave me a ton of parts with it, so thats a big bonus! I'll have to make a fs thread soon, I have lots of stuff to sell now.
Looks like I'll need a cf hood to replace this white thing. Anyone want some 2g wheels with good tires on them? https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...29016867_n.jpg Wanted to test fit my fmic and it popped right on in about 10 seconds. https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...12210064_n.jpg Still super clean under the hood, lots of dust from sitting for ~2 years, but still great looking. I'll either need a wiring harness, or get the one from the white n/t car to work. Then I'll have to do my own tuck work to make it work with the fuse box relocation https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...11911171_n.jpg |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Mods the shell came with:
Shaved/tucked engine bay (w/ fuse box relocated to stock SMIC location) Hypercoil AWD lowering springs on stock struts 2g AWD dual piston front brakes Rewired Walbro 255hp fuel pump |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Ahh, I can see all the firewall holes are welded up. That's one of my winter projects as well.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
dat shell!!!
I'm sad he got rid of it, I was hoping he would be making a comeback sometime soon |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
He's got a stock red 2g now and still has that white 1g awd that got passed around a bit after Bryan Rabe got it from some dude in Carolina off NABR. The 1g has all the old parts from this thing in it.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Looks good! Sorry I wasn't able to help out
Those 2g wheels have some fuzion tires or something? |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Oh yeah, I forgot about that shell.
Well congrats to you! |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Curious, pm me about wheels?
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
They do brad! Still good tread too! They are off your 2g aren't they?
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Nice shell.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Small update. Picked up a few things for it last week. 2g head, has a couple casting flaws I think, I'll have to see what the machine shop thinks, it's straight as an arrow, comes out flat to .002" so It's a great candidate.
Also got some Evo VIII valve springs and retainers from an NTEC guy down by Kracka. And a perrin air filter from EvoTuna |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
This thing gonna roll this spring?
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
idk, engine is making slow process, the harness is not. I'll either need a turbo engine harness or use my unhacked n/t one and add a knock sensor and resistor pack. Then mod it so it works with the relocated fuse box. Going to be a lot of work.

Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Update 1/20/14:
Shell came with a socketed Eprom. I found a chip with a stock tune minus fuel cut on it I got from SleepyDSM like 2 years ago. Popped that in there. https://fbcdn-sphotos-b-a.akamaihd.n...45740897_n.jpg Brought in my head to a guy my brother knows, he gave me a killer deal for some good work. Did the oil port mod before I brought it in. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...72665112_n.jpg Picked up some Evo 8 valve springs. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...54506521_n.jpg Back from the machine shop, bling bling! https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...70232598_n.jpg He even cleaned up the runners for me without even asking for no charge. https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...98371530_n.jpg Put in my 3g lifters https://fbcdn-sphotos-f-a.akamaihd.n...12626951_n.jpg Put in my new valve seals I got from JNZ on sale back in October https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...29227855_n.jpg Putting the valvetrain together https://scontent-a-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...41971817_n.jpg https://fbcdn-sphotos-g-a.akamaihd.n...71549633_n.jpg Whoops, hand tools was too slow, electric impact was dead and the air tools were too much! https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...32850486_n.jpg Installed my new fp hardware as well https://scontent-b-ord.xx.fbcdn.net/...98229779_n.jpg Budget for the complete head including, machine work and parts: $195 Total for complete fresh goodhart stage 0 longblock from valve cover to oil pan including gaskets: $617 :D |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Wow, hell of a steal on the build! Hope to see this thing running soon.
I love that FP stud kit, I had some threads nearly stripped and those things held awesome WAY better than the hardware store stuff I used for a couple years. |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Yeah goodhart its looking good. maybe with some luck it'll be on the spring cruise!

I am actually contemplating foregoing doing Evo stuff this spring and instead of using my bonus from work on that doing a lot of house stuff that I have been holding off on doing. Car stuff is awesome, but house stuff is awesome too. |
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
Yea, there's a good chance this thing will get put on the back burner for a few months until we find/move in one. We are starting our search in March and hope to have one by the end of May.
|
Re: Goodhart's budget beater 1g
I'm glad that I took a year off, but to be fair I wanted a house.
