Re: Project S14 240sx

Well the diff and the wing showed up. The diff looks almost brand new, gonna be installing that next week. I tried to install the wing, but it didn't come anywhere close to fitting correctly. It was way too wide, the bolt holes weren't patterned right, and the profile didn't fit the deck lid, so the mounting points were about a half inch off the surface of the deck lid. That's gonna be getting shipped back.

Also, I was driving around on Tuesday night, and the car started pulling to the right, so I looked at the wheels and the right front had probably 3* of positive camber. When the previous owner installed the coilovers, he used bolts that were way too small so he could run way too much negative camber up front. They came loose, and the wheel was able to tip in and out depending on which way the wheels were turned. The bolts are supposed to be m14, and the bolts he used were 7/16". So I went to the hardware store and got some bolts that are the correct size. No more crazy camber problems in the front!

I also got the new heater box installed. It's so nice to have heat again!

Re: Project S14 240sx

I got big brakes! Calipers are off of a 300zx, 4 piston aluminum. They only weigh a little over 6 pounds each. The rotors are for a 350z track package. 12.75". I decided to go with Hawk HPS pads. Also got some stainless lines for the front. The rears are 2 piston aluminum calipers, but I can't put those on till I get the e-brake assembly and cables from a 300zx since the stock 240 e-brake uses the caliper, and the 300zx uses a top hat style.

Lookin' good! Why no SS lines for the rear?

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-16-2010 02:56 PM

Re: Project S14 240sx

Those will come when I get around to putting the rear 300zx calipers on.

Re: Project S14 240sx

Cool. Are those Technafit lines?

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-16-2010 02:59 PM

Re: Project S14 240sx

No, they're project Silvia lines. The 300zx calipers use a different fitting than the 240 calipers, so they need to be custom made. Luckily there's plenty of demand for this swap, so the lines are easy to get.

Kracka 03-16-2010 03:03 PM

Re: Project S14 240sx

Oh ok that's cool. I know Technafit will do one-off custom lines too if you ever need them.

They look nice.

Re: Project S14 240sx

Think you'll paint the calipers or just install them as-is?

Was going to ask this too.

Looking good though! Should be a beast in no time!

Re: Project S14 240sx

I was thinking about painting them orange, then scraping it off the Nissan letters so that they're silver again.

rose0529 03-16-2010 07:02 PM

Re: Project S14 240sx

That sounds cool! Should polish the nissan after scraping off the paint that'd look sweet.

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-16-2010 07:10 PM

Re: Project S14 240sx

Yeah, right now the letters have a kinda machined finish, but I think I might polish them.

Re: Project S14 240sx

very cool brake system. My friend owns a 96 240 and I drove it around the block...those 300zx calipers w/ stainless steel lines come to a quick stop pretty easily. Definitely love how the 240sx feels compared to my car. Every think about painting the calipers........Takata Green?! lol.

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-16-2010 07:41 PM

Re: Project S14 240sx

Haha no Takata green. I'm thinking I'll go with an orange theme with this car. Maybe get the valve cover powder coated, I've seen harness bars for pretty cheap, Maybe a few other things here and there.

Re: Project S14 240sx

I got the differential swapped out yesterday/today. What should have been a 2 or 3 hour job turned into a 2 day job. This should bring a new meaning to a welded diff...

http://i250.photobucket.com/albums/g...t/P1010505.jpg

Whoever did this must have not wanted to ever take the diff apart. The axles were welded into the side gears, as well as the spider gears. I ended up getting some carbide sawzall blades and cut the axle out of the diff so that I could re-use the housing. Used a chop saw to cut the axle out of the other side, then ground enough of it off to get the ring gear/diff out of the carrier housing. After much cleaning and new output shaft seals, everything went back together smoothly. On to more pics!

Re: Project S14 240sx

that was such a pain in the ass to do. the honda kid messed a ton of thing up on the car.

we also raised the back of the car 1.5in. it looks a lot better now. it has alot less neg camber now and is at a good hight

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-18-2010 11:44 PM

Re: Project S14 240sx

Oh yeah, forgot about the suspension raising. The car feels like it rides a little better now too. And it's nice to not have the tires rubbing the 1/4 panels around hard corners.

Re: Project S14 240sx

Wow. I'm at a loss of words about that differential....

Awesome job getting that thing out though, damn. :|

Re: Project S14 240sx

LOL @ your welded diff...They weren't kidding when they said they welded it. That's horrible. Looking good so far! Can't wait to see the exhaust!

goodhart 03-19-2010 08:47 AM

Re: Project S14 240sx

Looks like they just popped the cap off the diff and started welding away...New diff looks good, I bet it will drive much better now. Any pics of the exhaust installed?

Lets go find the previous owner and take turns kicking him in the balls!

Wow is all that residue on the inside, metal shavings? Thats horrible.

 I'm glad this car went to a good owner. It's a gorgeous car and it definitely is getting a makeover for the better!

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-19-2010 10:58 AM

Re: Project S14 240sx

The residue inside was because I had already spent an hour cutting the axle out with the sawzall before I took the pics, so it was all the metal dust from the carbide blades. That stuff was a bitch to get cleaned out, but it's good as new now! It's soooo much nicer to be able to go around a tight corner now without the car clunking, surging, and skipping the inside tire, and to be able to pull into a parking spot smoothly and quietly.

I didn't get a chance to take any pics of the exhaust installed, the car needs a wash badly before I take any new pics of it. I'll probably get them early next week.

Kevin, you need to post this on MNSC. That is absolutely unbelievable.

^word, give all the other asshats an idea of what welding the diff is. lol

That made me puke, really my stomach hurts now.

I am also a loss for words on this one. It worked...but
FAIL!

I am glad to see that this car is coming back from being a POS to a nice restored Nissan that will probably drive better and perform better then any of these stupid mods that were done to the car.

I am glad you had the patience to hack that out of the car. I would have tried to find another rear end...

+1 on posting this on MNSC just to show what not to do..

Wow I can't believe my eyes, that is crazy shit. Take it on some twisties with the new LSD yet then? It must feel a lot better!

Re: Project S14 240sx

Did you drive in figure 8's yet?

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-19-2010 11:30 PM

Re: Project S14 240sx

It's a helical LSD, no need for figure 8's ;) As far as driving the car on twisties, I've only driven it from Mark's house to home, then to work and back today. I got on it going around a couple tight 90* corners, and the rear end still steps out nicely, and feels more planted than with the welded diff since the helical LSD transfers more torque to the wheel with more grip.

I thought about just finding a whole different rear end, but the only one I knew of at the time that was available was way up in East Bethel at u-pull it, and that would have been out of a '91. I figured it was easier to just cut this one out than go lay in a puddle of mud trying to pull the one up there.

Haha I'm gonna clean it up and put it on the wall of shame

123abc 03-20-2010 06:54 AM

Re: Project S14 240sx

Wasn't there some sort of bad vibrations at speed? There's just so much wrong with welding it like that....haha

Kevin 1G Drummer 03-20-2010 10:48 AM

Re: Project S14 240sx

Surprisingly enough, it didn't vibrate or make noise or anything at speed. I couldn't believe my eyes when I popped the cover off...
